The latest Skype beta by Microsoft comes with Windows 10 Mobile support

Microsoft’s latest Skype beta for Windows 10 comes with support for the mobile version of the OS as well. Users can try out the new version of the popular messenger if they are running a preview build of Windows 10 Mobile.

The new Skype beta for Windows 10 Mobile aims to become the default messaging solution. Just like Apple iMessage and Google Hangouts, the application can handle sending SMS or Skype chats seamlessly.

Skype calling on the other hand, becomes part of the phone app in Windows 10 Mobile. Skype Video, as its name suggests, will handle video chats.

The new beta is available only for Insider users for the time being. Microsoft is yet to announce its official availability.

Oppo R7 Plus goes up for pre-order in the United States, doesn’t come cheap

Oppo’s R7 Plus phablet is now available for pre-order in the United States directly from the company’s online store. The handset is priced at $499, though interested parties can order one with 10% by using an email promo code.

The device is available in gold color scheme and will come with free Bluetooth headset. Pre-orders are expected to begin shipping by the end of this month.

Oppo R7 Plus features 6″ 1080p display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 chipset, 3GB of RAM, 13MP camera, 8MP front-facing unit, fingerprint sensor, and massive 4,100 mAh battery. The phablet boots ColorOS 2.1 based on Android 5.1 Lollipop and does not support US LTE bands.

Even with 10% at launch, we find the US pricing of the R7 Plus overly ambitious due to its mostly mid-range specs. Such budget can currently land you a Moto X Style, LG G4, and Nexus 6 among others, so you must really want an R7 Plus in order to splurge for it.

Best Apps and Games of the Week

These are some of the best apps and games that came out this week.

Android Wear

iOS finally gets Android Wear support with the release of the Android Wear app on the Play Store. The app works with any iOS device running iOS 8.2 and above, although it is naturally optimized to work with iPhones. The app will allow you to pair any Android Wear smartwatch with your iPhone over Bluetooth. The app will then push all phone notifications to the watch as well as show Google Now cards. There is no support for apps at the moment but the app does allow you to download and install select watch faces. If you’re looking for full-fledged Android Wear experience, you won’t find it here but considering it is working with a different platform altogether the Android Wear experience with iOS is pretty decent and usable as long as you just need to see your notifications on your wrist.

Google Street View

Google’s new Street View app lets you drop down to various locations around the world and watch 360 degree panoramas shot by the Google Street View car or by people shooting 3D panoramas from their phone. The app shows you various locations that you can click on and view immediately. If your device supports a gyroscope you can just move the device around to look around instead of swiping around on the screen. You can also shoot 3D panoramas from the app and upload to your Google account, which could then be visible to other people. You can also connect to a dedicated 360 degree camera, such as the Ricoh Theta S to capture better 360 degree panoramas.

There are also over 1400 emoji to choose from along with emoji suggestion as you type and stickers. You can also choose from multiple themes for the keyboard.

The company that invented the mobile phone – a glimpse at Motorola’s history

For mobile phone enthusiasts, the name Motorola usually brings back the images of some of the most stylish flip phones ever made. However, the company surely has much more to be proud about. With many iconic gadgets to its name, Motorola has been at the forefront of technological inventions and innovations for well over half a century now.

In this article, we take a look at the company’s history as well as some important milestones it achieved on its journey to where it is today.

The Beginning: battery eliminators and car radios

It all began in the decade of 1920 when Paul Galvin from Illinois went to Chicago in search of work. After working for a local storage-battery company there and a couple of failed attempts to start his own businesses, he along with is brother Joe Galvin established Galvin Manufacturing Corporation in the year 1928.

The company, which had $565 in working capital and just five employees, focused on making battery eliminators – a device that enabled battery-powered radios to work with household electricity instead.

Like almost all the other companies, Galvin Manufacturing was also severely affected by the Great Depression that hit the USA in 1929. In an effort to pull the company out of red, Galvin began experimenting with the auto mobile-radio market, asking his employees to design an inexpensive car radio that could be installed in vehicles of any make.

The following year, the company was able to produce a working model, which carried the brand name Motorola. The name was derived from the words “motorcar” and “victrola.”

In 1930s, Galvin Manufacturing came up with devices like police radio (a car radio that received only police broadcasts) and home radio with push-button tuning features – a first of its kind.

Towards the end of the decade, the company started researching on television. However, the research work was halted for a couple of years in favor of war-related projects that produced products like the Handie-Talkie SCR536 portable two-way radio, as well as the Walkie-Talkie, both of which were by used the U.S. Army Signal Corps in WWII.

R&D Work on television resumed in the year 1945, and the company unveiled its first TV in the year 1947. Dubbed Golden View, the $179 TV became hugely popular, with the company selling over 100,000 sets within a year of its launch, and becoming the number four TV manufacturer in the US.

The year 1947 turned out to be an important year in the company’s history as it also saw Galvin’s son Robert joining the company, as well as the company being renamed Motorola, Inc.

Towards the end of the decade, in an attempt to expand its automotive business, Motorola also tried developing car heaters, but the project failed after its engineers couldn’t solve some technical issues like those related to proper exhaustion of the gasoline fumes.

Home Entertainment

Like in the case of Sony, the invention of transistor created a new business opportunity for Motorola, which quickly formed a semiconductor development group that churned out products like three-amp power transistors. It also started supplying transistors to other companies, including some of its competitors.

The 1950s was also the decade when the demand for home entertainment equipment like televisions took off in the US. Citing opportunity in home entertainment market, Motorola focused on creating stereo phonographs, the first of which were introduced in the year 1958.

The step proved to be successful with sales surpassing the prior year’s sales of all phonographs and hi-fi equipment. This was followed by development of units that were a combination of stereos, radios and television sets. These products turned out to be so popular that the brand name ‘Motorola’ became synonymous with ‘entertainment in the air.’

1958 was also the year when the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) came into existence, and Motorola became one of the agency’s first suppliers, providing space communication equipment like transponders that were used in Mariner II, which launched in 1962 to explore the planet Venus.

The famous Apollo 11 mission saw hundreds of Motorola engineers designing, testing, and producing the space flight’s sophisticated electronics. After becoming the first human to land on moon, Neil Armstrong said his first words -…

ZTE Axon Pro battery life test

ZTE Axon Pro turned out one of the season’s surprises – it offers great build quality, interesting design, top-notch chipset and hi-fi audio playback, plus you get a free JBL premium headset with each Axon Pro.

The Snapdragon SoC isn’t popular with its battery performance, but we were still hoping the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop would manage to do fine with its latest optimizations.

Indeed the Axon Pro did very well on the 3G talk time scoring almost 21 and a half hours.

The top 10 trending phones of week 36

Last week was dominated by IFA 2015 and the effects of the trade show were far-reaching. But it is not only the news and reviews section that are swapped with new device announcements, the top ten chart felt the effect as well.

Undoubtedly Sony takes the cake this year in terms of device announcements. After Samsung’s decision to push the Note5 unvailing before IFA, the new Xperia Z5 lineup definitely got a chance to shine and boy did it do so. The Sony fan base has always been quite active on the website, so it comes as no surprise that this week first place goes to the Xperia Z5 Premium, followed by the Z5.

The prospect of a record-breaking 4K display inside a mobile was definitely enough to give the Premium and edge and quite a substantial one with almost twice the hits of the Z5. This is a clear sign that the new Xperia handsets will probably stick around in the top ten for at least the next couple of weeks if not more. That may also include the smaller Z5 Compact, which isn’t enjoying nearly as much attention, but still managed to swoop into the race out of nowhere like its sibling and take the last place.

As for the rest of the top 10 chart, things looks mostly unchanged from last week, with all the usual entries still present, only bumped down a couple of spots by the aforementioned Z5 offers. We find the Note5 at third place, followed by the Moto G (3rd gen). The Galaxy J7 and J5 seem to have swamped places yet again, but they are still pretty close apart. Then we have some more Samsung phones – the Galaxy Grand prime, the A8 and the S6 flagship.

It appears the new arrangement has left no room for the Asus Zenfone 2, the Lenovo K3 Note or the iPhone 6, so a lot less variety on the chart this week.

Samsung Galaxy S6 edge+ battery life test

Now that the fuss after the IFA announcements is finally settling down we got some time to share the Samsung Galaxy S6 edge+ full battery life test breakdown. Our review was quickly topped by the IFA articles, so in case you’ve missed it, you may want to check it out.

The Galaxy S6 and S6 edge outed very respectable battery life scores, so we were very curious how the bigger S6 edge+ will do. And it turned out stellar.

The Galaxy S6 edge+ packs a bigger 5.7″ Quad HD Super AMOLED display and runs on the same Exynos 7420 monster chipset the Galaxy S6 duo introduces earlier this year. Its battery is 15% bigger at 3,000 mAh battery, which should make up for the bigger screen to light up.

Our first battery test gauges the 3G talk time performance and the Galaxy S6 edge+ aced it with a score beyond the 30 hours mark.

IFA 2015 smartwatch comparison

As expected, wearables were a strong presence at IFA. We’ve gathered the highlights (even if some of them were unveiled earlier or not quite a IFA) and distilled their specifications into tabular form for easy comparison.

The Motorola Moto 360 was one of the most hotly anticipated smartwatches and while it still uses a “flat-tire” display, Motorola improved a number of features, including adding a second size option. That’s quite popular – all but the Huawei Watch and Samsung Gear S2 come in two sizes. The Huawei Watch itself was one of the more desirable watches… months ago when it was first announced, Huawei really dragged its feet with this one and the fire somewhat died down.

Samsung has been dropping hints about a round smartwatch with a rotating bezel and it’s one of the most attractive smartwatches to date. We only wish it had a bigger version, going from a 2″ screen on the Gear S to a 1.2″ screen on the Gear S2 is quite a hit. Then there’s the Asus ZenWatch 2, which is the only new watch from IFA with a rectangular screen. It packs a lot of bang for the buck though.

Anyway, here’s the table. We’ve highlighted above average features in green and below average features in red.

For a more in-depth look, we have hands-on writeups for each watch.

OnePlus 2 battery life test

OnePlus 2, flagship killer or not, turned out one very interesting high-end smartphone with massive interest online. OnePlus indeed succeeded into hyping the fans and it seems the company delivered for the most part.

Whether the choice of Snapdragon 810 was the right one, or not, is a question with no simple answer. The performance is more than adequate and overheating issues are not possible, as the chip has been tweaked. But what about the battery life then? Let’s find out.

The day we published our review our OnePlus 2 received an OTA update, which improved on the stability and hopefully the battery performance. We updated our unit and did the tests again. The OnePlus 2 outed similar results on the media, web and call tests, but performance a notch better when left on standby.

First things first though. The OnePlus 2 is an A student when it comes to 3G talks. The phone lasted north of 30 hours, when hooked on a 3G call, which is nothing short of impressive.
