Week 37 in review: iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, Sony, Nexus and HTC rumors

Apples, Apples everywhere – phones, tablets, TV boxes and even a pencil. Cupertino took the news section by storm with its event, just as expected. The new iPhones are here – iPhone 6s and 6s Plus and as usual they are the best iPhones Apple has ever created.

We have already extensively covered almost every detail about the pair and you can read up on all the specifics in the linked articles below, but here are the most-important highlights: 12MP OIS camera with 4K recording, 3D touch display, all new A9 chipset and 2GB of RAM.

The other exciting announcement was undoubtedly the iPad Pro – a 12.9-inch monster of a tablet that has been frequenting the rumor mill since January 2014. It is no longer a work of fiction and now official, with major promises for unparalleled productivity. Underneath its impressive 2732 x 2048 pixels display is an A9X chip, paired with what Adobe has confirmed to be 4GB of RAM. For even greater productivity and precision there are also the new Apple Pencil – a high-precision active stylus and a convenient Smart Keyboard to go along with the iPad Pro.

In other non-Apple related news – the rumored Nokia C1 Android phone is gathering quite a lot of attention and so is the rumor of an upcoming Xperia Z5 Ultra with a beastly Snapdragon 820 chipset. And Speaking of the Z5 family, its star pupil – the Z5 Premium underwent a thorough examination under our digital microscope. The next Nexus phone also made headlines with a new leaked render and even a possible pre-order date for both the LG and Nexus models, set for October 13. Last, but not least – the HTC One A9 flagship also generated interest with talk of an impressive MediaTek ten core CPU.

The new Apple TV gets unboxed ahead of launch

The new Apple TV isn’t shipping to customers till late October, but YouTuber Andru Edwards was able to get his hands on one for a quick unboxing.

The box doesn’t contain anything we don’t already know. There is the new Apple TV with the Siri Remote. The remote, as you may know, will have Siri only in select countries, and in other countries the Apple TV will instead ship with a standard Apple TV Remote, which is otherwise identical to the Siri Remote except instead of Siri you only get standard search functionality.

Other than that there is a power cable, Lightning to USB cable to charge the remote, and documentation.

The new Apple TV still has roughly the same dimensions as the previous one except for the increased height. It also has a new USB Type-C connector on the back for servicing although Apple does not provide a cable. The HDMI has been updated to 1.4 standard to support 1080p60 video along with 7.1 channel surround sound. The Ethernet, however, is still 10/100BASE-T, so no gigabit support.

The new Apple TV is priced at $149 for the 32GB and $199 for the…

GoPro and Galaxy Note 2 recovered 2.5 years after stratospheric journey

A journey to the stratosphere and back, meant to last short of two hours, is now complete more than two years later. The travelers – a GoPro camera, a Samsung Galaxy Note II and a Sony camcorder have just been retrieved after spending about 27 months lying on the desert floor in the Grand Canyon.

The devices were installed in a custom-designed 3D-printed enclosure and tied to a weather balloon. Launched into space in June 2013, the trio took part in a flight to the stratosphere, shooting some unique images on the way.

The journey itself lasted only an hour and 38 minutes, and the Note II was supposed to report its GPS coordinates via SMS upon landing, so that the crew could go and pick up their gear. Unfortunately, the devices landed in an area without cellular coverage, contrary to what AT&T’s maps indicated during the planning of the event, and the tech along with the footage was thus bound for oblivion.

In a fairy tale turn of events, the gear was discovered just recently by a woman hiking in the area, a woman who happens to work at AT&T. Talk about irony.

You can watch the highlights of the trip in the video below.

Oppo R7s certified by TENAA, a 5.5-inch one this time

Oppo is apparently not content with the diversity of its R7 range and a new entrant is on the way. In all fairness, it’s a pretty wide gap between the 6-inch Oppo R7 Plus and the 5-inch R7, while the R7 Lite was never meant to address that particular issue, instead focusing on affordability.

The Oppo R7s is now coming along, as Chinese telecom regulator TENAA will attest, though the name may not be final. The new model with a 5.5-inch FullHD AMOLED display sits smack in the middle between the the R7 Plus and R7 in terms of display diagonal.

As these listings never name the chipset specifically, we’re left to speculate that the octa-core 1.5GHz CPU is part of a Snapdragon 615 chip – after all, the rest of the R7 bunch is equipped with it. RAM is 3GB again (only the R7 Lite has 2GB), and internal storage is 32GB, expandable as usual. A 13MP/8MP camera combo is on board, and the R7s runs on the latest Android 5.1.1 Lollipop.

Oppo R7s at TENAA

Nothing all that impressive so far, but a careful look at the specsheet reveals a hefty 200g weight. That’s 8g more than the 6-inch R7 Plus with its 4,100mAh battery, so could the R7s have a monstrous battery like its bigger brother? Unfortunately, it’s one of the details sadly missing from the regulator’s entry.

Weight isn’t one of the fields where we’ve witnessed TENAA get its facts wrong (like camera resolution), but the 151.8 x 75.4 x 6.7mm dimensions, specifically the thickness, suggest that may be the case this time. The thing is though, there are two versions of the device with different radios, receiving certification, and both supposedly weigh 200g.

We’ll need to wait for an official announcement to shed more light on the matter, but the voice of reason whispers that it’s nothing more than an error. The Oppo R7s, however, with its 5.5-inch display is very much real.

Meizu PRO 5 paves the way for a new sub-brand, launch scheduled for September 25

In a bid to differentiate its true flagship from its almost-as-good-but-not-quite-there MX5, Meizu is mixing things up in terms of naming and the new top-end model will be called simply PRO 5. Compare that to the previous generation, where one was called MX4, and the other MX4 Pro.

In a way, it’s actually a move to a new sub-brand, with multiple models to come. Meizu’s logo is only discreetly stamped on the side of the retail package of the pioneering PRO 5, photos of which have been circulating online these past couple of days.

Meizu PRO 5 retail packaging

The PRO 5 will come in two versions, powered by either an Exynos 7420 chip, or Mediatek’s much-hyped Helio X20 that boasts the first deca-core CPU, both reportedly benchmarked earlier. Meizu’s VP has explicitly stated that we won’t be seeing a Snapdragon 810 SoC inside a PRO 5, with some pretty harsh words on the chipset being uttered to justify the decision.

By now it’s also been confirmed that the smartphones will come with a 1080p display, likely with a 5.5-inch diagonal. Previous reports outlined different specs for the Exynos and Mediatek versions, but something along the lines of 3GB/4GB of RAM, 32GB of storage and a 21MP primary camera, is to be expected.

Speculations will end on September 25, when the first PRO model will be unveiled, according to Meizu’s official schedule. A price around the CNY 3,000 ($470) ballpark has been rumored.

Google Maps shows global warming effect on Los Angeles coastline

There are those who stubbornly refuse to acknowledge that global warming is a thing, and will perhaps continue to do so until ocean water arrives at their doorstep. That’s what Google has tried to recreate, though still on a virtual scale, by showing the effect of the phenomenon on the Los Angeles coastline.

Now, it doesn’t seem likely that Google thinks that non-believers are concentrated in that part of the world. Odds are that it can generate more publicity and awareness than an obscure uninhabited coast in Chile (a big fan of Chile, don’t get the wrong impression).

This new “feature” of Google Maps seems to only affect the L.A. coast for now, and you may not be able to check it out for yourself everywhere in the world. We certainly tried, and couldn’t replicate it from our headquarters, so it’s likely a region-limited thing.

Huawei Honor 4C Plus to be launched next week

Huawei is all set to launch an upgraded version of its Honor 4C smartphone, which was released back in April this year. Dubbed Honor 4C Plus, the device will have 16GB of internal memory, which is double than what the Honor 4C has.

There is currently no word on whether or not the Honor 4C Plus will come with any other changes. So, assuming that the rest of the specs remain same as that of the Honor 4C, it will be powered by a Kirin 620 SoC with octa-core 1.2 GHz CPU, and sport a 5.0 inch display with 720 x 1280 pixels resolution.

The handset will come with 2GB RAM, and pack in a 2550 mAh battery. In terms of camera, it will feature a 13MP rear unit and an 8MP front shooter. The Honor 4C Plus will run Android KitKat-based Emotion UI, although the Lollipop-based variant is also a possibility.

The handset’s price will be revealed on September 14, and it will go on sale the following day i.e. on September…

Alcatel OneTouch Watch makes its way to India

Many, many months after it was announced at CES, the Alcatel OneTouch Watch is now official for the Indian market too. It will be exclusively sold by Flipkart, priced at INR 7,999 (that’s $120 or €106). Interestingly, the pricing is more aggressive in India than in the US, where the recommended value is $149.99. That’s not a situation we see often in the mobile world.

The Alcatel OneTouch Watch doesn’t run Android Wear as you might expect. Instead it’s powered by a different solution developed by Alcatel for it. It does however work with both Android smartphones as well as iPhones, through dedicated apps.

The smartwatch has a 1.22-inch 240×240 touchscreen with oleophobic coating, it’s powered by the STM429 chipset, and it’s got a 210 mAh battery. Also in tow is Bluetooth 4.0 support, and it has an IP67 rating for water and dust resistance.

Sensor-wise you get an accelerometer, an altimeter, a gyro, an e-compass, as well as a heart rate monitor. It’s compatible with devices running Android 4.3 or newer and iOS 7 or later. It’s 10.5mm thick, and the watch face has a diameter of 41.8mm.

You’ll be able to buy the Alcatel OneTouch Watch in either “sporty dark red” or “volcano black and…
