Russian Probe finds Google guilty of abusing its dominant market position

Just seven months after Russia initiated an antitrust probe into Google, the company has been found guilty of “abusing its dominant market position,” according to a report from the Wall Street Journal.

The probe was initiated after a complaint was received alleging the Mountain View, California-based company of following anti-competitive practices, especially related to the way it bundles apps with Android.

The complaint was made by Russia’s biggest Internet company Yandex – which controls over 50% of the country’s online search market – after several device manufacturers complained that they were no longer able to pre-install the company’s services like maps and search apps on Android.

When asked to comment, a Google spokesperson said, “We haven’t yet received the ruling,” adding that “when we do, we will study it and determine our next…

Verizon’s original Moto X finally receives Android 5.1 update

The original Moto X from 2013 has been updated to Android 5.1 Lollipop in June. In July even AT&T’s version of the smartphone got the update. However, Verizon’s model is only now about to receive the new software.

The carrier nicknamed Big Red has finally approved the update for the Moto X, which means the new bits are now headed to the devices so far stuck on Android 4.4. The fact that Motorola decided to skip the Android 5.0 Lollipop release for the original Moto X will make this an even bigger deal for people who bought the handset from Verizon. Hence, the changelog is pretty big. If you’re interested in going through it all, make sure you hit the Source link below.

As usual with these things, allow a few days for the update to reach you if it hasn’t already, since such rollouts are staged. After applying it, you’ll be on software version 222.21.39.

Sony rolls out Android 5.1.1 for the Xperia Z1, Z1 Compact, and Z Ultra

Sony is now rolling out the update to Android 5.1.1 Lollipop for three of its smartphones – the Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1 Compact, and Xperia Z Ultra. This follows a similar rollout which made its way to the Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, and Xperia Tablet Z last week.

The devices getting it this time around are basically successors of sorts to that particular series. They’re also quite old, which makes the fact that Sony is still supporting them even now an interesting fact.

For all three handsets, after applying the update you will be on build number 14.6.A.0.368. Currently the new software is live in only a few regions, but it’s expected to spread across the world in the coming days and weeks.

The update fixes the famous Stagefright vulnerability, adds additional options for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth in the notification menu, has new themes and Settings icons, integrates LinkedIn with your Calendar and Contacts, and improves camera focus, speed, and accuracy.

Additionally, you get improvements to volume and silent mode control, new Xperia for Business features, instant calendar events (shareable from email), calendar agenda in Email, and you can use the Sony SmartWatch 3 as a remote shutter button for your…

Huawei Nexus gets benchmarked with Snapdragon 810, 3GB of RAM

We’re now just over two weeks away from Google’s rumored September 29 event during which the two new Nexus phones are supposed to become official. As such, leaks about both the LG Nexus 5X and the Huawei Nexus are starting to show up left and right.

Today the Huawei Nexus has been spotted in a benchmark’s database. The fact that someone has put a prototype through the paces of Geekbench thankfully reveals a few key specs.

The Huawei Nexus sports the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 chipset, as do a lot of other high-end handsets this year. Google’s next phablet is graced with 3GB of RAM, and it runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow as you’d expect. The new version of the mobile OS is going to debut alongside the two new Nexus smartphones.

Other specs haven’t surfaced this time around, but past rumors talked about the Huawei Nexus having either a 5.5″ or a 5.7″ screen, with either 1080p or QHD resolution. It should also get a USB Type-C port, and a fingerprint scanner.

LG announces October 1 event, might unveil the dual-screen V10

Microsoft isn’t the only company sending out media invites today. It’s been joined by LG, which is going to hold an event in New York City on October 1. As you can see from the invite itself (which is pictured to the left), there’s going to be some kind of movie theme to the gathering.

There are no additional clues, but for a few months now we’ve been waiting for LG’s second flagship smartphone of 2015 to become official. And this could just be when it’s going to see the light of day for the first time.

The handset in question may have already been spotted at TENAA, China’s equivalent of the FCC. If so, then it will be called V10, and it will be a slightly bigger sibling for the already announced G4.

The V10 has a 5.7-inch QHD touchscreen, a 16 MP rear camera with dual-LED flash and laser autofocus, a 5 MP selfie cam, 3GB of RAM, 64GB of expandable storage, and a fingerprint scanner built into the power key (which is located on the back of the phone in the trademark LG style).

The V10 is powered by the same chipset as the smaller G4 – Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 808. A unique feature of the upcoming device is a secondary ticker-style screen which is located directly above the main…

Microsoft Lumia 950, 950 XL, Surface Pro 4 to be outed on October 6

Today Microsoft has started sending out media invites for an event it’s holding on October 6 in New York City. The invite itself only says that we’re going to see new Windows 10 devices, as you can gather from the image below.

However, past leaks have talked about the Microsoft Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL high-end flagship duo becoming official at an October event, and now we know when that will take place.

Alongside the two highly-anticipated top of the line phones, Microsoft is apparently also going to unveil the Surface Pro 4 tablet and a new Band wearable.

In the past rumors have talked about a bigger Surface tablet perhaps seeing the light of day this year. This could come with a 14-inch touchscreen, but it’s unclear whether it’s going to be ready for the October event.

The Surface Pro 4 should keep the form factor and charging mechanism of its predecessor, while packing some other upgrades. It’s likely to be thinner and lighter than the Surface Pro 3 and it might come with a fingerprint sensor too.

The Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL had official-looking press renders leaked last month. They are going to both sport QHD resolution screens, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of expandable storage, a 20 MP PureView rear camera, a 5 MP selfie snapper, and a USB Type-C port for charging. The 950 XL shall come with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 chipset and a 3,300 mAh battery, while its smaller sibling will pack the Snapdragon 808 and a 3,000 mAh…

Meizu PRO 5 outpaces the Samsung Galaxy S7 in GeekBench

Today’s turning into a Geekbench shootout and the Meizu Niux appears to be superior to the Samsung Project Lucky. Or as they are otherwise known, the Meizu PRO 5, due to launch on September 25, and a possible Galaxy S7, which is likely still a good 6 months away.

The Meizu PRO 5 will supposedly come in two versions with different chipsets, and the one just spotted on GeekBench is the Exynos 7420 variant. Interestingly enough, it scores close to the 5600 mark in the multi-core test, while Samsung’s own Galaxy S6/S6 edge are in the 5200 ballpark, and the the Note5/S6 edge+ a smidgen behind.

So not only does the Pro 5 outperform Samsung’s upcoming Exynos 8890 (admittedly early in its development), but also posts higher numbers than the current Korean flagships with silicon identical to theirs.

It’s a very flawed comparison though, so you can’t really draw any meaningful conclusions. The Niux may very well be a pre-production unit, the Lucky has been spotted in a different configuration, and the rest of the 7420 crew are final, commercially available devices. So we’ll be patiently waiting for a Meizu PRO 5 to come our way for review, before we crown it the next performance king.

Apple confident iPhone 6s duo will beat 10M sales record

The new iPhones 6s and 6s Plus are selling like crazy even before they are officially available. This hardly comes as a surprise, but a new company statement offers a little perspective as to how well preorders are actually going and states that at this rate last-year’s records will be broken.

To put that in numbers, Cupertino is anticipating that it will exceed the 10 million opening week sales that it reeled in with the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. Apparently, interest for the preorder campaign this year was overwhelming with stocks already sold worldwide.

Customer response to iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus has been extremely positive and preorders this weekend were very strong around the world, . , any said in a statement. “We are on pace to beat last year’s 10 million unit first-weekend record when the new iPhones go on sale September 25.

Apple hasn’t given any exact preorder statistics yet, but last year over 4 million iPhones were sold in the first 24 hours of the preorder. Only one thing is clear, all the stocks that the OEM put up are now depleted and considering this year the initial rollout includes China as well, it is more than likely that first week sales will be record-breaking yet again.

The only other piece of info we have states that apparently customers showed more interest to the Plus model this year, with supplies going faster. We should get a clearer picture of how successful the preorder session actually was as the September 25 availability date nears.

Building even further on these predictions of whopping success, analysts from BTIG Research claim that Apple can actually sell 80 million phones by the end of the year alone. The number was around 74 million for the same period last year and considering the above information that definitely sounds plausible. Furthermore, market analysis shows that 70% of current iPhone owners are still using units from 2013 or older and that the addition of 3D Touch technology will be a major upgrade incentive for a lot of them.

Apple’s new iPhone Upgrade Program, probably launched in anticipation of the elevated interest, might contribute to overall sales success as well. Another interesting prediction that could be made is that Cupertino might hold off as long as it can on supplying third-party retailers and carriers in particular with large quantities of the iPhone 6s duo in an effort to try and hook users to its own subscription service.

Judging by past experience, Apple will likely shine some light on initial sales around September 28, so we will be sure to revisit the matter…

Award-winning photographer takes Galaxy S6 edge+ camera for a spin

Award-winning fine art photographer Peter Lik took the Samsung Galaxy S6 edge+ for a photographic tour of the US. He then showed off the shots at the launch event in Shanghai, China, and is preparing another exhibit of landscape photographs taken during his travels in China.

“I always want to push the boundaries of photography, both personally and with the best technology. That is why I use the Galaxy S6 edge+ as my phone camera,” said Peter Lik.

He has been rising in popularity since 2014 when his shot titled “Phantom” sold for $6.5 million, the most expensive photograph ever. He has tallied up over $500 million with his photography.

Here are some of the photos he showcased in Shanghai, the ones taken in the US. They are low-res copies, you’ll probably have to mortgage your house to get a bigger…
