Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P names confirmed by leaked retail boxes

Leaked images of retail boxes confirmed that the upcoming duo of Nexus smartphones by LG and Huawei will indeed be named 5X and 6P respectively. Google will take the wraps off the two handsets at an event in San Francisco next week, on September 29.

As you can see in the images above, the retail package of the Nexus 5X sports a large letter X, dressed in a Material Design wallpaper. The 6P on the other hand, features the letter P with similar styling.

Rumored specs of the Nexus 6P include Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 chipset, 3GB of RAM, up to 128GB of built-in memory, and 5.7″ QHD display. The LG Nexus 5X on the other hand, features Snapdragon 808 SoC and 5.2″ 1080p display. Both devices will pack fingerprint sensors….

Apple’s next-gen A10 chipset rumored to have hexa-core CPU

This year’s iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus sport Apple’s all-new A9 chipset, which brings with it improved performance compared to its predecessors. The A9’s barely become official and we’re already hearing the first rumor regarding its successor. According to a source in China, the Apple A10 for 2016 devices will be quite special.

That’s because the Cupertino company is said to be seriously focusing on multithreading for the first time since it’s started designing mobile chipsets. This newfound focus may result in the A10 SoC having a hexa-core (6-core) CPU.

Up until this point, Apple went up to three cores maximum. This is why its chips benchmark poorly in multi-core runs compared to the Android competition. The A10 will be manufactured on either a 14nm or a 10nm process. The manufacturing partner for it could be Samsung, but TSMC and Intel haven’t been ruled out either.

The source of the information is apparently the same person who accurately described the Apple A9 chipset before it was official, so all of this could pan out. Then again, we’re pretty early in the development phase of the A10, so even if these details are true now, things may change in the future.

HTC to out One A9 in October, Butterfly 3 and updated One M9+ this month

HTC has scheduled an event for September 29, which is next week. At this gathering it’s so far been assumed that two devices would make their debut: the Butterfly 3 and the One A9. However, according to some new information from a couple of leakers of all things HTC, that may only be partially correct.

The Butterfly 3 will reportedly be announced on that occasion, but the One A9 will not be at the event. Instead, HTC will reveal an updated One M9+ model. Unfortunately we’re left guessing as to what all the improvements in this new One M9+ variation will be compared to the original. That said, the camera should be enhanced, with OIS and faster focusing, if we go by one previous leak.

The Butterfly 3 will apparently only be launched on the Chinese market. While it’s been rumored to be based on this year’s J Butterfly for Japan, it’s still unclear which J Butterfly we’re talking about – the one announced in May or the one from July.

Moving on, the much-leaked One A9, at one time thought to be HTC’s next flagship device, is said to become official in October at a major multi-city event in the US. After that, expect to see a big marketing campaign (at least big for HTC) accompany the handset’s launch.

Obviously you should take all of this with a grain of salt, but if the One A9 is a high-end flagship it would make sense for HTC to hold a more global event for it – and one dedicated to just this smartphone.

On the other hand, past leaks had the One A9 coming with Qualcomm’s recently announced Snapdragon 617 SoC, which is part of the chip maker’s mid-range line. The One A9 could also sport a 5-inch 1080p touchscreen, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of expandable storage, a 13 MP rear camera with OIS, a 4 MP UltraPixel selfie shooter, and a 2,150 mAh battery. The handset will have a fingerprint sensor, and it might run Android 6.0 Marshmallow. As for pricing, it probably won’t be cheap.

Samsung announces incredibly fast 950 Pro SSD

Samsung has introduced a new SSD today. It’s called 950 Pro, and it’s insanely fast. The drive is the first one to bring vertical NAND technology to the consumer space. It’s a Non-Volatile Memory Express M.2 SSD, in the M.2 2280 size.

It will be offered in two capacities – 256GB for $199.99 and 512GB for $349.99. Thanks to its support for the PCIe Gen.3 x4 interface, it delivers speeds that SATA-using drives can only dream of.

The 512GB Samsung 950 Pro reaches sequential read speeds of 2.5GB/s and sequential writes of 1.5GB/s. In terms of random access, it delivers 300,000 read IOPS and 110,000 write IOPS.

The drive uses Samsung’s second generation MLC V-NAND 32-layer 128Gb die with UBX controller and magician software. It has AES 256-bit Full Disk Encryption and something called Dynamic Thermal Guard, which apparently protects the device and data when it’s exposed to temperatures ranging from 0 to 70 degrees Celsius.

The 950 Pro can withstand shocks of up to 1500G/0.5ms and 20G vibrations. Warranty-wise you’re looking at five years of coverage for both capacities, with the 256GB model getting that up to 200 terabytes written, and the 512GB unit up to 400 terabytes written. The drive will be in stores in…

Dual-screen LG V10 is shown in another leaked image

LG is working on an Android smartphone with two displays – and they’re both on the front. This device, known as the V10, was caught at Chinese regulatory agency TENAA a while back, and it might become official at an LG event that’s taking place on October 1.

In the meantime, though, we’re treated to a new leaked image showing the LG V10, which you can see on the left. And this time around the small secondary screen is clearly visible above the main display.

In this render it’s filled with five app shortcuts, but perhaps it will have some other uses too – we can imagine LG might allow it to also show a few contacts, for example, in a similar fashion to the Edge display on Samsung’s Galaxy S6 edge and Galaxy S6 edge+.

The secondary screen reminds us of Verizon’s Samsung Continuum from 2010, which featured a 1.8-inch 480×96 AMOLED touchscreen underneath the main display. To put it lightly, the Continuum never reached bestseller status, so it’s unclear if LG’s attempt at a similar product will be more successful.

According to the aforementioned TENAA listing, the LG V10 will have a 5.7-inch QHD main touchscreen, a 16 MP rear camera with dual-LED flash and laser autofocus, a 5 MP selfie cam, 3GB of RAM, 64GB of expandable storage, a fingerprint scanner built into the power key, and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 808 chipset at the…

Gmail for Android gets Block Sender and Unsubscribe options

Today Google is announcing the latest update to Gmail for Android. The app gains two new features, both of which should help your Inbox be less cluttered by useless communications.

First up, there’s “Block Sender”. In any message, hit the options menu and choose this if you don’t want to see any more emails from that particular address. After you pick this option, all future emails from that address will go straight into your Spam folder, thus never bothering you again. This is available today in Gmail on the Web and will roll out to the Android app “in the next week”.

Unsubscribe is already out on the Web, but Google is saying it will make its way to Android as well. Just like its name implies, this feature lets you easily opt out of certain mailing lists directly from the app. You just tap on the options menu and choose Unsubscribe when you’re viewing such a newsletter.
