Football and surfing events broadcast for Samsung Gear VR in Portugal

VR headsets are typically discussed in the context of first person games, but Samsung sees another highly popular opportunity for the head-mounted display tech – sports.

The company has already delivered a VR sporting experience to fans in Portugal, who virtually spectated a football game between rivals FC Porto and SL Benfica. Five 360° cameras were used to broadcast the event: one behind each goal, one behind each team’s bench and one in the stand.

You can see some excerpts from the game in the video below and look around with your mouse, but it just doesn’t look the same without a VR headset.

From the pitch to the sea, Samsung Gear VR users also got to experience the Moche Rip Curl Cup remotely. The IRL event took place on October 24 at Supertubos Beach, but views from the beach, the VIP area and the athlete’s lounge were transmitted thousands of miles away.

Do you see a future where huge 50+ inch TVs get replaced with compact VR headsets for watching sporting events? You’ll lose the social experience, but if alone you get to pick your own vantage…

Huawei Mate 8 goes trough China’s 3C certification authority

If there is one handset that everyone is currently looking forward to, it definitely has to be the Huawei Mate 8. The eagerly-anticipated flagship was confirmed to sport the Kirin 950 chipset and now it appears to have edged yet another step closer to going official.

Last we heard the Mate 8 should be unveiled on November 26, and now we have some more evidence to back up the claim of fast approaching release. The China’s 3C Quality Certification authority has a listing for three variants of the Mate 8 – NXT-AL10, NXT-CL00 and NXT-TL00. These will, most likely, be the three main China carrier versions – for China Unicom, China Telecom and China Mobile, although not necessarily in that order.

The certification page seems to hold little other useful information, but it does give away a hint, regarding the phone’s power management. All three models are said to support fast charging at 5V/2A and even at 9V/2A. That adds up to 18W of juicing power and hints at a large battery inside the unit, possible in the excess of 4,000 mAh.

As per previous leaks, other specs on the Mate 8 should feature a 6.0 inch 1440p display, although Huawei has spoken against the battery-draining QHD resolution in the past, so 1080p is also an option. It should come with 3GB/4GB RAM and 32GB/64GB internal memory options. In terms of camera, the Mate 8 is expected to feature a 13MP rear unit and an 8MP front shooter, and its SIM card tray is said to support two SIM cards and a microSD card.

The high-end device is said to carry a CNY 3,299 ($520) price tag for the 3GB RAM variant and CNY 3,899 ($610) for the 4GB…

HTC One M9 pattern lock is very easy to bypass

HTC One M9 owners beware – the pattern lock on your phone is very, very easy to bypass, even on the latest version. The trick is dead simple:

1) Use the Quick toggles on the lock screen to toggle Wi-Fi (on or off, doesn’t matter)
2) Done

Did you expect more steps? Well, there aren’t any. For whatever reason the HTC One M9 just skips over the pattern lock when the state of the Wi-Fi changes. When it disconnects, it unlocks the screen. When it connects to a network, it unlocks the screen.

If you have an M9, please try this method and report in the comments whether it works (including the ROM…

Mlais smartwatch: classic look and dedicated smartwearable chipset

If you love the design of the Huawei Watch, but your wallet firmly objects, then you can check out this, let’s say, tribute to the design. The Mlais smartwatch will cost $123 when it becomes available on Gear Best.

It features a 316L stainless steel case and genuine leather band (metal straps are available as well). The screen is a 1.3″ TFT with 360 x 360px resolution (276ppi), there’s no word on the glass. The case is water resistant to an unspecified rating.

M’smartwatch

The Mlais smartwatch is powered by MediaTek’s wearable chipset, the MT2601, with a dual-core processor, 512MB RAM and 4GB storage. The watch runs Android 5.1 – presumably that’s the base for Android Wear instead of full-blown Android.

The battery is pleasingly big at 400mAh (promising 2-days standby) and you get a heart rate monitor. Wi-Fi is available, but no GPS.

CEO confirms Tag Heuer’s first smartwatch will cost $15,000; launching in the US today

While we already know that Tag Heuer’s first smartwatch will be unveiled in the US today, CEO Jean-Claude Biver has confirmed that the high-end wearable device, dubbed Carrera Connected, will carry a $15,000 price tag and not the 18,000 tag reported earlier.

While he said the smartwatch will have functionality similar to the Apple Watch, he stressed that they are not competing with the Cupertino-based company as Carrera Connected is an exclusive, luxury watch targeted at a more high-end clientele. “We are not Apple. We are a watch brand. I forbid my colleagues to say Apple is our competitor,” he said.

Like most smartwatches, the titanium Carrera Connected will also wirelessly connect with your mobile phone to offer a range of features. Although Biver didn’t provide much detail on the watch’s functionality, he did say that it can do much more than just counting your steps or taking your pulse, and the appearance of its face is also modifiable.

The smartwatch, which is developed in association with Google and Intel, will be available in-stores in New York at noon (1700 GMT) today – nearly 1,000 units will be on offer. It will land in Europe three days…

Nexus 6P owners reporting shattered glass on the front and back

The Nexus 6P’s build quality came under scrutiny recently after a bend test video that showed the phone bending like Twizzlers. But that was the metal. Turns out, the glass isn’t particularly strong either. In fact, it pretty much shatters on its own without much intervention.

A handful of reddit users are reporting that the glass on the back of their brand new Nexus 6P shattered pretty much on its own while the phone was sitting on its back, without them doing anything. This brings back memories of the Nexus 4 back shattering in a similar way, the reason back then being the glass was unable to handle the sudden temperature change when kept on a cool counter during winters after being used for a while.

It seems the glass on the Nexus 6P might be going through a similar situation. It’s likely the metal around the glass or the glass itself is expanding in a way the manufacturer didn’t foresee, causing the glass to shatter in its place with nothing to absorb the expansion.

But that’s the back. Couple of users have also reported their display glass cracking with one long crack going across the surface (if you remember, this is exactly what happened in the first bend test video).

For what it’s worth, Google has been providing support for these devices and in cases where it can’t has been directing towards Huawei, who is also handling the servicing. It’s unfortunate, though, that this is happening at all. For now, it’s only a small group of people reporting the issue, but considering the phone only recently went on sale, not a lot of people have it in the first…
