Alphabet, la empresa matriz de Google, busca dar autonomía a dos proyectos, uno de drones para la entrega de productos y otro de globos aerostáticos para la conectividad en internet, para convertirlos en empresas independientes, anunció el grupo este miércoles.
El proyecto Loon planea colocar globos aerostáticos en la atmósfera para mejorar las conexiones a internet en áreas remotas, mientras que Wing se centra en el uso de drones para la entrega de mercancías.
Ambos forman parte de la moonshot factory, o proyecto X, creado en 2010 por Google.

Estos dos proyectos se convertirán en empresas independientes dentro de Alphabet y posteriormente, si tienen éxito o necesitan financiación adicional, podrán separarse por completo del resto de las actividades del gigante de internet.
"El objetivo de X es crear nuevas tecnologías revolucionarias y convertir las ideas en conceptos viables", señaló Astro Teller, gerente de proyectos de Alphabet, en un blog.
"Ahora que la tecnología central para estos proyectos existe, Loon y Wing están listos para ofrecer al mundo sus productos", agregó.
Wing estará bajo la responsabilidad de James Ryan y Loon de Alastair Westgarth.
Alphabet adoptó el mismo enfoque en el pasado con Waymo en el área de vehículos autónomos, Chronicle en ciberseguridad y Verily en ciencias de la vida. Dandelion, de energía geotérmica, se ha convertido en una empresa completamente independiente.

Otro gigante de internet, Facebook, anunció a fines de junio que ponía fin a su programa de desarrollo de drones capaces de proporcionar acceso a internet a aquellas partes del planeta que aún no lo tienen, pero que continuaría trabajando en este sector con socios industriales como el fabricante de aviones Airbus.
