Jeb says he wants turtles in vanilla, as well as birds.
He said he's going to add turtles but doesn't know what they'd drop yet, and mentioned that birds should be in the game already. This was all in his interview at Minecon.

Reminder: The updates are going to be smaller from now on
A lot of people expected a bunch of new biomes and structres in 1.11, but I think we should be thankful about how big it was compared to 1.10.
With these smaller but faster updates, we got new content more often instead of having to wait 2 years for another update. And it helps modders since the code doesn't change too much.
