Hot Technology Pilots in 2016 – Fear & Chaos in Technology Adoption

Last March I talked about technology pilots and discussed a survey we launched regarding technology adoption. I asked if we were going to invest in IOT, VR/AR, biometrics, analytics and wearables and other technologies or if there was just a lot of hype about “emerging” and “disruptive” technologies. The data we collected was across multiple industries and countries, but primarily from the US. There were nearly as many business professionals as technology professionals who responded to the survey. The Cutter Consortium facilitated the data collection process. (Thanks to everyone that helped us discover a lot of counter-intuitive insights!  A special thanks to Tom Cox and Kaung Khin for their help with the research:  they are my de facto co-authors here.)

New York VC Thrive Captial Raises $700 Million For Fifth Fund

Thrive Capital, a New York-based venture fund which has backed companies like Warby Parker, Instagram, Twitch and has launched a few of its own (Oscar, Cadre, Maple), has closed $700 million for its fifth fund. The raise nearly doubles the $400 million Thrive collected for its last fund in 2014. Reps for Thrive say the fund’s investment team (Joshua Kushner, Miles Grimshaw, Chris Paik, Jared Weinstein, and Kareem Zaki) will focus the new capital on early stage companies. Thrive will also make occasional bets on later-stage growth investments—previous growth plays have included Stripe, Github, and Slack.
