After TiVo: Will The Over-The-Air DVR Die?

I remember the very first moment I had in my hand the peanut-shaped controller that ran my TiVo DVR. It was magical. After a lifetime of TV programming me, setting my schedule, forcing me to make time to watch my favorite shows when they were broadcast – TiVo set me free. I was in control, I watched what I wanted when I wanted it. But alas, my fifteen-year odyssey with user-controlled media is coming to a close. So, who will provide an Over The Air video recording device as the next chapter of media now unfolding?

Why We Revised Our Price Estimate For VMware To $74

We recently revised our price estimate for VMware from $86 to $74. The primary reasons for the price estimate revision were lower revenue expectations, particularly for software licenses, which will negatively impact the company’s margins and earnings going forward. In its fourth quarter and full year earnings call in January, VMware’s management provided weak revenue guidance for 2016. Moreover, the announcement of the Dell-EMC deal resulted in VMware’s stock plummeting by over 25% at the time. With Dell acquiring EMC, it has effectively taken the 97% voting rights of VMware but floated over 50% of VMware’s stock as tracking stock with no voting rights. VMware’s shareholders have been unhappy with the conditions of the deal since then.

Is Google Finally Catching Up On Live Streaming?

Reports suggest that Alphabet Inc.’s subsidiary Google is developing a live-streaming app called YouTube Connect, which will provide live streaming capabilities to most of its users. Currently YouTube offers this capability via its app called Creator Studio, for users who have a verified channel of good standing on YouTube. Google’s competitor Facebook recently announced that it is extending its live video streaming capability “Facebook Live”, which was launched in August last year to all Apple iOS and Android users in the U.S. Another popular live streaming app, Twitter’s Periscope, has genertaed over 100 million live broadcasts from users since its launch last year. Twitter recently integrated the live broadcasts directly into Tweets. While Google has not confirmed news reports of YouTube Connect, we believe investing in live video streaming capability on a large scale via a mobile app will be essential for YouTube to maintain its competitive edge.
