HTC USA slashes the One A9 price by $100, get it only today for $399

HTC One A9 – the company’s premium metal-clad mid-ranger – is now at a discounted price. HTC USA is selling the One A9 for $399 instead of the regular $499.

All One A9 models are available at the lower price – you can choose between the unlocked flavor, AT&T, T-Mobile, or Sprint. The paintjob options you can choose from are Carbon Gray, Opal Silver, Deep garnet, and Topaz Gold.

The $100 discount is valid only for today, and it’s applied once you add the One A9 to your shopping basket.

We May Be On The Verge of Forecasting Tornadoes Weeks In Advance

Spring is particularly conducive for tornadoes in many parts of the United States. At the time of writing, survey teams were investigating possible tornado damage in parts of Texas. Tornadoes remain one of the most elusive and fascinating phenomena in meteorology. They can literally change the lives of families and entire cities. It is why I have a healthy dose of respect and fear of them. I don’t cheer for them. Scientists understand the general conditions that are conducive to the formation of tornadoes, but the lead time for warning for a specific tornado is still under 15 minutes. However, potentially breakthrough research published in the American Meteorological Society’s Monthly Weather Review by a team led by Dr. Victor Gensini of the College of Dupage offers the promise of forecasting tornadoes 2 to 3 weeks in advance. Sort of.  Dr. Gensini has forecasted above normal tornado activity in the United States through the first 3 weeks of March. How is this possible and what are the caveats? I decided to ask Dr. Gensini who happens to be a former doctoral student in our program at the University of Georgia (I was on his PhD committee). Here is my exclusive interview with him:

Sony’s Optical Archive Could Kill Tape Data Archiving

Tape had always been the preferred medium for datacenter archive, even though it could be difficult to deal with and was a medium that (because it literally touched the recording head) degraded every time you recorded or read the tape. Plenty of enterprise information is archived on tape, but that is about to change. We all know that information is growing exponentially and now archiving is struggling to keep up. With the expectation of 44 zettabytes of data being created by 2020 and archive data being the fastest part of this growth, tape vendors should be in a great position. But, tape leaders like Oracle and IBM might have more to fear from this huge increase in data than they have to gain. And it may come from the most unlikely place of all: optical. We recently looked at Sony Optical Archive Inc. and how their entrance into enterprise archiving could give tape–and hard drives for that matter–a real run for the money. Fukushima Nuclear Disaster 5 Years On: The Ice Wall Cometh (Part II)

I left off in Part I with TEPCO metaphorically treading water at the crippled Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. It continues to inject cooling water into the three damaged reactors and then deals with the contaminated drainage that mixes with incoming groundwater by partly cleansing it of most contaminants and storing it in huge steel tanks.
