AT&T’s acquisition of satellite TV operator DirecTV last summer enabled it to compete in the over-the-top (OTT) video market by offering DirecTV’s programming over its telco and mobile Internet services.  AT&T’s announcement yesterday begins to clarify what it intends to do in this volatile market. Although the announcements are short on details, it’s clear that AT&T understands what’s wrong with current directions in branded OTT services and how it could beat its competitors in that market.

Last October, citing savings of up to 90%, GE’s technology team announced plans to eliminate 29 of its 34 private data centers, by shifting their workloads to the public cloud via Amazon Web Services. Because of this “tipping point” at GE and elsewhere, Amazon.com reported that AWS’s revenue growth accelerated to 70% on average in 2015, setting it up to crack the $10 billion mark in 2016. Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon, has stated for some time that he believes AWS revenues could surpass those of its retail business, a tall order given the $100 billion that the latter delivered last year. What he had not been telegraphing, until Amazon broke Infrastructure-as-a-Service out in its income statement during the second quarter, is that AWS, with a 24% operating margin, is already nine-times more profitable than its retail business.

Leading medical device manufacturer Medtronic reported its Q3 fiscal 2016 earnings on March 1st. (Fiscal years end with April.) The company posted revenue growth of 6% driven by incremental revenues from Covidien acquisition and a strong growth across each of Medtronic’s business divisions. Further, Medtronic saw growth coming in from the market expansion due to new product launches. Although Medtronic’s non-GAAP EPS stood at $1.06 in Q3, foreign currency headwinds continued to offset Medtronic’s growth across its businesses, affecting the company’s revenues by a significant degree in Q3. Nevertheless, it was a strong quarter for Medtronic and we expect the momentum to continue going ahead.

Motorola Solutions’ revenue can grow 3% over the next five years driven by new contract wins, a rise in recurring revenues from existing contracts and recurring revenues from Airwave solutions. However, EBITDA may fall slightly due to a faster increase in cost of products and services, owing to persistent pricing pressure from competitors, and increased investments in product innovations that could push R&D expenses up.
