Why Is The Chinese Government Stepping In To Help Yingli Green Energy?

Over the last few weeks, there have been reports that Yingli Green Energy will receive about 3.3 billion yuan ($500 million) in loans from the state-backed China Development Bank and the government of its home city of Baoding, as the beleaguered solar firm tries to reorganize its balance sheet.   The support would mark one of the most significant interventions by the state in recent years to shore up a struggling solar company, considering that the government largely allowed players such as Suntech Power and LDK Solar to go bankrupt after they failed to service their debts. So why exactly is the government stepping in to help Yingli and what could the support mean for the company?

The Taiwanese Earthquake That Nearly Flattened The Apple iPhone 7

Apple’s supply chain managers opted for a sole supplier strategy. The benefits may produce lower cost and enhanced innovation, but should a disruption occur, it would completely wipe out production. However, given the clustering of many advanced industries, buying from many suppliers can still lead to orders falling in the same geographic area, with the same devastating risks of a sole supplier strategy if a major event occurs.

14.4 million people set to buy the Xiaomi Mi 5 tomorrow

With less than 24 hours to go before the Xiaomi Mi 5 goes on sale, the company has announced that more than 14.4 million people have already registered for the opportunity to purchase the phone when it goes on sale tomorrow morning in China. While the number is staggering, there’s no guarantee that all 14 million people will actually fork over their hard earned cash to buy the phone.

Priced at RMB 1999 ($306 USD), the base level Mi 5 will have a 1.8GHz Snapdragon 820, 32GB of storage, a glass back, and 3GB of RAM. The RMB 2299 ($352 USD) tier will have a 2.15GHz Snapdragon 820, 64GB of storage, and 3GB of RAM. The RMB 2699 ($413 USD) tier is the Pro model, offering a 2.15GHz Snapdragon 820, 4GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, and a 3D ceramic back.

The phone itself may not look as appealing as Samsung’s Galaxy S7 edge, but it’s definitely worth considering since it’s only half the price of what Samsung will be asking for its flagship smartphone. Samsung and LG has the advantage of being available in North America and Europe, but Xiaomi has been hinting that its 2016 flagship may make an appearance outside Asian markets sometime this year.

Would you consider buying the Xiaomi Mi 5 if it were to go on sale in Europe or the US?

NBC’s Android app gains Chromecast support

After years of sitting around and twiddling our thumbs, the team behind the NBC app for Android have finally released an update that’s actually useful. That’s right, the latest update to the NBC app finally integrates Chromecast support. The app itself isn’t much better than previous iterations, but at least you now have the option of tapping the Chromecast icon and enjoying your favorite NBC shows on your Chromecast-connected flat screen TV.

If you have already received an update notification for the NBC app, we recommend uninstalling and reinstalling the app through Google Play so that you can start casting NBC shows as soon as possible. What mainstream media app do you hope will get Chromecast support next?

Can This Guy Fix The 200-Million Unconnected Car Problem?

Parallel parking on the mean, crowded streets of San Francisco is a grueling rite of passage most newcomers can’t avoid. They soon learn that their 18-foot vehicles don’t fit neatly into 14-ft. parking spaces, but that doesn’t stop many SUV owners from trying, repeatedly bumping whatever cars parked unfortunately in front and behind them in the process. As a witness to such offenses, Chris Carson searched for a DropCam-like solution that would alert him if his street-parked Porsche was ever victim of similar assaults. When he didn’t find one, he did the typical Silicon Valley thing: he made one. In the process, he possibly solved one of the biggest transportation hurdles looming on the horizon: connecting all those unconnected cars on the road.

Elytra texture creation guide! via /r/Minecraft

Elytra texture creation guide!

If the name doesn't make this obvious enough, this is a simple image that shows you how the different areas in the elytra texture file look in game. Since the elytra will be changeable much like skins, I figure having this resource will help many people create their own fancy wings. I hope this helps anyone interested!

Here's a small album containing a template elytra texture, and 2 screenshots to show how it looks. The texture file used is the very fist picture. It's small, so don't miss it. Use the chain helmet for directional reference

Here's what the colors in the guide are associated with (assume the elytra are activated as shown in the pictures. For reference, your player head is the front, and feet are the back.)

  • Blue: Top (the left part of this area is near the front of the elytra)
  • Light Blue: Bottom (the left part of this area is near the back end of the elytra)
  • Red: Front
  • Magenta: Back
  • Green: Inside
  • Yellow: Outside
  • No Color: Doesn't affect the elytra
