Every trade show has its themes inside and across categories, and at this year’s Mobile World Congress (MWC), smartphone modularity appeared to “win” as the biggest themes in the premium smartphone category. The dominant theme was close, as VR creation and advanced imaging were very popular as well across Huawei Technology, LG Electronics, Samsung Electronics, and Xiaomi.

Imagine, for a second, that you have a game franchise. It’s a very successful game that took a lesser known franchise and catapulted it into near-tentpole status for a major developer. It ticks all the boxes for what people like these days: open world, shooter mechanics, RPG progression, moral ambiguity, etc. It’s done very well, and it has the potential to do better. It’s on its fourth game, but there have really only been two installments in what we could consider its modern era. And so you decide, as a AAA publisher/developer, to just sort of throw it into a totally unrecognizable setting and see what happens. Seems like a weird decision, right? And yet that’s exactly what Ubisoft did with Far Cry Primal.

Xbox Live has been having some headaches recently. Connection was spotty for days last week, with the status page constantly updating as Microsoft engineers appeared to be working furiously to return stability to the gaming platform. A DDOS attack of the sort that brought both PSN and Xbox Live down last christmas may be behind the outages, and a hacker group known as “New World Hackers” has taken responsibility, adding Xbox Live to a list of other targets that range from the BBC to Donald Trump to ISIS. Newsweek recently talked to New World Hackers, offering an interesting insight into the group’s mentality. We’ve reached out to Microsoft and will update with any more information. The Department of Justice, as a matter of policy, neither confirms nor denies if they’re treating these claims as legitimate.

Puede que la fiebre de las selfies haya alcanzado un nuevo hito desde que este tipo de auto-fotos se popularizasen. Y es que, aunque parezca de broma, realizar una selfie está convirtiéndose en una actividad muy peligrosa. Según parece, desde 2014 se han registrado 49 muertes vinculadas de manera directa a esta –aparentemente arriesgada– moda.
Lo más preocupante es que, en concreto, 19 de estos fallecimientos han sucedido en India. Es en este país donde los medios han acuñado el término ‘Selfie Fever’ a la aparente adicción, la de realizar selfies, que ha golpeado a los jóvenes de la nación. Afortunadamente, parece que las autoridades han actuado para intentar frenar esta práctica en lugares peligrosos.
Concretamente, en la ciudad de Bombay se ha prohibido tomar selfies en 16 emplazamientos denominados “de alto riesgo”. Y es que, según el periódico The Guardian, el problema surge de la necesidad que sufre la sociedad actual de engrandecerse a sí mismos. Esta necesidad se ve alimentada, según The Guardian, por el constante seguimiento de diferentes celebridades y sus auto-fotos, además de la “exigencia” de tomar cada vez mejores y más imaginativas selfies.
El psicólogo de origen indio Keerti Sachdeva afirma que el problema nace de la necesidad que sienten los adolescentes en la actualidad de ser aceptados y conseguir el reconocimiento en sus semejantes. Según Sachdeva, para los jóvenes, las selfies son la manera más fácil y rápida de satisfacer su necesidad de reconocimiento en otros individuos, mostrando así los sitios que han visitado o personas con las que han estado.
Así, como parte de la medida de precaución, el ayuntamiento de Bombay ha decidido marcar lugares especialmente peligrosos, prohibiendo en estos sitios poder tomar una selfie. En su mayoría, se trata de áreas de altura sin barreras de protección o balaustradas o sitios costeros. Unos de los principales defensores de esta prohibición , el político Abhishek Ghosalkar, cita diferentes estudios psicológicos en los que se afirma que esta adicción a las selfies puede llegar a convertirse en un trastorno.
De cualquier modo, India no es el único país que tiene un problema con las selfies, ya que Rusia posee la desafortunada segunda posición en el número de muertes causadas, directa o indirectamente por auto-fotos. Según las estadísticas, las personas menores de 21 constituyen el 60% de las muertes relacionadas con selfies.

Xiaomi posted a Q & A on its own official forum with some more specific information about the newly announced Mi5. The Xiaomi Mi5 supports LTE bands: 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 7 / 8 / 12 / 13 / 17 / 18 / 19 / 20 / 25 / 26 / 27 / 28 / 29 / 38 / 39 / 40 / 41
The Mi5 will also be bootloader locked by default. The company explicitly states it does not condone or recommend that you unlock your bootloader for security reasons.
It even goes a step further and recommends that you use “Mi Cloud” services in the event that your phone does get lost or stolen. An unlocked bootloader will not protect your data in either of these cases.
Besides this information, the Q&A also talks about general differences between the new Mi5 models, specs, pricing and availability.
The Mi5 will launch in the company’s home country of China and will be available on March 1 for a price of around $300. This makes the Mi5 the cheapest phone with a Snapdragon 820 CPU…

Thanks to a leaked slide, it seems that the Samsung Galaxy S7 will have a very unique carrier lock mechanism. Carrier devices that usually would be sold locked (or occasionally unlocked) will now be sold completely unlocked, but will lock themselves to the first carrier SIM that’s inserted.
This is interesting because it’ll technically be an unlocked phone from the factory, both hardware and software wise. Inserting a carrier SIM before first boot will install the carrier software, which will lock the device to that carrier. Maybe this means someone will be able to get around the device installing carrier software?
We probably won’t see this in the US, since our carriers have logos and branding all over the device. Nonetheless, it’s an interesting approach to carrier locks. You’ll still be able to unlock the device using an unlock code as usual, and factory unlocked devices will not be affected. What do you guys think? Is this preferable to regular carrier locks?
