Cubot and Cheetah Mobile unveil the CheetahPhone, headed to Europe for €199

It’s not every day that a phone maker partners with a company known for creating mobile apps in order to design a new handset, but that’s exactly what’s going on with Cubot and Cheetah Mobile. They’re both Chinese companies, but that hasn’t stopped them from jointly unveiling the CheetahPhone at MWC in Barcelona today.

Unlike many other Chinese devices, this one is officially on its way to Europe, where you’ll be able to pre-order it from Amazon for €199 sans contract. Pre-orders will start on March 20, and the phone will start shipping at some point in April. After that, it will also be launched in Africa.

So what do you get for that amount of money? Well, the CheetahPhone packs a 5.5-inch 1080p touchscreen, a 13 MP Samsung-made rear camera with LED flash, and an 8 MP selfie snapper. It’s powered by the MediaTek MT6753 chipset, which comes with a 1.5 GHz octa-core Cortex-A53 CPU and the Mali-T720 GPU. Built-in storage is 32GB, which is complemented by 10GB of cloud storage and a microSD card slot. 3GB of RAM will ensure the apps running in the background never have to close because of low memory. A fingerprint scanner is on the back.

The CheetahPhone runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow, on top of which there’s the Cubot launcher which has been optimized by Cheetah Mobile. All of the Cheetah Mobile apps come preinstalled, and they are deeply integrated into the UI. Its makers boast that the CheetahPhone is exactly as long and as wide as the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge, though not as slim. The battery capacity is still a mystery…

My Proudest Moment as a Gamer Dad via /r/Minecraft

My Proudest Moment as a Gamer Dad

My 11-yr old daughter comes to my office in tears:

"Dad, I was playing Hunger Games on a server and having a good time, when everyone started accusing me of hacking!"

I say, "Huh…so, were you cheating?"

"Of course not, I don't even know how!"

Stroking my chin and trying to stifle a chuckle, I ask "Why do you think they would say that?"

At this point, she gets a bit defensive: "Because I won the game with an iron sword and some crappy armor, and the other players were noobs?"

I laugh, give her a big hug, and say "Welcome to the world of elite PVP my child. Congratulations, you are so good they think you're cheating!"

She stopped crying, and I gave her a hearty fist-bump.

You go, girlfriend.

Microsoft updates Next Lockscreen for Android

In case you forgot, Microsoft has this useful Next Lockscreen app for Android, which replaces your default lockscreen. It has been around since late October 2014.

The app has been updated quite a few times throughout the years, sometimes with new features. Today, the Next Lockscreen gets another major update with new functionalities and bug fixes.

The new version of Next Lockscreen for Android supports PIN, pattern, and fingerprint (if available) unlock. The smart lock can be based on location (work, home).

The location awareness also allows the new Next Lockscreen to change your wallpapers based on your location.

A new feature called Smart Contacts premieres with the new version. The Next Lockscreen learns the contacts you communicate with the most and will offer shortcuts for them in the lockscreen.

The Next Lockscreen retains its previous features – Weather, App shortcuts, Calendar, Music controls, quick access to the camera, flashlight, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, among others.

You can get the new version from the Play…

La familia Sony Xperia Z desaparece: no habrá Sony Xperia Z6

Sony Xperia X precio Stand MWC16

Can Technology Save Journalism?

Ten years ago, in a moment of characteristic prescience, the Economist asked, “Who Killed Newspapers?” The year was 2006, and already, the Internet posed an existential challenge to an industry that only several decades earlier seemed unassailable.  While the question was then, and remains, relevant to the broader world of journalism, the Economist observed that “of all the ‘old’ media, newspapers have the most to lose from the internet.”
