Minecraft “Lootcrate” in Launcher News Feed Today (RANT)

WARNING: THIS IS A RANT! Ok, so if you launched Minecraft this morning inside the U.S., you saw news of "Minecrate" in your launcher news feed available to those willing to cough up $30.00 (US). Click on the link to the website and find a slick page design to make you drool for what inside the "Box" though you won't know until you pay for and get one… Now I have subscribed to "Lootcrate" before, and its not as great as it lets on, (the best things I ever got was a cool t-shirt, and a Minecraft keychain that broke after the first use… definitely not worth $30.00) so I am not too enthusiastic for this novelty sale. Now, I can't really see paying as much as what the game costs for a box of cheap crap… Beside that point… I am a bit miffed for the embarrassing way that Mojang has decided to "use" the Minecraft "launcher news feed" in the first place. For the past six months to a years, I have not seen one single line about snapshots, release dates, company news other than sales related bulletins or "security updates" (thank-you Microsoft). Hell, there is more posted here on reddit for Minecraft news than in the launcher, and most of it is gleaned off of Dinnerbone and other Mojang employee's tweets! Pathetic… really pathetic.

Oppo introduces sensor-based image stabilization technology for mobiles

As previously scheduled, Oppo held its MWC press conference today, but sadly no new handsets were unveiled at the Barcelona venue. Still, the Chinese giant did not disappoint the eager crowd and brought a couple of interesting new technologies to showcase.

Besides Super VOOC charging technology, which we already covered, the OEM also unveiled its latest inovating in mobile photography – SmartSensor Image Stabilization.

Oppo claims that this is not only the first sensor-based image stabilization technology on mobile, but also the smallest stabilizer in the world. In essence, the technology is similar to the one seen in many sensor-based mirrorless cameras, just shrunk down to size.

While this may make it sound pretty straight-forward, it’s quite advanced. Current OIS systems typically rely on a system where the lens moves to compensate for vibrations, generally through the use of spring mechanisms. In contrast, the new system moves the sensor itself around through a voltage-driven sensor drive.

Oppo claims that this breakthrough tech has quite a few advantages over the optical-based ones. For one, it is a lot faster with movements taking as little as 15 milliseconds, as opposed to 50ms in OIS. It is also a lot more precise and able to correct vibrations as little as 0.3 μm, which is about a third of the size of a typical mobile sensor pixel. Also, whereas lens systems only work on two axes, Oppo’s SmartSensor can make corrections to the pitch, yaw and roll axis. Last, but not least, it offers reduced power consumption.

Just like the impressive Super VOOC technology, this all sounds very promising, but, sadly, there was no word as to if and when we might see the technology make its way into actual…

Ahora puedes ser el primero en tener las novedades de WhatsApp a través de Google Play

Dejamos de banda el Mobile World Congress en Barcelona por un momento y nos centramos en una reciente noticia igual o más importante que incluso lo que se pueda presentar en el MWC. WhatsApp, el servicio de mensajería de Facebook número 1 en España, ha entrado dentro del programa de versiones beta de su aplicación de Google Play.

Hasta ahora, instalábamos WhatsApp a través de la Play Store, como una aplicación normal y corriente, pero si queríamos disfrutar de las últimas actualizaciones o novedades diversas, teníamos que dirigirnos a su página web oficial y descargar el archivo .APK. Semanas después, la actualización llegaba a la tienda de Google, y entonces sí que todo el mundo gozaba de su última versión. A partir de ahora pero, todo cambia con su plan betas.

Forma parte de la beta de WhatsApp

Desde ayer mismo que WhatsApp introducía de manera discreta su programa para descargar las últimas betas de su aplicación. WhatsApp ha optado por el programa de betas de Google Play, es decir, para formar parte de él tan solo tendremos que hacer click en este enlace y estaremos registrados como miembros testers de su aplicación.

Tras aceptar formar parte de su programa, WhatsApp se nos actualizará automáticamente en nuestro dispositivo Android conectado a cualquier Wi-Fi, y de esta forma, todas las versiones de WhatsApp que se instalen serán una beta desarrollada por ellos mismos. En consecuencia, estaremos ayudando a WhatsApp a la vez que gozamos de manera anticipada a las últimas novedades que se puedan incorporar en este popular servicio de mensajería.

Por ejemplo, si instalabas la última versión de WhatsApp desde su web podías disfrutar de los nuevos iconos semanas antes que el resto de personas, ya que WhatsApp en la Play Store no se actualizó con esos nuevos iconos hasta hace una semana.

En un principio, tras formar parte de su beta, nosotros y todo el resto de usuarios del programa tendremos la última versión de WhatsApp disponible sin tener que acceder a su página web y descargar la versión en cuestión, sino que se nos actualizará mediante Google Play automáticamente.

En definitiva, una muy buena noticia para uno de los servicios de mensajería instantánea del momento, y quien sabe si esto es el inicio de una oleada de nuevas innovaciones en la aplicación, como por ejemplo videollamadas, gifs o nuevas funciones de la mano de Facebook.
