Can “Instant Articles” Drive Revenues For Facebook?

Facebook recently announced that it is opening up its Instant Articles program to all publishers starting April 12th.   Instant Articles was launched by Facebook in May last year, starting with just a few publishers, The company currently works with a few hundred publishers, making their content available on Facebook and creating an immersive reading experience for its users. While the company is working on tools to make this program available broadly to any publisher of any size globally, it is also working to reduce the load time of these articles, especially on mobile phones, so as to make it a fast and easy way for publishers to reach their audiences. It also provides the publisher full control over its data and ads. We believe this move will expand Facebook’s content, leading to better user engagement. And with tools to create mobile friendly content and a favorable revenue sharing agreement, it should attract additional publishers, thus driving revenues for Facebook. However, Facebook’s ability to manage the quality of the content it receives will be an important factor in the success of this program.

Lexmark Printer Hardware Revenues To Decline, Perceptive To Increase, As Alternatives Are Reviewed

Lexmark International is set to release its Q4 2015 results on February 23rd.  As the company transitions from its low-margin hardware business to higher margin software and services, we expect that the company will continue to report slight decline in revenues, albeit its profitability will increase. However, revenues from past acquisitions should offset the decline in organic revenues to some extent, especially with the Perceptive software division. Nevertheless, weaker printer supplies and hardware demand will continue to impact revenues. Additionally, we will look for additional commentary on the review of strategic alternatives the company initiated last fall. Reports have recently appeared that both its hardware and software businesses have attracted potential buyers. We suspect management will have little to say if, in fact, discussions are underway.

Microsoft Is Scared To Release HoloLens Because Of The Kinect’s Failure

While Sony is gearing up to release PlayStation VR by the end of the year, likely following two other VR releases by HTC and Oculus, Microsoft is approaching the new market with a bit more hesitancy. Though they have deals worked out with Oculus (which is why you get an Xbox controller with purchase), their own headset, the Augmented Reality-based HoloLens, does not seem poised to launch anytime soon, despite theoretically being consumer-ready.
