Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 edge benchmarked (the Exynos flavor)

The Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge splashed down at the MWC and while their cameras and screens are the biggest improvements, they come with brand new chipsets, which we promptly benchmarked.

We tested both the S7 and S7 edge and the difference in form factor didn’t make a difference in performance, so we united their scores.

Note that this is the Exynos 8890 chipset, which is built on a 14nm process and features a total of eight custom Samsung cores – four small and four big ones. They work in tandem with Mali-T880 GPU to deliver awesome performance.

AnTuTu 6 shows a sizeable jump in performance over the old guard, the S6 edge+.

Then there’s the GPU. The Sony Xperia Z5 Premium has a Snapdragon 810 chipset, but it’s meant to feed its monstrous 4K display and it actually topped the Galaxy S7 in a few tests.

Lenovo unveiled the new Vibe K5 and K5 Plus mid-rangers

Lenovo was far from centrestage today at WMC, but it didn’t skip on the venue altogether. It now has two new budget-friendly mid-rangers to add to its portfolio, which almost managed to slip by unnoticed amidst all the commotion.

The Vibe K5 and Vibe K5 Plus share most of their hardware platform, as evident by the name. Both have a 5-inch display – 720p in the basic one and 1080p in the Plus model. The other major difference has to do with the processors – a Snapdragon 415 inside the Vibe K5 and a Snapdragon 616 for the Plus variant. The rest of their shared specsheet includes 2GB of LPDDR3 RAM, 16GB of storage, plus a microSD card slot and a 2,750 mAh user-replaceable battery.

The camera setup consists of a 13MP main shooter and a 5MP one on the front. Also, both devices are LTE-enabled, Dual SIM and boot Android 5.1 Lollipop. Last, but not least, the K5 family looks to be audio-centric with Doubly Atmos support and two speakers on board.

Pricing is said to be $129 and $149 respectively and availability is still unknown, although it is already clear they won’t be hitting the US…

US pricing for the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge is out

The Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge are the company’s most important phones of 2016 and AT&T has rushed to announce plans and prices for the duo.

The two smartphones will be available for purchase on March 11.

AT&T
Samsung Galaxy S7AT&T will offer the Galaxy S7 with its 30-month Next 24 plan starting at $23.17/month for the 32GB version of the device.

Samsung Galaxy S7 edge
The same Next 24, 30-month installment plan is available for the 32GB Galaxy S7 edge, but it’s a bit pricier at $26.50/month.

The carrier will offer both devices in Black Onyx and Golf Platinum color options. The Galaxy S7 edge will enjoy an addition option – Silver Titanium.

While AT&T hasn’t yet listed the off-contract prices for the devices, we assume they’ll cost $699 for the Galaxy S7 and $799 for the Galaxy S7 edge.

T-Mobile

Samsung Galaxy S7
T-Mobile will offer the Galaxy S7 starting $27.91/month for the 32GB model.

As for the Galaxy S7 edge, it will start $32.50/month on T-Mobile for its basic 24 month plan.

Sprint

Samsung Galaxy S7 Finally, Sprint will offer the the Galaxy S7 starting $27.09 per month.

The HTC Vive will be available early April for $799

If you’ve been hoping HTC’s Vive VR headset would cost less than the Oculus Rift, even though rumors have said otherwise, we have some bad news for you. HTC has announced the final price of the Vive, saying the device will go on sale in early April for $799.

While $799 may seem like a lot, there is some good news there. Yes it costs $200 more than the Oculus Rift, but it comes with a front-facing awareness camera, two location sensors for a more immersive VR experience and two haptic-enabled motion controllers. Considering Oculus doesn’t even have motion controllers released yet, let alone priced, the Vive may end up being a good deal once everything is said and done. $799 also gets you two games, Job Simulator: The 2050 Archives by Owlchemy Labs and Fantastic Contraption by Northway Games.

As far as availability is concerned, the Vive will go up for pre-order on February 29, and will be in consumer hands by early April.

Galaxy S7 coming to all major wireless carriers in the US, pre-orders come with a Gear VR bundle

Now that the Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge have been announced, you’re probably asking yourself when you can get one, where you can get one and what kind of cool stuff do they come with?

So far Verizon, Sprint, AT&T, T-Mobile and Cricket have announced they will carry the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge, with all but Cricket announcing pre-orders will open on February 23 with the devices being available March 11.

If you pre-order from the official Samsung website, you will get a free Gear VR bundle that comes with six games. T-Mobile lists the full retail price at $670 and $780 for the S7 and S7 Edge, so you can expect the retail price to be around that price everywhere. Of course, everyone has their own special installment plan program now, so you don’t have to pay that all up front. It’s worth noting that Sprint is selling the S7 buy one, get one half off for a limited time. If that’s your carrier of choice, jump on it.

Después de una prolongada espera, por fin están aquí dos de los smartphones más esperados este año 2016. Con la presentación de estos dos magníficos terminales, se han resuelto las pocas dudas que podían quedar acerca de sus características y especificaciones, aunque puede que más de uno o una se lleve alguna que otra sorpresa.

El año pasado, Samsung rompió con su tradición del uso de materiales como el plástico para utilizar otros más premium como el metal y el cristal. Parece que la táctica ha funcionado, y es que los Samsung Galaxy S7 y S7 edge presumen de componentes dignos de tope de gama, predominando el vidrio y los bordes metálicos. De esta manera, la firma coreana da continuidad a la estética conseguida y diseño de calidad que hizo de los S6 y S6 edge referentes en su campo.

Tal y como se puede apreciar estamos antes dos de los mejores dispositivos del año. En el interior del Galaxy S7 y S7 edge encontramos el todopoderoso Exynos 8 Octa 8890 de ocho núcleos a 2,3 GHz, el cual comparte protagonismo con su semejante de Qualcomm, el Snapdragon 820 a 2,15 GHz. Acompañando a ambos dispositivos encontraremos 4 GB de RAM LPDDR4, lo último y más veloz en el mercado para dispositivos móviles.

En lo referente a almacenamiento, existirán versiones de 32 o 64 GB de memoria , ambas ampliables a través de ranura para tarjetas microSD de hasta 128 GB, lo cual se postula como una de las más añoradas características de este dispositivo. Y es que, por razones desconocidas, Samsung había omitido la posibilidad de introducir más memoria a través de microSDs en los S6 y S6 edge.

Cámara

Dentro del apartado fotográfico vemos una de las mejoras más significantes en los modelos de los buques insignia de este año. Y es que, aunque la firma coreana haya reducido el número de megapíxeles, Samsung ha ampliado la apertura del sensor fotográfico, lo que permitirá mejoras significantes en condiciones de poca luz. No sólo eso, sino que además Samsung ha agrandado el tamaño de los píxeles hasta un 56%, además de implementar la tecnología Dual Pixel Sensor.

Afortunadamente, en esta generación de flagships, no existirá uno de los mayores inconvenientes de los que se quejaban los usuarios en la pasada: el entorno de la cámara sobresalía. En los Galaxy S7 y S7 edge, vemos como Samsung ha “ensanchado” el cuerpo del dispositivo, consiguiendo que no sobresalga de manera tan exagerada el anillo protector alrededor de la cámara.

Batería y software

Otro punto positivo por el que hay que congratular a Samsung es el incremento de mAh en las baterías de sendos buques insignias. Quizás uno de los puntos más flojos del Galaxy S6, la batería de 2550 mAh dejaba muchísimo que desear, teniendo en cuenta la resolución y tamaño de la pantalla del terminal. Sin embargo, en los Galaxy S7 y S7 edge, el amperaje de la batería da un gran salto hasta los 3.000 mAh y 3.600 mAh respectivamente.

En cuanto al software, veremos Android 6.0 Marshmallow bajo la capa de personalización de TouchWiz. En esta versión de TouchWiz, Samsung ha introducido nuevas funcionalidades que prometen, entre otras cosas, darle más juego a la pantalla curva del S7 edge. Asimismo, la firma coreana implementa Always On Display, Game Launcher y Samsung Pay.

En Game Launcher, podremos configurar y personalizar el rendimiento para cada juego de manera individualizada. Además será posible realizar streaming a través de YouTube y bloquear los botones para que no sean pulsados de manera accidental mientras jugamos.

Precio y disponibilidad

El Samsung Galaxy S7 costará la considerable suma de 719 euros, mientras que el S7 edge podrá ser adquirido por 819 euros. Ambos dispositivos se pueden reservar ya a través de la página oficial de Samsung, aunque podrán comprarse de manera oficial a partir del 11 de marzo.

Ya sabemos los precios de los nuevos Samsung Galaxy S7 y Samsung Galaxy S7 edge, terminales que Samsung acaba de presentar en el MWC 2016, y que ya se pueden precomprar en su página web. Como premio a los primeros compradores, la compañía surcoreana regalará las Samsung Gear VR para poder disfrutar de la realidad virtual.

Además, los que compren ahora recibirán el teléfono 3 días antes de su lanzamiento oficial, que está fijado para el próximo día 11 de marzo. Así, los primeros envíos saldrían el día 8.

Especificaciones de los Samsung Galaxy S7 y S7 edge

Una vez más, Samsung vuelve a ofrecernos un par de topes de gama con la última tecnología en todos los sentidos. Pantalla de alta resolución, los últimos procesadores del mercado, y una cámara que, aunque han decidido bajar de resolución, promete dar mejores resultados que la de los Samsung Galaxy S6, al menos en condiciones de baja luminosidad gracias a un focal f/1.7 y otros avances.

También se ha mejorado en las baterías, dotándolas de mayor capacidad, por lo que la autonomía también debería ser superior.

Respecto al Samsung Galaxy S7 de 32 GB, su precio es de 719 euros, mientras que el Samsung Galaxy S7 edge nos costará 100 euros más, es decir, 819 euros, también en su versión de 32 GB. Para las variantes de 64 y 128 GB todavía no hay confirmación sobre el precio pero es de esperar que se eleve unos 100 o 150 respectivamente. Cabe destacar que también se podrá comprar a través de distribuidores oficiales, tanto operadoras como Orange, Movistar, Vodafone o Yoigo, como en comercios como MediaMarkt, Phone House o El Corte Inglés.

Como decíamos al principio, ya se pueden precomprar en la página de Samsung, con los primeros envíos a realizarse el 8 de marzo.
