The Microsoft Surface Book officially on sale in the UK

If you’re the type of guy that craves a powerful and portable laptop you can easily have on you at all times, then Microsoft’s new Surface Book surely caught your attention after its announcement last October. As the company’s own head of devices stated, it is:

Overall, we are definitely inclined to believe the statement, with specs for the hybrid device going all the way up to a 6th generation Intel Core i7 processor, 16GB of RAM and a discreet NVIDIA GeForce GPU. Pre-orders started at the beginning of January in many places, including the UK, but today official sales have finally kicked off.

Prices remain unchanged ranging from GBP 1,299 for an entry Core i5, 8GB of RAM, 128GB storage and no GPU one, all the way up to an eye-watering GBP 2,249 for the aforementioned top model.

You can order the Surface Book from the Microsoft store, linked in the source, as well as a few other retailers, like Amazon, Currys / PC World and John Lewis. As a final note, if you do intend to spoil yourself and shell out for the transforming PC, it is worth mentioning that many users have been experiencing Windows 10 related power issues with it – a point that might be worth looking into before the purchase.

CAT S60: world’s first smartphone with built-in thermal camera

The new CAT S60 is more than a smartphone – it’s a professional tool. It’s the first smartphone to feature an integrated thermal camera.

It can measure the temperature of objects from 15m-30m (50ft-100ft) away and can even see through smoke. It can, for example, be used by firefighters to look for people in a smoke-filled building or just a contractor to check your insulation.

The thermal camera is courtesy of Flir and shows 640 x 480px thermal video. That’s actually pretty good, the Seek Thermal only manages 206 x 156px.

Anyway, the CAT S60 goes beyond casual smartphone toughness. If you batten down the hatches (closing the mouth and earpieces with the yellow covers), it can go under 5m of water. Otherwise, the limit is 2m.

CAT dropped the phone 26 times from 1.8m (6ft) to make sure it survives hard hits. The display is covered with 1mm Gorilla Glass 4 (normal phones get 0.4mm) and very bright – 540nits. The touchscreen works with gloves, of course.

You also get a beefy 3,800mAh battery to last you a long day at work and a 105dB loudspeaker. The rest of the CAT S60 put it in the mid-range – 4.7″ 720p screen, Snapdragon 617 with 3GB of RAM and 32GB storage. The phone runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow and offers 4G LTE connectivity. There’s also a 13MP main camera, 5MP selfie cam.

The CAT S60 will be shown off at the MWC and will retail later this year for $600/€650. Keep in mind that a Flir One (a smartphone add-on thermal camera) alone costs $250.

vivo XPlay5 confirmed, to come with dual-curved display

The XPlay5 has been finally confirmed by vivo – the Chinese company outed a teaser that reveals the name of its upcoming flagship. The device is said to be the successor to the Xplay3S smartphone launched way back in 2013.

In addition to the name, vivo also confirmed an important design aspect of the XPlay5. The company released another teaser revealing that the handset will feature dual-curved display.

[APK] Google introduce Gmailify, una mejor forma para la gestión de tus cuentas no-Gmail

Al igual que sucede en las tiendas de apps y videojuegos de cada uno de los SO más importantes del momento, como son iOS y Android, donde podemos ver apps de Google en la App Store o apps de iOS en la Google Play Store, esto mismo está ocurriendo con los proveedores de correo de cada uno de los principales actores de esa categoría como son Gmail, Outlook o Yahoo. En el mes de diciembre del año pasado Yahoo anunció que cualquier usuario podría utilizar su cuenta Gmail en el cliente de correo de Yahoo para que desde una misma app se pueda gestionar todo el correo entrante desde distintas cuentas ya sea su procedencia. Una interesante apuesta por estos servicios que se van integrando entre ellos para ofrecer mayores ventajas a los usuarios, aunque siempre mirarán por lo suyo, lógicamente.

La propia Google empezó con este cambio de política el año pasado cuando permitió las cuentas no-Gmail en su app Gmail, pero digamos que perderías todas esas características destacables de Google que vienen de por si con esta aplicación. Ahora, podrás obtener todas esas funcionalidades de Google en tu email sin tener que migrar a una dirección de correo de Gmail. Google lo ha llamado como “Gmailify”. En el momento Gmailify funciona de momento con Yahoo y Outlook/Hotmail. Solamente has de activar Gmailify y en el momento obtendrás ciertas características que anteriormente solamente estaban disponibles en las direcciones del cliente de correo de Google.

No nos vamos a dejar sorprender por la forma que tiene Google de llamar a estas adaptaciones a nuevas formas de ofrecer servicios a los usuarios. Si Yahoo lo anunció de forma bien escueta la capacidad de gestionar tu cuenta Gmail desde su app en Android, Google le da nombre y todo a una serie de características que obtendrás al gestionar tu cuenta no Gmail desde la propia Gmail.

La democratización de Gmail

Uno de los aspectos más potentes de Gmailify es el filtro de spam, que es de mayor calidad que el que utilizan otros proveedores de email. Si a esto le unimos la habilidad para organizar la bandeja de entrada según el tipo de emails que sean, se le otorga una gran capacidad a esa gestión de correos electrónicos que provengan de Yahoo o Hotmail/Outlook.

Digamos que se apunta un buen tanto al dotar a esas cuentas no Gmail de una serie de funcionalidades evidentes y a las que estamos todos bien acostumbrados. Hemos destacado la capacidad de Gmail para clasificar los emails según su tipo y esa gran habilidad para el spam. Dos especiales virtudes con las que podrás equipar a tu cuenta de Yahoo o Hotmail para que a partir de ahora solamente tengas un cliente de correo instalado en tu teléfono móvil.

La otra gran idea de Google es que después de que un usuario que ha sido acérrimo con su Yahoo o Hotmail, pruebe Gmail finalmente, y al tiempo se de cuenta que está ante un mejor cliente de correo, por lo que posiblemente poco a poco se pase a usar más su cuenta de Gmail en vez de esas que utilizaba anteriormente.
