In today’s outcome-driven economy, we’re seeing more and more businesses adopting processes they can plug into quickly—delivered as-a-service. To compete in an increasingly connected, always-on world, they seek the flexibility to start small, pay only for the services they use, quickly discern what’s working from what’s not and continue driving results. And they want to do it all at scale.

Time Inc. announced last week that it was purchasing a controlling interest in Viant, the owner of Myspace, one of the more fabled brands from the early Internet era. It’s official, Microsoft has finally begun building strong brand equity and recognition with their Surface line of products. What years ago, back in the days of Steve Ballmer, was a boat anchor revenue drain for Redmond, has now become a crown jewel of the company. The latest iteration of the Surface Pro 4 and the new Surface Book are defining examples of best-of-class implementations of the company’s Windows 10 operating system and user experience value proposition, for Microsoft’s OEM partners to take cues from. In fact, certain high-end configurations of Surface Book have initially experienced pent-up, dare I say “Apple-like,” demand though the company has recently started taking orders again for availability in early March. It’s safe to say Microsoft wants to expand on its Surface success and recent rumors of a “Surface phone” seem to hat-tip in that direction, though perhaps not as directly as Redmond’s recent patent filing.
