Bing for Android update brings it on par with iOS app, new design and features are in

Microsoft has updated its Bing app for Android today, finally bringing it on par with the iOS version. This means the Android app has received a big redesign (which you can see in the screenshots below), as well as many new features.

You can scan barcodes for products, and you’ll get prices and customer reviews from big online retailers. If you search for “gas” or go to the Near Me section and select the Gas bubble you’ll get fresh gas prices for your area. Then you can easily navigate to the station you’re interested in.

The redesigned home page requires just one tap to get to lists of restaurants, movies, images, videos, maps, deals, and attractions near you. Swiping up from the bottom lets you check out the current weather conditions and stay up to date with the major news stories of the day.

The new Bing for Android is already available in the Google Play Store.

Huawei’s Honor 5X is now available in Europe from £169.99 or €209.99

It’s February 4, so Huawei’s countdown timer is gone from the page listing the Honor 5X in its European online store. Yes, the company’s latest affordable smartphone is now available to buy if you’re in Europe.

Thankfully this means we now know how much it costs. The normal price is £189.99, €229.99, or CHF 229.90, depending on where you are. However, by just entering your email address in a form that can be found on the same page, you’ll instantly receive a discount code which you can use to take that price down by £20, €20, or CHF 20. So essentially you’ll be paying £169.99, €209.99, or CHF 209.90 for the device – while this promo code offer is still available. There’s no telling how long it will last, though.

Currently both the silver and grey versions of the Honor 5X are in stock and ready to be delivered to you, while for the gold model you will have to wait a few days (the exact number of which varies based on the country you order from). The Honor 5X can be purchased direct from Huawei if you are in the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Switzerland.

The phone comes with a 5.5-inch 1080p touchscreen, a 13 MP rear camera with LED flash, a 5 MP selfie shooter, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 615 chipset (with a 1.5 GHz octa-core Cortex-A53 CPU), 2GB of RAM, 16GB of expandable storage, 4G support, and a 3,000 mAh battery. Todos los smartphones tienen radio FM, en muchos casos deshabilitada

Un smartphone moderno es un dispositivo muy complejo. Por esto mismo no debería sorprendernos que algunos de sus componentes ni siquiera se usan. Algo muy común es que exista un chip durmiente en el interior de la carcasa, algo que los usuarios no saben que tienen pero que está ahí, solo que deshabilitado.

Por ejemplo, un componente que al menos dos tercios de las placas base de los smartphones tienen integrado y que en muchos casos se deshabilita es el chip de la radio FM. Apple, Samsung y LG, según hemos podido saber gracias a NPR, tienen la costumbre de deshabilitar su chips de radio FM –ya hablamos de ello en el caso del Samsung Galaxy S4–, mientras que HTC y Motorola no tienen componentes bloqueados.

A nivel de operadoras, en general en Estados Unidos suelen alentar a los fabricantes para que activen los chips en los teléfonos que los usuarios compran a través de sus tiendas. Para quienes no podían usar sus chips FM, existían alternativas en streaming como TuneIn Radio.

¿Debe ser el chip de radio FM obligatorio?

Una propuesta de ley llevada a cabo por el grupo de presión de la National Association of Broadcasters –junto con el ente público de la radio estadounidense– quería hacer obligatorio que los chips de radio estuviesen habilitados. Además de esto, incluso crearon una aplicación gratuita que habilitaba los chips FM en al menos 58 smartphones conocidos, usando los auriculares como antena.

Por su parte, los representantes de la industria móvil aseguran que la mayoría de los usuarios se han pasado a los podcasta y aplicaciones de streaming musical como Spotify, lo que significa que la demanda de escuchar la radio tradicional puede que desaparezca en el futuro. Según los mismos representantes, la radio tradiconal no permite el streaming, la descarga y la creación de listas de reproducción, de forma que se satisfagan sus preferencias personales.

Sin embargo, un chip de radio FM es más factible tecnológicamente que el streaming. El streaming drena la batería del smartphone de tres a cinco veces más rápido que escuchar el mismo contenido a través de la radio. Además de eso, está el espinoso tema del consumo de datos móviles, que se puede disparar.

Esto abre un interesante debate sobre sobre si se debería alentar que los fabricantes activasen el chip FM en sus terminales. ¿Qué opináis vosotros?
