Symantec 2016Q3 Earnings Preview: Enterprise Security Software in Focus

Security software giant Symantec is slated to report its fiscal 2016 third quarter results on February 4th.  (Fiscal years end with March.) The company’s performance is expected to benefit from the sale of the flailing Veritas information management business, which was hitherto a drag on its overall performance. Last month, Symantec provided an update on the expected third quarter results. It anticipated reporting GAAP revenue, non-GAAP operating margin and non-GAAP diluted EPS above the guidance provided with the second quarter results.

Yahoo Earnings: Plans To Turnaround Announced Even As Core Revenue Declines

Yahoo! reported its fourth-quarter earnings Tuesday, February 2nd .  The company’s core advertising revenues (including Traffic Acquisition Cost or TAC) improved by 2% year on year to $1.273 billion. However, revenues excluding TAC narrowly achieved company’s guidance and declined by 15% to $1.002 billion, indicating that the company failed to make meaningful headway in its core business. Furthermore, its adjusted EBITDA declined by 48% to $215 million. Nevertheless, Yahoo continued to report improvement in performance in the up and coming Mobile, Video, Native and Social (MVNS, or more commonly MaVeNS) ads vertical during the quarter. While GAAP MVNS revenues (including TAC) grew by 26% to $472 million, non-Maven (i.e., MVNS) revenues were flat at $750 million. Additionally, mobile revenue grew by 15% to $291 million, while PC ads revenue improved by 6.7% to $931 million.

Latest Pebble firmware update brings custom messages, third party access to the step and sleep tracker

The latest firmware update for Pebble’s various wearables is going out today. To install version 3.9 on your smartwatch, your Pebble app for iOS or Android needs to be up to date first (the required iterations are 3.6 for iPhone and 3.9 for Android).

The newest firmware brings with it an API for the Pebble Health step and sleep tracker, which means developers are now able to use those stats for apps and watch faces. Health-enabled watch faces will show up in the Pebble appstore soon. Speaking of Pebble Health, this now allows you to show step distance in kilometers and not miles. It’s also more accurate overall.

If you use an iPhone, you can send custom responses to received messages through your Pebble smartwatch. As shown above, you set up your canned messages using the Pebble app for iOS first, then you’ll be able to choose from those options once your wearable notifies you of a new message.

If your handset runs Android, you can reply to incoming calls with a text message. Instead of answering a call, you send a voice note, emoji, or a custom message. And with the Send Text app for Android you can even start conversations from your Pebble. MMS notifications have descriptive icons from this point on, and they show any text that’s included.

Finally, the Watch-Only Mode which kicks in when your Pebble’s battery is low now has a new look and gives you more time to find your smartwatch’s…

Alcatel OneTouch Pop 4 lineup leaks ahead of MWC – meet the Pop 4S, Pop 4 Plus, and Pop 4

TCL, the owner of the Alcatel OneTouch brand, is going to unveil a new Pop 4 lineup of smartphones at the MWC later this month. All of those leaked Pop 4 devices should be priced attractively low.

Alcatel OneTouch Pop 4S is the flagship smartphone of the Pop 4 series with a 5.5″ 1080p IPS display and Helio X10 chipset. The X10 SoC has been around for a while, and it turned out to be a favorite for the mid-range class. The particular chip in the Pop 4S will be offering an octa-core Cortex-A53 processor (4x 1.8GHz and 4x 1.0GHz), Mali-T860 GPU, and 2GB of RAM.

The rest of the specs include 16/32GB expandable storage, a 13MP main camera with phase-detection and dual-LED flash, and a 5/8MP selfie snapper. Finally, the Pop 4S is LTE-enabled (Cat.4/Cat.6), utilizes a 2,960 mAh battery, and runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

Alcatel OneTouch Pop 4 Plus also has a 5.5″ IPS display, but with a lower 720p resolution. It is powered by the Snapdragon 210 chip with a quad-core 1.1GHz Cortex-A7, Adreno 304 GPU, and 1.5GB RAM.

The Pop 4 Plus will offer 16GB expandable storage, LTE Cat.4 connectivity, an 8 or 13MP main camera with an LED flash, a 5 or 8MP selfie shooter, and a 2,500 mAh battery. Android Marshmallow is in charge of operations, too.

Finally, the Alcatel OneTouch Pop 4 is an entry-level offer with a 5″ 720p display and the same Snapdragon 210 chipset as the Pop 4 Plus. The Pop 4 will be available with 1GB or 1.5GB RAM, depending on the market. Also depending on the market are the main camera – 8 or 13 MP, as well as the selfie snapper – 5 or 8 MP.

The fixed specs available for all modes are the LTE Cat.4 connectivity, the 2,500 mAh battery, and Android 6.0 Marshmallow OS.

All these three droids will premiere at the MWC in Barcelona later this month. And if they are indeed at the MWC floors, we’ll deliver some shots and first-hand impressions to…

Podcasts have arrived in Play Music for select users

Well, it would seem that when Bill Simmons let slip yesterday that podcasts would be hitting Google Play Music soon, he hadn’t jumped the gun by much. Some users are now seeing the podcast integration in Play Music, but as is so often the case with Google, this is happening server side and isn’t simply part of a Play Music update.

Sadly, I find myself in the familiar position of not being one of the chosen few in the early test group, so we need to rely on screenshots from others. The folks over at Android Police were tipped to a number of screenshots shared by Curtis Bond on his LogiKBoard blog. We’ll include a few screenshots here, but hit the source link to see them all.

As you can see, things are pretty bare bones at the moment. Basic search and subscription functionality are there and the artwork displays nicely. Adding a new podcast will ask you whether you would also like to download the five most recent episodes and receive notifications when new episodes arrive.

The options for playback are one of the major areas where the app falls down compared to competition like Pocket Casts. You can simply jump forward or back 30 seconds, but there is no ability to change playback speed, optimize volume or eliminate silences.

As I said yesterday, I’m happy to see Google get back into the podcasting space, as it is far too significant a category for them to not have a solution available by default on Android. I’m sure existing podcast app makers have to be somewhat concerned that this will cost them some purchases, but from the current state of things, it is going to be a while until Google’s solution is on par with any of the top contenders.

Have any of you seen podcasts make an appearance in Play Music yet? And since many of you said yesterday you wouldn’t be switching unless Google was offering comparable functionality to your current podcast app of choice, I’d love to hear what you use right now and what made you choose it.

Apple is world’s most valuable company again after Google tanks

Tim Cook is back on top. Photo: AppleGoogle is no longer the most valuable company in the world. Earlier this week the search-giant’s parent company Alphabet overthrew Apple as the world’s top company in terms of marketcap, but it appears that the company’s reign is already after its stock price began trading way down this morning. Alphabet shares are currently down 4.29%
