"Cardboard++" podría ser el nombre usado para la fusión de Cardboard y Project Tango

La realidad virtual es uno de los campos en los que muchas de las empresas tecnológicas están centrando sus esfuerzos últimamente. Sólo tenemos que recordar el último anuncio en el que se presentaba el precio de las Oculus VR y la posibilidad de precomprar ya las gafas antes de su salida al mercado

Ahora, la pregunta que nos hacemos es en qué estará trabajando exactamente Google. Parece que por algunas evidencias que están surcando últimamente las redes, podrían estar en el proceso de lo que han llamado “Cardboard++”, ¿qué será?

Cardboard++ llegaría de la unión entre las gafas de cartón ya existentes y Project Tango

Las evidencias de que Google, los creadores de las gafas de cartón Cardboard y Project Tango podrían estar trabajando en algo son muy palpables si investigamos un poco en la red. Por ejemplo, en el perfil de LinkedIn de Isaac Taylor, Manager general de la realidad aumentada y la realidad virtual en Google, si buscamos en la descripción de su trabajo encontraremos que ha comenzado desde hace un mes a trabajar con Project Tango y Cardboard ++.

Lo que podemos predecir todos aquellos que conocemos de qué va Project Tango y en qué se basa la Cardboard de Google, es que el nuevo proyecto, si es que de verdad están trabajando en él, podría ser una fusión de las dos tecnologías. Es decir, podría ser posible que el escaneo de superfícies, la visión artificial y la realidad virtual que nos ofrecen entre los dos dispositivos, puedan juntarse para crear algo espectacular.

Cabe decir que no es la primera vez que Google y Project Tango trabajan juntos, ya que por ejemplo en el Google I/O del año 2014 ya se encontraba Keyan Mobli allí para probar las gafas VR que Google estaba desarrollando. Puede que sea una coincidencia o no, pero después de haber estado un rato utilizándolas dijo: “Project Tango + VR, Cardboard ++”.

Clay Bavor, uno de los trabajadores de Google del reciente formado grupo de realidad virtual, anunció que ahora mismo hay unos 5 millones de unidades de Cardboard y más de 100 aplicaciones de este accesorio en Google Play.

Si de verdad los chicos de Mountain View y Project Tango están trabajando para crear esta Cardboard ++, podríamos estar ante un dispositivo de lo más interesante, como también comentan en 9to5google, incluso capaz de hacernos cambiar la forma de hacer las cosas. ¿Qué pensáis vosotros de todos estos rumores?

Google Safe Browsing will now warn you about deceptive ads and fake download buttons

Have you ever been to a site and noticed those ads that pretend to be your system, or the site itself? They could be asking you to update some plugin, or act as fake download buttons that are mixed in with a site’s real download button. Those types of attacks are called social engineering attacks, and Google aims to stop them.

Google’s Safe Browsing will now protect you from such ads with a warning that the page is using such tactics. This will put up such a warning on a lot of sites, which in the end is a good thing. Too many sites allow such dangerous ads to show up, and hopefully this will force them to ban such ads.

Latest Pebble update brings new functionality for messaging and health

While Android Wear and, to a lesser degree, Samsung’s Tizen OS, get the bulk of our attention in the smartwatch world, Pebble, the company that arguably kicked off the current consumer interest in smartwatches, continues to update its platform to stay relevant.

Pebble retains its big advantage in battery life thanks to its unique e-ink screen and, while both Android and Tizen retain the feature advantage over Pebble, it is slowly closing the gap in some critical areas.

This latest update focuses on messaging and Pebble Health, while also bringing new low battery warnings as well as updates to Watch-Only Mode that reduces the Pebble to simply a watch to prevent you from ending up with a blank screen on your wrist.

iOS users with Pebble devices are just now gaining some of the custom messaging capabilities that Android users already enjoyed, and Android users are now able to reply to incoming calls with an SMS. You can send a text, voice note or emoji response. The new Send Text app will even let you initiate SMS conversations from Pebble rather than simply responding.

Pebble Health is the other major focus for this update. A big part of that is the new API that will allow developers to bake Pebble Health stats into their apps and watchfaces. Look for these in the Pebble App Store soon. Developers can read about the nitty gritty details on the Pebble Developer page. Pebble Health is now tracking your activities more accurately, as well, and includes an option to view your distance in kilometers, although honestly who wants to do that. (Just kidding, virtually everyone not in the U.S.)

LG teases G5, confirms it’s coming Feb 21

LG is teasing the announcement of the LG G5 flagship both on its own site and Twitter. On its own site, you see the strange image above with no other details. The LG Twitter profile took a different approach, posting three photos of the number five.

The date lines up with LG’s press conference on February 21, right in time for the Mobile World Congress crowd. So we know the device will be unveiled there, but not much else. Unfortunately, we didn’t even get a sneak peek of the G5.

Rumor has it that the G5 will have dual cameras on the rear alongside a fingerprint reader. An early prototype in a dummy box was leaked with some interesting details, but of course nothing is confirmed. It’s only a few more weeks until we get to see the official announcement. HTC vuelve a sufrir pérdidas millonarias, y el One M10 no llegaría hasta abril

Malos tiempos corren para HTC. La firma taiwanesa a pesar de lanzar teléfonos interesantes como el HTC One A9, el cual ya analizamos en Andro4all, sigue sin ver luz al final del túnel. Pérdidas millonarias, cambios de CEO, despidos… un 2015 horrible en definitiva.

Pues bien, la cosa no pinta que vaya a mejorar para la marca, al menos durante el principio de este año 2016. Así que según leemos en Android Authority, HTC tendrá que esperar todavía un poco más para obtener resultados positivos en sus cuentas.

Echando la vista atrás, HTC registró una pérdida de 101 millones de dólares durante el último trimestre de 2015 –Q4–, o lo que es lo mismo, una pérdida de ingresos del 46% respecto al mismo periodo del 2014. Si bien hay que reconocer que la firma taiwanesa logro mejores resultados durante el Q4 de 2015 que durante el Q3 del mismo año, posiblemente por culpa del lanzamiento de su buque insignia, el HTC One A9, un teléfono que aunque logró mejorar las cifras de la empresa, no consiguió el empujón necesario y que todos los dirigentes de la marca deseaban.

El resumen de todo esto es que HTC perdió mucho dinero, y aunque Chialin Chang, CEO de la marca, quisiera maquillar estos resultados diciendo que HTC logró venderbastantes dispositivos durante el último periodo del 2015, la realidad es que se obtuvieron pocas ganancias con estas ventas.

Así pues, entre la cúpula de la empresa hay temor. Se sabe que el primer trimestre de 2016 va a ser de nuevo un lapso de tiempo de pérdidas millonarias, y que cualquier mejora de la firma sólo llegaría a partir del Q2 de 2016. En pocas palabras, el comienzo de año para HTC va a ser de nuevo nefasto, con muchas pérdidas y quien sabe si también conmalas noticias para sus empleados, y esto hará que su nuevo buque insignia, el HTC One M10, no se lanzará durante el mes de marzo.

No veremos el HTC One M10 durante el MWC

Así las cosas, aunque HTC ha confirmado su presencia para el MWC de Barcelona de este año, no veremos ningún teléfono de gama alta durante este evento. Sabemos que presentará el HTC 530, un gama baja para competir contra teléfonos como el Motorola Moto G además de otros modelos, pero nada que enamore a los usuarios de topes de gama.

Así que en definitiva, habrá que esperar hasta mínimo abril del 2016 para poder ver el One M10 y descubrir si este teléfono es el que sacará a HTC del ostracismo en el que vive desde hace tiempo. Cartuchos les quedan pocos… ¿Serán los nuevos Nexus sus verdaderos salvadores?
