Huawei bolsters its wearable lineup with Huawei Watch Elegant and Jewel

When we reviewed the Huawei Watch back in November we came away tremendously impressed. Even ignoring that this was its first smartwatch, Huawei produced one of the best Android wearables out there today.

Today they took the wraps off two new options at CES, but as the names suggest these represent new styles for the Huawei Watch rather than a serious revision to the hardware.

Both the Elegant and the Jewel share scratch-resistant, two-layer Sapphire crystal screens and 316L cold-forged stainless steel construction for the bodies.

The Elegant is rose-gold plated, whereas the Jewel has 68 Swarovski Zirconia ringing the face of the smartwatch.

The Elegant and the Jewel will be launching in the U.S. in Q1 and will cost $499 and $599 respectively.

Huawei looks to continue its momentum with the MediaPad M2 10

Huawei had a pretty good 2015. The Nexus 6P the company produced was a hit, and is still the best Android phone you can buy. Huawei isn’t stopping there though, as the company has just announced a tablet that builds on some of the same design philosophies of the Nexus 6P, the MediaPad M2 10.

The MediaPad M2 10 will come in two configurations, one in silver with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage, and one with 3GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. Both tablets will come with the same 10-inch 1920×1200 display, 2GHz Kirin 930 Octa-core processor, aluminum alloy body, 13 and 5-megapixel cameras, and Android 5.1. The 64GB model also comes with active stylus support, which will be included in a bundle.

No word on how the MediaPad M2 10 will be priced has been released, but it will be available in Q1 2016.

Huawei Watch Elegant and Jewel versions unveiled, ladies-only

Universally regarded as the best looking Android Wear smartwatch, the Huawei Watch was so far somewhat lacking in options for the ladies, even if Huawei press material suggested otherwise. Well, that’s no longer the case with two brand new versions just announced at the company’s CES 2016 keynote.

The Huawei Watch Jewel is all about Swarovski crystals (68 of them, 1.5mm each) lined around the watch’ bezel. The case itself is the rose gold plated stainless steel affair, already familiar from one of the men’s models, same 42mm size too.

If the Zirconia sparkle is not your thing, you can opt for the Watch Elegant model, which substitutes the stones for a fine dotted pattern. Both models get thinner leather straps to go better with gentler wrists and have customized feminine watch faces, and that’s about it.

The first wave of availability includes 27 countries with most of Europe covered, as well as the US, Canada, and Taiwan to name a few.

The Huawei Watch Elegant gets a list price of $499 in the States, and licensing Swarovski crystals means the Jewel commands a $100 premium. Expect those numbers to be higher and in Euro this side of the…

Fitbit Blaze is a rectangular smartwatch for the active folk

Over at CES, Fitbit has announced a proper smartwatch for fitness buffs, the Blaze. More than just an activity tracker, though, the Blaze wouldn’t be out of place in a less sweaty environments, or at least, that’s the idea.

The Fitbit Blaze features a color LCD touchscreen display (no diagonal specified) built into a quite larger case and a bold, sharp-edged one at that. The case, or more like the frame, is made of stainless steel while the straps are made of an elastomer material like that found on other sports watches. The Blaze will be available with a choice of Black, Blue or Plum wristbands, but you can also pick up leather straps in three different colors ($99.95) and a stainless steel bracelet ($129.95).

Fitbit Blaze with different colored bands

In terms of functionality, you’re getting heart rate monitoring, all-day activity and sleep tracking, on top of call and text notifications and other alerts, and music control. Connected GPS requires your phone to supply the positioning data for your workout stats.

MultiSport lets you select an activity like running or biking and give you the relevant data while SmartTrack will recognize exercises even if you’ve gone all old school and not told your wearable what you’re going to be doing.

Fitbit promises a 5-day battery life out of the Blaze (no capacity), with a charge time between an hour and two hours. Connectivity takes place over Bluetooth 4.0. The smartwatch is “sweat, rain and splash proof” (no rating), but not swim proof and the company advises against showering with it, stating skin care reasons. Hmm.

The Fitbit Blade is available for pre-order right now at a price of $199.95, a good $50 less than the Surge’s MSRP. It won’t ship until March, though.

Huawei becomes No. 3 smartphone manufacturer in the world in Q3 of 2015

Huawei has started its press event at CES today by boasting about its smartphone market share, among other things. The Chinese company has told us that its brand recognition has improved dramatically over the past few years, and the trend is for it to become even better in the future.

But that’s not all. Not only do more people know about Huawei now, but more and more people are buying its smartphones. According to the company, it’s been the world’s No.3 smartphone maker in the third quarter of 2015, with 9.7% market share.

That’s almost twice as much as the next contender has managed (which, surprisingly, is Oppo). Huawei’s aim is to one day be No.2, and it thinks it may actually achieve that in a few years. One thing is clear, though – the company is very much focused on…
