Deals, promotions and limited-time offers are pretty common, even from wireless carriers, but Verizon doesn’t have any plans to match all of them whenever a new one crops up, even when an offer like unlimited data from its biggest rival pops up on the scene.
In an interview with CNET, Verizon Wireless CFO Fran Shammo confirmed that the Big Red carrier doesn’t have any plans to bring back unlimited data in the foreseeable future. While Verizon is aware that AT&T has its own limited-time promotion to offer the almost extinct feature, it’s just not having any of it.
“At this point, we are not going to entertain unlimited.”
Recently, AT&T launched a promotion that sees U-verse and DirecTV subscribers have access to a special plan under AT&T’s umbrella with unlimited data. The plan doesn’t extend to any customers already using AT&T that aren’t U-verse or DirecTV subscribers, though, so the pool of potential candidates is already limited.
Verizon doesn’t want to react to a limited-time promotion, it seems, and indeed confirmed that it won’t launch its own promotions and deals just because another carrier launches one.
Last year Asus launched many different phones called ZenFone 2, and there’s no reason for us to expect anything else in 2016. We assume this time too there will be quite a few handsets going by the ZenFone 3 moniker, and so far the rumors had them launching in May or June.
Before that happens, Asus employees could be benchmarking two iterations of the ZenFone 3. Two different yet unofficial Asus smartphones, known just by their model numbers, have been put through the paces of GFXBench, yielding a list of the most important specs for each.
First off, the Asus Z010DD comes with a 5.9-inch 720p touchscreen, a 12 or 13 MP rear camera, a 5 MP selfie snapper, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 chipset (with a 1.5 GHz octa-core CPU), 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, and Android 6.0 on board.
Next up, the Asus Z012D has a 5.5-inch 1080p touchscreen, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 650 SoC (with a 1.7 GHz hexa-core CPU), and again 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, and Android 6.0 Marshmallow running things.
Obviously we can’t yet be sure that these are in fact going to be part of the ZenFone 3 line, but since that’s clearly going to be Asus’ most well-known series this year we see no reason for them to be called anything else.

Si de lo contrario te aparece una fecha de caducidad, no deberías preocuparte, pues tarde o temprano te llegará la notificación avisándote de que tu WhatsApp será gratuito para siempre.
Con esta medida, WhatsApp pretende mejorar la calidad de servicio convirtiendo su aplicación en un modelo 100% gratis y, como ya avisó su fundador, sin publicidad.
Naturalmente, la gente podría preguntarse cómo planeamos mantener WhatsApp sin cuotas de suscripción y si el anuncio de hoy significa que vamos a introducir anuncios y publicidad. La respuesta es no. A partir de este año, vamos a probar herramientas que permitan usar WhatsApp para comunicarse con las empresas y organizaciones. Por ejemplo comunicarse con tu banco si una transacción ha sido errónea, o con la aerolínea si el vuelo se ha retrasado. Queremos probar nuevas herramientas para hacer WhatsApp más fácil y potente, brindando al mismo tiempo una experiencia sin publicidad de terceros ni spam.
Esperamos que esta medida sea una de las primeras que WhatsApp tome para seguir mejorando poco a poco, y que añadan cada vez más y mejores características que puedan convencer a los usuarios que la habían abandonado en busca de otros servicios gratuitos y con más funcionalidades.

A couple of weeks ago we told you about an entirely new design that Google was testing for the weather information you can summon through Google Now on Android. And here’s some good news – the test is over, and the new design is now rolling out to every Android device out there.
While this seems to be a server-side update, having the latest version of the Google app for Android (5.8.50.19) does apparently help get it faster. So make sure you’re up to date. If so and you still don’t see the new design, just be patient for a little while longer – Google loves to stage such rollouts.
The new weather card is not only prettier than before, but it also packs much more information. You get hourly sky conditions and chance of rain, severe weather alerts, a more detailed ten-day forecast, air quality info, UV index, as well as sunrise and sunset times.
The app-like experience is packed into three self-describing tabs (between which you can swipe sideways) – Today, Tomorrow, and 10 days. The update also brings some new functionality. Namely, when you search for a new location after the weather card is already on the screen, you can save that city for later. If you do, it will show up inside the drop-down in search.
Finally, you should know that the background colors change according to the time of day and sky conditions, and Google calls the frog-like character that you can see in the app “a new meteorologically inclined friend”.

Xiaomi es de esas marcas en las que la imagen que se da de cara al público suele ser realmente positiva. Productos de calidad con un precio asequible que además apuestan por esa idea de sistemas abiertos que hacen que sea posible explotar las posibilidades del sistema operativo. Pero, para muchos, la última de las decisiones que se han tomado desde la empresa hace pensar que los aires de superioridad se le han subido a la cabeza de la empresa.
De hecho, son muchos los desarrolladores que han informado del bloqueo del bootloader en el sistema MIUI 7 en los dispositivos Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 y de su cabreo por la decisión tomada por Xiaomi. Hasta el momento, era posible instalar ROMs no oficiales que permitían a los usuarios más avanzados mejorar las funcionalidades y personalización de sus terminales móviles. Es más, había toda una serie de equipos trabajando en ellas que se llevaban los elogios del público. A partir de ahora, y si no hay vuelta atrás en la decisión, esto ya no será posible hacerlo.
Las razones detrás del bloqueo de Xiaomi
Como ya ha ocurrido en otras empresas (hay que recordar que la mayoría vende sus terminales con el bootloader bloqueado) la razón que justifica la decisión tomada por Xiaomi se justifica en la necesidad de poner a salvo los datos de los usuarios. Es cierto que en parte tienen razón, pero no lo es menos que hasta ahora, aún conociendo los riesgos que suponía tenerlo abierto, los consumidores habían apostado por Xiaomi. ¿Supondrá ello una pérdida de importancia en el mercado? Probablemente no porque para muchos usuarios estos temas de desarrollo le tocan de lejos, pero desde luego sí lo será de credibilidad para aquellos usuarios que habían apostado por ella por las múltiples posibilidades que les ofrecía para elegir ROMs propias y de terceros.
¿Qué puedes hacer y qué no tras el bloqueo del bootloader?
Pero quizás más allá de la noticia, y más allá de las grandes críticas que están haciendo algunos de los desarrolladores y usuarios que sacaban partido de esa funcionalidad lo que hay que considerar es cómo afecta a la mayoría de los que tienen un Xiaomi que funciona con MIUI 7 y a los que afectará este cambio de normativa. En tu caso debes saber que todas las ROMs oficiales que aparezcan desde la fecha de la toma de decisión podrás utilizarlas de manera habitual. Es decir, con ellas no vas a tener ningún problema añadido, ni se producen cambios importantes permitiéndote flashearlas.
Otra cosa es lo que ocurrirá con el bloqueo del bootloader con aquellas otras ROMs desarrolladas por independientes que no sean consideradas como oficiales por Xiaomi. En ese caso sí te quedarás sin la posibilidad de que todo fuese tan sencillo como hasta la fecha. Teniendo en cuenta que los que utilizan estas alternativas son una minoría, quizás Xiaomi ha pensado que está bien replegarse y que puede con las críticas de estos usuarios. Aunque esto sea claramente una estrategia comercial, creo que perjudica claramente a la propia empresa que había mantenido esta cualidad como diferencia respecto a los demás fabricantes.
