Samsung Exynos 8870 chip surfaces

According to unconfirmed information, Samsung is working on releasing an Exynos 8870 chipset, which is going to be less powerful than its top-of-the-line Exynos 8890. The Exynos 8870 will be made specifically for Samsung’s external clients like Meizu.

In fact, rumor has it the Meizu Pro 6 might use the chipset when it gets to market some time next year. Expected performance of the new chipset is along the lines of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820, so we’d imagine it’s not slow by any means.

Details on the architecture of the chipset are nonexistent at the moment. We suspect more information will become available as Samsung starts testing the Exynos 8870 and it pops up in some benchmarks’ database.

Meanwhile MyDrivers.com compiled a nice chart comparing the major flagship chipsets for the start of 2016. The graph shows the performance of the Samsung Exynos 8890, Qualcomm Snapdragon 820, Kirin 950, Helio X20 and Apple A9 as benchmarked by GFXBench for GPU performance and Geekbench 3 for CPU stress testing.

In the CPU performance chart, the Apple A9 chip is leading in single-core performance with 2546 points, followed by the Snapdragon 820. The Exynos 8890 and Helio X20 follow closely. In multicore testing, however, the picture is quite different and the Exynos 8890 leads, followed by the Helio X20 and Kirin 950.

As far as GPU performance is concerned, the Snapdragon 820’s Adreno 530 GPU leads, while the Exynos 8890’s Mali-T880 GPU is second. Apple’s A9 GPU is third, as the Helio X20 and Kirin 950 fail to deliver comparable performance.

Techno-skeptics’ objection growing louder

Techno-skeptics’ objection growing louder
Techno-skeptics, or whatever you want to call them — “humanists” may be the best term — sense that human needs are getting lost in the tech frenzy, that the priorities have been turned upside down. They sense that there’s too much focus on making sure that new innovations will be good for the machines.

Top Energy Issues For 2015-2016: Looking Back While Going Forward

The year 2015 will be remembered as much for its personalities as it has been for its issues. Indeed, Elon Musk and Don Blankenship dominated the energy news in spring and late fall, respectfully, for very different reasons. The former is seen as an innovator while the latter is viewed as a symbol of industrial America. He is also someone whom had ultimately been convicted of misdemeanor criminal charges, all stemming from a coal mining accident that killed 29 workers.

BlackBerry Priv camera gets praised by DxO Labs

The BlackBerry Priv stopped by DxO Labs for their usual DxOMark test routine and got flattering marks in the areas that count. Befitting its flagship status, the slider’s 18MP shooter ranks among the top ten mobile cameras the company has tested.

The Priv’s dynamic range was highly acclaimed, the camera dealing excellently with even the most difficult scenes. A minor complaint in this respect is that the automatic HDR mode renders images with a somewhat compressed tone curve.

The Priv also captures high levels of detail, in both good and low light, DxO notes. The reviewers go as far as to state that the smartphone “records some of the best low-light detail” among devices they’ve tested. Colors got their share of praise, with the precise wording being “strong and pleasant”, though white balance proved less consistent that you’d hope.

The BlackBerry Priv also doesn’t disappoint in terms of autofocus speed, DxO reports. The flash does well too, more so with an additional source of light, than left entirely on its own.

Video quality is yet another area where the Priv excels, with well-preserved detail, and overall dependable exposure. The optical stabilization system introduces some issues like frame shifts and distortions, but those are mostly visible in low light.

All things considered, the BlackBerry Priv posts a score of 82, which puts in on the same level as the iPhone 6s, and both of last year’s iPhones. Notable rivals like the Huawei Nexus 6P and Samsung Galaxy Note5, however, manage to score a few extra points compared to the Priv, though obviously a compound numerical score speaks little to define actual image properties.
