$99 Samsung Gear VR now available, ‘The Martian VR Experience’ preview out

Announced a couple of months ago, the consumer edition of the Samsung Gear VR headset has been up for pre-order in the US for a couple of weeks, and in Europe for the past few days too. Well, it’s started shipping in the States, and if you weren’t among the early birds, you should be able to order yours today on Amazon and BestBuy, though both retailers list the $99 device as out of stock.

Logistics are one thing, content is another. If for example you want to catch a glimpse of what it’s like being on Mars, you’d be able to do so thanks to Twentieth Century Fox. The film studio has released a preview of ‘The Martian VR Experience’ – a 360-degree look through the eyes of an astronaut on the Red Planet.

The sneak peek is available on Samsung’s Milk VR platform, and the full VR movie is due to be out next year, all 15 to 20 minutes of it. Produced by Ridley Scott and directed by Robert Stromberg, the reel was shot parallel to the old-school 2D motion picture The Martian, on the same sets and with the same actors, not that it was particularly crowded during the Mars…

Samsung Galaxy A9 spotted on GeekBench with Snapdragon 620

First mentioned in a trademark filing all the way back in March, the Samsung Galaxy A9 is about to materialize. Indication of that comes from a listing on GeekBench, where a Samsung SM-A9000 model has been put to the test.

Dated yesterday, the entry in the database now sees the Galaxy A9 appear with its genuine model number. Back in September another Samsung device was listed with identical specs but an unintelligible name, though it was already speculated then that it was indeed the A9. It later showed up on Antutu as well, sporting the same chipset.

So the Galaxy A9 will indeed feature a Snapdragon 620 SoC(MSM8976), its CPU having a dual quad-core big.LITTLE arrangement with a cluster of Cortex-A72 cores and another one with Cortex-A53’s. What’s new this time around, is that the chip is geared towards better single core performance (1,446 points versus 1,325 in September). The multi-core result, on the other hand, is some 300 points lower now.

With the Galaxy A3 (2016) and A5 (2016) now having passed FCC certification, and live units of those two plus the A7 (2016) out and about, we could be looking at an all new A-series lineup any time soon, save for the only even-numbered Galaxy…

Actualización de WhatsApp para Android: Vista previa de enlaces y mensajes favoritos

Nueva actualización para WhatsApp Android

Más novedades para el cliente de mensajería WhatsApp para Android. Si durante las últimas semanas han ido añadiendo características, una última actualización las agrupa absolutamente todas. Entre ellas, la posibilidad de marcar mensajes como favoritos y mandar enlaces con vista previa.

De hecho, en los últimos días ya actualizaron para iOS la opción de marcar mensajes como favorito. Algo que ahora también podemos disfrutar en Android, junto con varias mejoras más.

A través de Google Play ya podremos descargar o actualizar WhatsApp a su última versión para disfrutar de todas las novedades. De paso que actualizas la versión de WhatsApp puedes aprovechar para revisar los clientes de Facebook más ligeros para tu teléfono móvil.

Podremos elegir la opción de vista previa en los enlaces

Se podría decir que esto es similar a cuando compartimos una noticia en nuestros muros de Facebook. En cuanto enviemos un enlace por WhatsApp, podremos decidir si queremos o no incluir la vista previa. Se trata de mostrar la descripción del enlace junto con la imagen de la misma si es que tiene.

WhatsApp se suma así a sus competidores Telegram y Slack, que ya disponían anteriormente de esta funcionalidad.

Mensajes destacados

¿Te ha pasado alguna vez que has querido marcar como favorito un mensaje y no has podido? Pues igual que haces en Twitter, también podrás hacerlo en WhatsApp. Con una pulsación prolongada sobre el mensaje, podremos marcar el mensaje con una estrella. Posteriormente, acudiendo al menú y en “Mensajes destacados”, veremos todos aquellos que hemos almacenado.

Eliminar mensajes por días

Se acabó el eliminar todos los mensajes. Podremos ir eliminándolos por días acudiendo al menú, desde la opción de “Vaciar Chat”. Nos encontraremos con tres opciones para elegir, desde “Todos los mensajes”, a “Mensajes de más de 30 días” o “Mensajes de más de 6 meses”. Esta opción la podemos aplicar de forma individual por cada conversación o de forma grupal para todas.

La evolución de compartir

Igual que en Android Marshmallow, WhatsApp incluye la opción de compartir desde una aplicación de terceros. Pero ahora, en vez de mandarnos a la aplicación, nos ofrecerá una ventana en la que podremos elegir directamente a qué contacto queremos enviarle el archivo. Google ya empezó a repartir Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow a los primeros teléfonos Android One.

En definitiva, varias novedades para hacer más cómoda la aplicación más usada en cuanto a mensajería instantánea. ¿Cuál es tu actualización favorita de las que hemos mencionado anteriormente?

All the while, the Mayor’s office has dangled pricey carrots for tech companies to keep their headquarters in San Francisco, after the industry’s massive profits helped residents weather the recession with an envious unemployment rate of 4.8% and a 2% increase in wages.
One of the technology industry’s most significant transformations of modern life snuck up so slowly that it was hardly noticeable: the migration of jobs to big cities and the corresponding need to transform suburban neighborhoods into high-rise metropolises.
Indeed, a 26-year-old MIT economist recently turned heads with analysis showing that almost all income inequality growth over the last half-century can be blamed on the rising share of wages spent on housing (climbing an astounding 20% in 15 years, from 25% to 30% of income).

My Top 10 Redundant Or Misused Weather Terms

As I sit here getting ready for my Saturday ritual of watching college football, I am reflecting on the numerous serious weather and climate topics that I have written in Forbes over the past few months. As I take a couple of days off to enjoy my family at Thanksgiving, I thought it would be fun to write a lighter piece while maintaining consistency with my goal to increase weather, climate, and science literacy. Each week the NCAA college football committee ranks its Top 10 teams. I decided to rank my top 10 redundant or misused weather terms. Dr. John Nese of Penn State’s Meteorology Department referred to these as Weather Faux Pas on a recent episode of Weather Channel’s Weather Geeks.  A few of his make my top 10 list too. Here we go:

Google Fit adopta más características que nunca y resulta perfecta para wareables

Google Fit es otro servicio de Google que se encarga de tu salud y bienestar. Google Fit es una aplicación para Android 4.0 Jelly Bean o superior que coordina actividades físicas usando los sensores de un smartphone o smartwatch.

Google Fit fue anunciado en Junio de 2014 y ha medida que ha ido creciendo su popularidad ha ido integrando nuevas funciones, pero hasta el momento nunca ha llegado a la altura de otros servicios de salud & bienestar, como Runtastic, Nike Running, Strava, o Polar Beat.

Por esta razón, Google Fit se ha puesto las pilas y en su última actualización ha añadido más nuevas funciones que nunca, que hacen que sea de las mejores aplicaciones para combinar el deporte con Android.

Esta nueva actualización a parte de traer nuevas funcionalidades también da otro aire a la aplicación con nuevos gráficos y una interfaz más “limpia”. Por ejemplo, ahora la mayoría de deportes tienen su propio gráfico al estilo Material Design único de Google.

Google ha usado sus mejores armas para actualizar y elevar Google Fit al nivel de Runtastic y otros servicios más populares, y ** ha utilizado sus propios mapas** (Google Maps), para decirte la irregularidad del terreno de la actividad física que has realizado.

Al terminar una actividad te mostrará, mediante una gráfica, la altitud de tu recorrido. Para ello, tendremos que activar el GPS durante todo el transcurso de la actividad:

Nutrición con Google Fit

Google Fit no es solo una aplicación de coordinación de actividades deportivas. Como su nombre indica, Google Fit quiere que lleves la mejor vida saludable posible, mediante el deporte y una nutrición correcta y adecuada.

Este nueva función no está dentro de Google Fit, sino que Google Fit será la encargada de mostrarte “cartas” al estilo Google Now Cards con la información nutritiva llevada a cabo por otra aplicación, como por ejemplo, MyFitnessPal.

Invitaciones a grupos de Google Fit

¿Cuántos de vosotros vais a correr en grupo? ¿a cuántos de vosotros os gusta retar a vuestros amigos? sea cual sea vuestra razón, el deporte en grupo resulta más divertido. Aunque solo sea un rumor sacado de unas strings filtradas, es muy posible que Google Fit coordine grupos a los que podrás unirte y compartir o recibir información de actividades físicas de otras personas.

Google Fit aprovecha que vivimos en pleno apogeo de smartwatches u otros wareables para poder sacar aún más partido a su aplicación.

Por una parte, poseer un smartwatch con Google Fit instalado nos permite una mayor precisión en actividades como flexiones, abdominales, sentadillas y parecidos, ya que nuestro reloj detectará cada salto o movimiento con más exactitud, además de que no tendrás que cargar con tu smartphone al realizar la actividad.

Por otra parte, actividades como salir a correr, ir al gimnasio o incluso hacer surf son ejercicios que el uso de un wareable simplifica en gran medida. En consecuencia, con esta nueva actualización podremos realizar hasta un cierto grado lo mismo que si tuviéramos un smartphone delante.

¿Google Fit está a la altura?

En conclusión, Google Fit ha llegado a un punto en que ya se puede comparar con otras aplicaciones más veteranas. La implementación de “cartas” que se relacionan con otras aplicaciones siempre sin que nosotros lo pidamos es un punto fuerte que muchas aplicaciones no pueden disponer.

Asimismo, usar otros servicios de Google como sus mapas acaban de perfeccionar la aplicación, junto con el acabado de Material Design y los gráficos de Google.

Aún así, Google Fit apenas tiene año y medio y cada uno tiene su propia opinión. Así que, deportistas, no dudéis en dejar vuestra opinión a continuación.
