There’s a trend happening in video games, and I’m not sure if I like it. The first person shooter campaign, once arguably the most important single concept in the video game industry, is getting devalued. We’ve seen prominent games: Titanfall, Evolve, and now Star Wars: Battlefront release as multiplayer only, eschewing the entirety of the offline experience. We’ve seen Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 cut its campaign on Xbox 360 and PS3, an omission made for technical reasons but nonetheless reminding us of a shift in focus on the developer’s part, the idea that you can sell a game without a campaign and still have it be Call of Duty. And we’ve got a broad new slate of multiplayer-only games coming out over the next year, reminding us that this is something publishers and developer alike very much want to happen. for the most part, this is fine: more variety is no problem, over all, and we’ve got lots of great single-player game right now. But nowhere does this hurt more than with Star Wars: Battlefront.

Star Wars: Battlefront hasn’t exactly received the warmest of receptions out of all the AAA releases this holiday season. While most critics admit that it’s a beautiful game, concerns about depth both in gameplay and scope of content itself have been raised, a main point of contention being a $50 DLC pass for a $60 game that was already multiplayer only.

Recently, I’ve been spent my time in the post-apocalyptic nightmare of Fallout 4’s commonwealth. I also had an extensive sojourn into Rise of The Tomb Raider’s frozen siberia, a little time spent in the sci fi battlefields of Star Wars: Battlefront, a sortie into the dystopia of Call of Duty: Black Ops 3, and a brief moment in a zombie infested jazz age. It’s release season, and there’s a lot to play. But as I wrap up my time with some of those games and prepare for less crowded December, my mind wanders back, as it often does, to Destiny.

Massachusetts believes that meaningful consumer protections make more sense than prohibiting FanDuel, DraftKings, Yahoo and the like from providing their daily fantasy sports services. Massachusetts State Attorney General Maura Healey has delivered a set of proposed regulations, which would craft a legal landscape that allows for daily fantasy sports to survive.
