QNX: Over-the-air Updates Will Save Manufactures And Consumers Billions

When Tesla Model S owners woke up one morning last month to find their vehicle had learned to drive without them, the world finally began caring about over-the-air updates (OTA). But to Derek Kuhn, VP of sales for QNX–which powers OTA for GM–that’s old news. He’s been peddling the platform technology for nearly three years, and until now auto manufacturers weren’t interested, he said in an interview at the Connected Car Expo in Los Angeles, Calif. But now they’re ready..

‘Walker Assault’ Is Far And Away The Best Part Of ‘Star Wars: Battlefront’

When I played the Star Wars: Battlefront beta, I got excited. I didn’t quite expect to be, but DICE delivered some impressive gameplay in those three days. The team offered us three game modes — two that felt like little warmups for the main event, and one truly masterful display of Star Wars videogame wizardry: Walker Assault, an epic 20 v 20 fight that managed to capture the grandeur of Star Wars inside of a competitive shooter. After that, launch day couldn’t come soon enough. What else, I wondered, was DICE going to bring to the table for the full game?

Pushbullet announces paid Pro tier which incorporates some previously free features

Pushbullet started out as a very nifty service that mirrored your phone’s notifications on your computer, but it’s added a lot more features in the meantime. You can now act on those notifications from your computer, send text messages from it through the apps on your mobile device, and much more – there’s even “universal copy and paste”, for example.

And while all of this functionality has so far been free, the time has come for the company behind the service to announce how exactly it plans to make money. Turns out the answer is pretty simple: through a paid tier.

Hence, Pushbullet Pro was born. This paid subscription goes into effect on December 1. It costs $4.99 per month, or $39.99 per year. The bad news is that come December 1 certain features which have so far been free will only be available if you pay.

You won’t be able to act on your notifications if you stay with the free tier, for example. Nor will you have access to Universal copy & paste. Sending messages from your computer (but using the apps on your phone) will be capped to 100 per month, while the files you send using Pushbullet will have to be 25MB or smaller, and the storage space you get will be 2GB.

On the other hand, if you subscribe to Pushbullet Pro you can send files up to 1GB in size, and you get 100GB of storage as well as unlimited message sending, and priority support.

The company obviously could have chosen to show you ads and keep the entire service free, but it says it doesn’t want “to hurt the Pushbullet experience with ads” or betray your trust “by selling your data”. If you’re interested in upgrading to Pro, you can already do that…

Next 4-inch iPhone to be based on the 5s, new rumor claims

Ever since Apple decided to join its competitors in selling devices larger than 4 inches, we’ve heard countless rumors saying that the Cupertino company hasn’t totally given up on the smaller form-factor. New 4-inch iPhones have been “imminent” quite a few times already, but none of those things actually managed to pan out.

Today we’re already at the second rumor about the next small Apple smartphone. A few hours ago we heard that an iPhone 6c was on track for release in 2016, but now a new report seems to contradict that.

First off, it says that there will be a new 4″ iPhone, yes, but it will be based on the iPhone 5s (pictured above) and not the 5c. The design of this new device should thus be extremely close to that of the iPhone 5s, while featuring some updated internals.

We can allegedly expect to see the A8 chipset in there, along with an improved FaceTime HD camera with f/2.2 aperture, and support for both 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.1. Those are all the hardware details we have for now, but one thing that will be missing will be 3D Touch, which will remain exclusive to the bigger iPhones.

It is claimed that this smaller product is ready for production and can be launched very soon if Apple doesn’t change its mind about it in the meantime. If certain past rumors are true, then this upgraded iPhone 5s should see the light of day in the first half of 2016.

Google Photos will now let you easily free up space on your device when you need it

One of the strengths of Google Photos is the ability to access unlimited cloud storage for “high quality” photos, and videos as well. Unfortunately, devices don’t have unlimited storage, so Google is hoping to make it easier to free up some space on devices that might be running low.

With the new “Free Up Space” feature, which is available in Settings within the app, users can simply tap the option to have Google Photos excise some images and videos from the built-in storage on their device. These photos and videos will have already been backed up to Google Photos, of course, and the cloud service says that you’ll be able to access them, both on device and on the web, whenever you’re connected.

The update to Google Photos, which should be available now, also includes the ability to have Photos tell you when your device is running low on storage and then automatically delete photos and videos that are 30 days or older and have already been backed up to the cloud.

The update rolled out to Android users beginning earlier today, and it will be available to iOS user at some point in the near future as well.

Do you think you’ll use this feature a lot?

Unprecedented November Tornado Outbreak or Not?-Some Expert Perspective

Possibly 40 tornadoes roared through parts of the United States Plains on the evening of November 16 and into the morning of November 17th. Accuweather’s website has some impressive video footage of a massive tornado near Pampa, Texas. As I monitored social media, I saw a few nom-meteorologist friends remarking about how strange this seemed. “It’s not tornado season” seemed to be the thinking. Tim Marshall, a meteorologist, storm chaser and engineer with Haag Engineering Company, says:

The same conditions that produce the spring severe weather season also reappear in the fall (although it is to a lesser degree). It’s the never ending ebb and flow of the seasons.

Dr. Harold Brooks of NOAA’s National Severe Storms Laboratory captures it perfectly:

Tornadoes can happen any time of year. It looks like the November 16th outbreak is the biggest outbreak of significant tornadoes in November on record this far west.

Dr. Brooks’, one of the foremost tornado experts in the world, preliminary assessment affirms at least two things. It isn’t necessarily weird to have tornadoes in November, but this was a rare outbreak in some ways. James Ladue, Senior Instructor at the Warning Decision Training Division of the National Weather Service, echoed some of Brooks initial thinking. He provided me with multi-radar/multi-sensor rotation tracks for the strongest portion of the outbreak. He told me in a message:

I think this outbreak is unprecedented for so far west, so late in the fall. But the model forecasts were spectacular, and that helped the NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center do a fantastic forecast for an enhanced outlook 2-3 days ahead of yesterday.
