Google launches YouTube Music with 14-day free trial

YouTube has been busy when it comes to new features, with YouTube Red bringing ad-free and other noteworthy features to the service for a minimal monthly subscription. Now the focus is on music, as Google aims to offer a “new type of experience” when you want to listen to, or watch, your favorite artist or track.

On November 12, Google officially launched YouTube Music for Android (and iOS) users in a standalone app. The company isn’t shy about saying that starting a song in YouTube Music will take you down the rabbit hole of videos and music, and uses it as a selling point of the new service. The company also says that discovering music will be easier than ever, as the new Home tab will populate recommended tracks and artists, and even put together personalized stations based on your listening habits.

While YouTube Music will have access to a vast catalog of official songs, albums and videos, Google also promotes the fact that there are a variety of videos in its collection, including lyric videos, concert footage and even covers and remixes. All of this content will be available through YouTube Music, easily accessible when the user wants.

To get the best experience, though, Google suggests upgrading to YouTube Red for $9.99 per month, which will net the user offline playback, along with the ability to seamlessly switch between a music video and just the music’s audio if the situation calls for it. With YouTube Red activated, you’ll also be able to keep listening even when you start using another app or your screen turns off.

Advanced Micro Devices’s Head Of Radeon Technologies Group, Raja Koduri, Talks About Their Future

Aquaris X5 ¿Con o sin CyanogenMod OS?

Tal y como habíamos anunciado unos días antes, la firma española número uno de fabricación de smartphones y Movistar se han unido para crear su nuevo terminal: el bq Aquaris X5. Este no es un terminal “parecido” al resto de bq’s; Aquaris X5 es de los pocos móviles con CyanogenMod integrado.

CyanogenMod es una versión del sistema operativo Android caracterizada por expandir los límites de la personalización al máximo. CyanogenMod ya ha estado presente en terminales de renombre, como el OnePlus One o el ZUK Z1. Este Aquaris X5 pero se puede encontrar con o sin CyanogenMod. Esto nos lleva a plantearnos; ¿Es mejor el X5 con o sin CyanogenMod?

Es mejor el X5 con Cyanogenmod?

Para empezar decantarnos por un terminal o otro, primero le echaremos un ojo a las características de ambos. El Aquaris X5 con CyanogenMod y el X5 con Android “puro” solo se diferencian es 3 “pequeños” detalles:

En todo el resto de características, ambos dispositivos son idénticamente iguales. La versión con CM no tiene Dolby (aunque podría) porque el propio CyanogenMod OS viene incorporado con un ecualizador de audio propio: AudioFX. La RAM es algo que bq puede cambiar en cualquier momento, ya que en el resto de sus terminales en sus especificaciones a veces pone 2 GB de RAM y luego tienes 1 GB.

La única explicación razonable a que el terminal con CM está disponible solo con 2 GB de RAM es quizá que la manera de tratar esta memoria de CyanogenMod es mejor que la de Android en sí, o que CyanogenMod trabaja mejor con 2 GB de RAM que con 3. A saber. De todas formas, no hay una gran diferencia apreciable entre un terminal con 3 que con 2 GB. Todo el resto de características, la cámara, la pantalla, procesador o la batería son la misma.

Por consiguiente, a la hora de comparar estos dos móviles nos fijamos básicamente en su interfaz, y no su hardware, ya que prácticamente es el mismo. CyanogenMod ha demostrado ser quizá el mejor sistema operativo basado en Android, ya sea porque tiene miles de desarrolladores y es totalmente gratis, así que tener CM instalado te abre todo un abanico de posibilidades de personalización.

Ejemplos de ello son la posibilidad de centrar el reloj, cambiar el icono de la batería, tener fondos de pantalla distintos para la pantalla de bloqueo y el launcher, pasar de canción con los botones de volumen o establecer tus propios atajos a aplicaciones. CyanogenMod en definitiva expande Android a un siguiente nivel, ofreciendo características que no están presentes en Android en sí.

Por otra parte, la mayoría de usuarios no necesitan este “siguiente nivel” de personalización y expansión de Android. Es más, con una versión de Android “puro” se sentirían más cómodos con el Android de serie. CyanogenMod por otra parte está empezando a desarrollarse como SO de serie en dispositivos, es decir, hasta hace poco simplemente era un firmware libre en el que podrías formar parte e incluso aportar tu propio trabajo sin ninguna recompensa.

Es por eso que a lo mejor CyanogenMod OS carece de experiencia, además del mal sabor de boca que dejó con la ruptura con la compañía OnePlus.

Qué condiciona escoger CyanogenMod Os o no?

En resumidas cuentas, lo que pesará más a escoger un sistema u otro será cuánto nos importa a nosotros el apartado de la personalización, que nivel de experiencia tenemos con Android (en el caso que sea nuestro primer Android escogeremos la versión con Android “puro”) y si utilizaremos al máximo esos 3 GB de RAM frente a los 2 GB de CyanogenMod.

Aún así, ambos terminales son muy de las mejores opciones de la gama media-alta que tienen de las mejores relaciones calidad/precio. Las dos versiones se encuentran disponibles hasta el momento en España por 229 euros. Puedes consultar toda su información en su web oficial.

Apple iPad Pro gets its first batch of reviews

The Apple iPad Pro is now on sale and the first batch of reviews are already in. Our colleagues have shared their thoughts on the 12.9″ tablet and, naturally, have compared it how it competes with modern laptops.

The iPad Pro starts at $799 for the 32GB option, but if you want more storage as well as the Apple Pencil and Smart Keyboard, you’re looking at a nudge over $1200.

Over at ArsTechnica, Andrew Cunningham summarizes the iPad Pro experience like so:

Even with a bigger screen and new accessories, the iPad still feels like a “sometimes computer.” I can take it with me on vacation instead of a MacBook and do pretty much everything I want, and I can even get quite a bit of work done on one (the majority of this review was written on an iPad Pro, usually while also chatting in Slack or Messages or firing off e-mails). But what really does it in for me are the many small ways in which the iPad Pro is not quite a traditional computer and iOS is not quite OS X.

Walt Mossberg from TheVerge isn’t quite happy with Apple’s Smart Keyboard for the iPad Pro, but confirms it’s killer for graphics use, especially with the Apple Pencil:

But, for me a person already using his laptop a lot less in favor of the iPad the Pro is just not likely to eliminate my laptop use entirely. And I say that knowing that, for instance, there will be better keyboard covers and cases. There already is one: I prefer the the Logitech Create I used to write part of this column. But it still doesn’t work nearly as well in my lap as a MacBook Air, partly because, like Apple’s keyboard, it only has one angle.
But, even if the iPad Pro doesn’t fully replace a laptop, it does have a killer app: graphics, in all its forms, when used with the optional $99 Apple Pencil.

Daring Fireball’s Jon Gruber concedes with Mossberg that the iPad Pro is suitable for graphics professionals:

The iPad Pro is “pro” in the way MacBook Pros are. Genuine professionals with a professional need visual artists in particular are going to line up for them. But it’s also a perfectly reasonable choice for casual iPad users who just want a bigger display, louder (and now stereo) speakers, and faster performance.

Overall, reviewers agree that the iPad Pro has an amazing display, a great battery life and the Apple A9x chipset is devilishly fast, but it inexplicably lacks 3D Touch and it’s way too expensive for a casual user to pick for couch entertainment.

Apple however have done a great job with the stylus, especially for their first attempt and direct comparison to the Surface 4 stylus are well in its favor.
