While most people pay close attention to the plot and characters when they’re watching a tv show, I have to admit to always having half an eye on what computers, cameras and audio gear are featuring in the background of said tv show. I am always on the lookout for great product placement and, sure enough, while watching Season Two of the most excellent House of Cards, starring Kevin Spacey, I noticed what I thought could be a Ruark R4 Mk2 Integrated Music System (IMS) lurking on the side table of Frank and Claire Underwood’s bedroom.

You can find Catherine Lewis working late nights at her sewing studio, putting the finishing touches on Batman. Leatherwork is her specialty, and this is a costume that calls for plenty of it. Even the leather bat mask is hand cut, dyed, and shaped. Rather than crafting costumes like this one solely for herself to wear, Lewis makes cosplay on commission.
As a seamstress and a business owner, Lewis, 31, specializes in bespoke. It’s simply that she applies her exacting tailor’s eye not to business suits, but to super suits. At God Save The Queen Fashions, Lewis prides herself on taking science fiction and fantasy garb very seriously.
“These are not your standard Halloween costumes,” she told me in an interview. Prices, which can run into the high four figures, reflect the quality of her work. “They’re completely custom-made sets of clothing made to look good, even up close.”
