Samsung Galaxy S7 could be launching in January

According to a new report out of Samsung’s home country of South Korea, the Galaxy S7 will be unveiled in January. Since the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge made their debut on March 1 this year, that means the S7 is going to be announced at least one full month early. This apparently has to do with the competition that Samsung is feeling in the high-end space, especially from Apple and its new iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus.

The rumor goes on to say there will be a premium and a sub-premium version of the Galaxy S7, and that the designs have been finalized already in September. The premium model’s Exynos chipset will reportedly house the processor and the modem on a single chip, while in the sub-premium handset they will be on different dies. The former SoC might be the Exynos M1 we’ve seen benchmarked recently, but that’s not 100% certain – especially as past mumblings had it ready for production only in the second half of next year.

Other previously leaked information talked about there actually being three different chipset variations employed by the Galaxy S7. The phone might also come with 3D Touch-like features, as well as a USB Type-C port.

Oppo R7s now official with 5.5-inch display, 13MP camera, 4GB of RAM and more

Oppo has quite a few devices in its library at this point, and now it is adding another with the R7s, which it has just recently made official.

Oppo’s R7s has plenty of stand-out features, including a 5.5-inch “arc edge” display, which features a 2.5D “arc edge screen” and 1080p HD resolution. That display is flanked by a bezel that measures in at only 2.2mm, for those that hate bezels. Inside, there’s 4GB of RAM, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 quad-core processor, and 32GB of built-in storage. The R7s also supports microSD cards for expandable storage. There’s a 13-megapixel camera on the back of the phone, with an 8MP front-facing camera on the other side.

For its part, Oppo says that the new ColorOS 2.1 user interface has some of its own improvements, including apps that open faster (311ms), “252 optimized scenes,” and a boot speed that the manufacturer says is 30% faster. The software also includes automatic icon sorting with just a quick shake of the device, and an “efficient memory cleaner.” It’s running Android 5.1 out of the box.

The device supports 4G and two SIM cards. The battery is measured in at 3070mAh and is non-removable.

Unfortunately, there’s no word on when the device will launch, how much it will cost, or where it will be available. But considering that it’s official now, it might not be too long of a wait to find out.

What do you think of Oppo’s R7s?

Nexus 5X fingerprint scanner even faster than the iPhone’s

Nexus 5X is insanely fast at reading your prints. Photo: SuperSaf TVFingerprint scanners on Android devices have been hit-or-miss (mostly miss) in recent years, but they’re getting a whole lot better. There’s no better example of that than the new Nexus 5X, which is even faster at recognizing your print than the new Touch ID sensor in iPhone 6s. I’m an iPhone 6s owner, and I’m
