Upcoming OnePlus Mini has all of its specs detailed

Before the end of the year, OnePlus will unveil a new, even more affordable device. This has so far been confirmed many times by the Chinese company’s management. Yet understandably OnePlus execs haven’t disclosed any information about the upcoming device’s specs.

That said, today a new rumor comes to seemingly reveal all of that. Before we delve into it, however, do note that all of this comes from an anonymous source, and as such you shouldn’t take any of it for granted. Furthermore, the source itself claims that these details are from a prototype that’s already two months old, which means that certain hardware specs may have changed in the meantime.

The phone could be called OnePlus Mini, since it will have a 5-inch touchscreen (with 1080p resolution and 2.5D Gorilla Glass on top). It will be powered by MediaTek’s Helio X10 chipset (MT6795T), which comes with a 2.2 GHz octa-core Cortex-A53 CPU.

2GB of RAM and 32GB of expandable eMMC 5.0 storage are in, but you can forget the previously talked about dual-camera setup. On the back we’ll see a 13 MP unit with a Sony IMX258 sensor with f/2.0 aperture, complemented by a dual-tone LED flash. The selfie shooter will have 5 MP resolution and will be of the wide-angle variety in order to fit as many people into your “groufies” as necessary.

The battery capacity is said to be 3,000 or 3,100 mAh, which you’ll charge through a USB Type-C port. Interestingly, some sort of quick charging support will be baked in, unlike in the more premium OnePlus 2. It’s the same situation with NFC and an IR blaster, both of which will be integrated into the OnePlus Mini despite not having made it to the bigger device.

A fingerprint sensor will be on the back of the OnePlus Mini, and the handset will also have a 1.2W front-facing speaker, an FM radio, and IP67 rating for water and dust resistance. Its shell will be plastic.

For all of this you’ll only need to pay around $250, if the source of this rumor has it right. The OnePlus Mini should become available in November or December, though it’s unclear if invites will be required for buying…

Turtle, el nuevo cristal protector que promete pantallas irrompibles

Las pantallas fracturadas de miles de smartphones, smartwatches, tablets y portátiles podrían convertirse pronto en cosa del pasado. Gracias a Samsung, que está trabajando para desarrollar un cristal especial de gran dureza capaz de soportar todo tipo de vejaciones y abusos, pronto podríamos olvidarnos de esos mini- ataques al corazón que sufrimos cada vez que se nos escapa de la mano nuestro terminal y acaba en el suelo.

El cristal protector, conocido como Turtle, ha aparecido en la red social china Weibo recientemente. Por el momento poco se sabe acerca de este material, sin embargo gracias a nuestros compañeros de Techradar hemos podido conocer algún dato. Existen rumores que apuntan a que este nuevo compuesto de cristal es flexible, lo que lo haría un gran candidato para uno de los próximos proyectos que prepara Samsung conocido como Project Valley.

Puesto que Samsung produce componentes para otras compañías – además de competir con compañías como Apple en el campo de los smartphones y los portátiles, Samsung también produce microprocesadores, memorias y pantallas para los iPhones y Macs -, en un futuro no muy lejano, Turtle podría ser implementado en productos que no sean de la empresa sur-coreana.

Vienen curvas

Sabemos que Samsung ha estado experimentando con pantallas plegables, y aunque ningún terminal de la compañía haya implementado esta característica por el momento, sí que tenemos ejemplos de dispositivos como el Samsung Galaxy Edge, el Galaxy S6 Edge+ o el Galaxy Round con pantalla curvada.

Turtle puede aportar un gran valor a las futuras pantallas plegables de Samsung otorgando una robustez y protección comparables al popular Gorilla Glass que todos conocemos, pero añadiendo elasticidad a la ecuación.

Para nosotros los consumidores, esto significa que nuestros dispositivos serán menos propensos al deterioro físico y podrán adoptar diseños menos convencionales. Por poner un ejemplo, si el objetivo de Samsung acaba cumpliéndose, en unos años podríamos disfrutar de una tablet que se pliega sobre sí misma hasta alcanzar el tamaño de un smartphone y todo con la misma protección, o mejor, que podría otorgar Gorilla Glass.

Atractivos para el consumidor

Turtle no sólo abriría las puertas a un universo de innovación en cuanto a formas y diseños, sino que la dureza que proporcionaría el supuesto cristal protector ahorraría una gran cantidad de dinero al consumidor medio. Según un estudio en Bankrate, sólo la población estadounidense se gasta una media de 23 mil millones de dólares al año en el reemplazamiento de cristales fracturados en sus terminales.

Esto presenta una enorme oportunidad para Samsung, ya que ahora, además de sus productos, podría convencer a los consumidores a comprar también sus componentes. Clientes que prefieran invertir y no gastarse su dinero en un futuro reemplazo de pantalla pueden optar directamente por comprar productos que vayan acompañados por la certificación Turtle.

Incidentes que involucran pantallas destrozadas han llevado a compañías como HTC o Motorola, rivales de Samsung, a ofrecer sustituciones de pantalla gratis o por un precio muy bajo en el caso de daños accidentales. Aunque hay empresas como Apple que cobran hasta 149 dólares por reemplazar la pantalla de uno de sus terminales, existen programas de garantías como el de HTC, llamado Uh-Oh en los Estados Unidos, que ofrece una sustitución gratis en el caso de daños accidentales a sus terminales.

Conclusión

Pienso que este proyecto de Samsung, aunque prometedor, todavía está a mucho tiempo de ser implementado en smartphones para su venta al público por varias razones. Una razón muy importante es la rentabilidad. En primer lugar Samsung tendría que encontrar rentable vender terminales con este cristal super-resistente, y eso requiere invertir mucho dinero en I+D (investigación más desarrollo), cuando realmente existen alternativas que pueden resultar mucho más baratas.

En segundo lugar, para lograr un cambio significativo respecto a los cristales protectores de hoy en día, Turtle tendría que sobresalir en muchos aspectos, cosa que puede resultar complicada. A pesar de ésto me encanta ver innovación de este tipo en lo que a smartphones y otros dispositivos respecta.

On top of that, it’s also flat, has a nice tie attached to it for rolling it up, and features anti-flammable materials. Unfortunately, it’s only available in red, but you can get it in 100cm and 150cm lengths, in case you need a cable that’s a bit longer. FanDuel And DraftKings Have Some Explaining To Do

Earlier today, FanDuel and DraftKings, staunch rivals in the realm of daily fantasy sports, published separate reports on their respective websites that join the two together in apology explanation.  FanDuel’s statement begins by noting that “there has been recent attention on industry employees playing on FanDuel and DraftKings.”  Thereafter, each company said the following:

Nothing is more important to DraftKings and FanDuel than the integrity of the games we offer to our customers. Both companies have strong policies in place to ensure that employees do not misuse any information at their disposal and strictly limit access to company data to only those employees who require it to do their jobs. Employees with access to this data are rigorously monitored by internal fraud control teams, and we have no evidence that anyone has misused it.

Jack Dorsey’s Plan To Fix Twitter: Product Focus But Few Details

No surprise to Silicon Valley, Twitter cofounder and Square CEO Dorsey is back as Twitter’s official CEO, a role he had held for about a year from 2007 to 2008.

On a conference call on Monday announcing his appointment, as everyone expected, Dorsey made it clear that Twitter’s product roadmap sits at the core of his plans. The CEO offered few specifics and didn’t announce any new product features. However, he offered some insight into his strategy as one based on the notion that if a product is evolving and working well, everything else, from user growth, to internal morale and talent, will fall into place.
