Micron’s Q4’15 Earnings Review: Industry Dynamics To Improve In Fiscal 2016

Leading memory chip manufacturer, Micron Technology lost almost 35% of its market value since it reported its Q3 2015 earnings on June 25th. The stock rose marginally in after hours trading yesterday as Micron’s Q4 2015 earnings (reported on October 1st) came in within its guided range and beat Wall Street estimates. Weak macroeconomic conditions and the persisting weakness in PC demand, coupled with Micron’s lagging DRAM and NAND output (or “bit growth”) in comparison to the industry (due to the ongoing technology transitions), has impacted the company’s growth rate in the last few months. While its Q4 2015 earnings were impacted by the continued weakness in the PC sector, Micron believes that the memory industry fundamentals remain favorable over the long term. Depending on how the end market demand plays out, the company will continue to manage product mix and allocate its capacity to maximize its opportunities over time. Micron seems confident that the demand environment will stabilize and improve next year, and expects industry supply and demand for both DRAM and NAND to be relatively balanced in 2016.

Radical.FM’s New Feature Allows You To Become A DJ For The World

While many streaming music platforms allow you to choose whatever you want to listen to, there aren’t a lot that focus on the ability to broadcast your choices to the world. Sure, playlists can be shared on outlets like 8tracks and your friends can see what you’ve been listening to on Spotify, but it’s not the same as actually hearing from somebody about the music playing in the moment. Human curation has become a hot topic in streaming, and the logical next step is for conversation to pop up about a favorite track or a newly-discovered gem.

Yelp Is Worth $30 Per Share

Yelp’s stock has fallen out of favor with the investors and the price has declined by over 50% in the past six months. As a result, the stock has also under-performed the broader markets. The company operates in geographies gives it access to over 76 million local businesses. As the company expands into new regions, its margins and monetization rate will be negatively impacted. Nevertheless, it still remains a dominant player in the $130 billion local ads business market, and should continue to rule the roost in the coming years. However, competition from Facebook and Google is intensifying, which is hurting Yelp’s growth potential. In this note, we explore factors impacting Yelp’s valuation.

Android TV adds SHOWTIME, HBO Now, CBS All Access and more

While the Chromecast gets a lot of the attention for its low price, Android TV has grown considerably since launch and continues to add apps and compelling hardware at an impressive rate.

As we mentioned with the NVIDIA SHIELD update earlier this week, the number of Android TV apps has risen to over 1,000 now, although reminiscent of the Android tablet app dilemma there are only a bit over 50 in Google’s curated list. Some notable new additions include Showtime, HBO Now, CBS All Access, Disney Movies Anywhere, Epix, WWE and UFC.

New Android TV manufacturers continue to come on board as well, with Hisense and TCL representing some of the more recent smart TV makers to offer Android TV. Additionally set-top boxes with Android TV from Pace, Sagemcom, and Technicolor are coming as part of partnerships with KDDI and Telecom Italia, which will allow seamless integration of Android TV with standard TV service.

While I’m excited to see Android TV continue to grow there are still issues that need to be worked out. Chief among them is that I will frequently find apps that aren’t compatible with my specific Android TV. HBO Now and Disney Movies Anywhere for example can’t be installed on NVIDIA SHIELD. There’s enough frustration amongst users regarding streaming services being limited to those that have a specific cable or internet provider without heaping on seemingly random device omissions.

It is still early days for Android TV and again, there have been tremendous strides since launch, but the competition to be the brains behind the streaming media in the home is fierce, so they need to keep moving fast if they are going to keep up.

Motorola announces which of its devices will get Android 6.0 updates

Since Android 6.0 Marshmallow will officially make its debut next week when it will land on Google’s Nexus line of devices, Motorola thought it fitting to publish a blog post outlining its plans regarding Marshmallow updates. It’s unfortunate that in this day and age very few smartphone makers are so upfront about their update strategies.

As you’d expect, Motorola has published a list of its devices that are going to get updates to Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Yet you might not have expected the list to be this short, or for certain handsets to be missing from it.

Let’s start with the good news then. The following devices will see the newest version of Android:

• 2015 Moto X Pure Edition (3rd gen)

• 2015 Moto X Style (3rd gen)

• 2015 Moto X Play

• 2015 Moto G (3rd gen)

• 2014 Moto X Pure Edition in the US (2nd gen)

• 2014 Moto X in Latin America, Europe and Asia2 (2nd gen)

• 2014 Moto G and Moto G with 4G LTE (2nd gen)

• DROID Turbo

• 2014 Moto MAXX

• 2014 Moto Turbo

Add to all of these the Motorola-made Nexus 6, which however will get its update straight from Google (as is customary in the Nexus program). You may have noticed that neither generation of the affordable Moto E has been included, nor the first-gen Moto G and Moto X. And while these two may be considered too old to update at this point, the second-gen Moto E is only a few months old.

An actual release timeline for the updates for the devices that are getting them hasn’t been outed yet, but Motorola says information on timing should become available “in the coming weeks”.

Moving on, the company has also announced that it’s going to stop developing some of its apps and services that have functionality that’s now either built into Android itself, is very similar to Android features, or for which there are many third party alternatives.

Hence, Moto Assist will be gone in Android 6.0 Marshmallow, along with Motorola Migrate, and the Google Chrome extension found in Motorola Connect. The focus here is apparently on keeping things simple and bloatware to a minimum, and we assume most people would agree with this…
