The new Apple TV has a Bluetooth remote with touch and Siri

At its event today Apple didn’t only introduce new phones and tablets. The new Apple TV made its debut as well.

The new set top box comes with an innovative remote that has a glass touch surface on the top, which lets you glide across lists, hopefully making the task of navigating the interface easier than it’s been before. Touch interaction is also employed when you want to skip ahead in a movie or TV show you’re watching.

The remote comes with Siri built-in too, and you can talk to her and ask her things with a dedicated button. If you’re looking for something to watch, Siri searches through iTunes, Netflix, Hulu, HBO, and Showtime. You’re also able to ask Siri stuff while you’re watching something, including things related to the content you’re seeing such as “Who stars in this?”. In these cases, Siri will answer in the lower part of the TV interface, so as not to disturb your viewing. Commands like “Siri, skip ahead 5 minutes” work too.

Apple Music is now a feature in Apple TV, and there’s an app store for access to even more stuff. You have access to your photos, and new high-res video screensavers are included.

Games are a big part of the new Apple TV platform, and the new remote acts as a gamepad when needed. Expect to see Apple TV versions of a lot of popular iOS games soon, as well as some exclusive titles. For some reason, you’ll be able to do shopping on your Apple TV if you want to, with big images of clothes, for example, showing up on your TV. Upcoming apps will be responsible for this.

The new Apple TV has a 64-bit A8 chip. The remote works via Bluetooth 4.0 and has an accelerometer, a gyro, three-month battery life with normal use, and the Lightning port for charging.

For the 32GB version of the set top box you’ll have to pay $149, while the 64GB model will retail for $199. They will both be out in late October in over 80 countries, with 100 countries getting the new Apple TV by the end of the year. Interestingly, the existing Apple TV will still be sold for $69. Developers will get their hands on the new version of tvOS today, so they can start working on those…

Apple iPhone 6s Plus is now official with 12MP OIS camera

Today Apple announced the next generation iPhones – the 4.7″ iPhone 6s and the 5.5″ iPhone 6s Plus. The bigger iPhone 6s Plus utilizes an improved Aluminum 7000 series unibody shell, and brings a few novelties on its specs sheet.

The iPhone 6s Plus keeps the big 5.5″ IPS display of 1080p resolution (400ppi density), but adds 3D Touch technology underneath. This allows new interaction on system-wide level, just like on the Apple Watch. Now the iOS can distinct the taps from the force presses and trigger different actions for each. This is possible thanks to a new layer of sensors embedded in the back-lightning.

The iPhone 6s Plus also features a new taptic engine capable of more precise haptic feedback for the different gestures.

The next major change is the new A9 chip. According to Apple it offers 80% mode processing and 90% more graphics power than the A8 generation. We can’t yet confirm the exact CPU core count and speed, neither can we shed details on the new GPU and RAM amount just yet. The rumors suggested the RAM remains 1GB though.

There is also a new M9 co-processor, which us always on and tracks your activity. It also allows for the “Hey Siri” command, which activates Siri immediately.

Finally, the camera department has received a long overdue boost. The main camera now has a 12MP sensor and comes with optical image stabilization. As before, it is accompanied by a dual-LED dual-tone flash.

Thanks to the new higher resolution sensor the iPhone 6s Plus is now capable of capturing 2160p videos at 30 fps. Luckily Apple will be allowing you to choose the shooting resolution – you can opt for either 1080p or 2160p videos. Slow-mo recording at 720p @ 240fps is onboard as well.

The front camera finally receives the selfie upgrade – it now uses a 5MP sensor, supports face detection and you can capture 1080p videos, too.

The iPhone 6s Plus supports LTE Cat.6 connectivity, NFC for Apple Pay only, faster Wi-Fi 802.11ac and VoLTE support.

The rumors about a new color option were correct – in addition to the Silver, Space Gray and Gold paintjobs, we are also getting the pinkish Rose Gold…

Amazon is no longer selling the Fire Phone

It was a long time coming, but Amazon has finally burned through the last of its Fire Phone inventory. The company revealed the Fire Phone in summer of 2014 with much talk about its unique features, such as a 3D UI based on how you looked at the phone. Sadly, the Fire Phone didn’t deliver on expectations, with too many gimmicks combined with a high price.

After taking a big hit with the lackluster Fire Phone sales, Amazon tried to move through its inventory with loads of sales and price cuts. It tried cutting the price down to $0.99 on contract with AT&T and this summer, it dropped the off-contract price to $159. That final price cut seemed to do the trick, as many picked up the Fire Phone in large part due to the fact that it came with a free year of Amazon Prime, a $99 value.

Amazon has now listed the Fire Phone as currently unavailable with the disclaimer that it doesn’t know when it will be back in stock. That seemed final, but an Amazon spokesperson has confirmed that the company has indeed sold out of its stock of the Fire Phone, with the final units being sold at the end of August.

Goodbye, Fire Phone. You were naught but a candle in the wind.

Apple officially unveils the iPhone 6s with Force Touch screen

At today’s Apple event the company pulled the wraps off the iPhone 6s. The phone keeps the exterior of its predecessor, but features all new internals and some nice new extras. Those include a new processor, updated cameras at the front and back, and a pressure sensitive 3D Touch display.

3D Touch

In addition to multitouch, the new iPhone 6s recognizes force. It works on the homescreen and gives you shortcuts on the stuff you do frequently. Pressing lightly on an email thread, gives you a preview of the message, for example.

It also provides distinct and tactile feedback to your presses. Under the display, there’s a vibrating “Taptic engine”, which is similar to the one found on the Macbook trackpad and on the Apple Watch.

Otherwise, the display is the same 4.7″ Retina display found on the iPhone 6….
