Alternativas de código abierto para GMAIL

Gmail es uno de los mejores servicios de correo electrónico que existen hoy día, además disponer de una cuenta te abre las puertas a otros servicios de Google, como Blogger, GDrive, Docs, Calendar, Hangouts, sincronizaciones para tus dispositivos móviles con Android, etc. Pero no es la única alternativa a Hotmail/Outlook y otros servicios como Yahoo, también hay otras y de código abierto.

Las alternativas que vamos a presentar, al ser de código abierto, permiten mayor libertad y algunas de ellas tiene opciones muy diferentes a las que estamos acostumbrado en el correo de Google. Entre las alternativas que exponemos están las siguientes: 

  • Roundcube: es un moderno cliente de correo instalado en un servidor LAMP (Linux Apache MySQL y PHP). Contiene una interfaz sencilla y es rápido. Además permite traducción en hasta 70 lenguas, agenda, plantillas, API para crear extensiones, etc.
  • Zimba: otra interesante alternativa, su interfaz parece algo primitiva, pero es una idea interesante para usarlo al ser una solución all-in-one, con cliente de correo web y servidor de correo. Está bien mantenido y ha sido empleado por organizaciones y corporaciones.
  • SquirrelMail: los desarrolladores lo autodescriben como “webmail for nuts”. Es un cliente que no tiene tantas opciones como otros clientes modernos, pero es simple y sencillo. Es un proyecto bastante maduro, ya que lleva desde 1999 en funcionamiento.
  • Rainloop: tiene una interfaz muy trabajada, que poco tiene que envidiar a otras como la de Gmail. Tiene multitud de características que esperas en un correo, además se integra con Facebook Twitter, GOogle y Dropbox para ofrecer una mejor experiencia.
  • Kite: se creó para competir de tú a tú con Gmail, de hecho se puede considerar un clon de Gmail. Si estás acostumbrado a Gmail quizás es la mejor opción, pero tiene un problema y es que su desarrollo parece estancado. A pesar de que ya no recibe actualizaciones desde hace un año, aun merece la pena…

Por supuesto existen más, como HastyMail (un antiguo cliente de correo escrito en PHP y bajo licencia GPL), Mailpile (HTML5 y Python bajo AGLP, enfocado a la privacidad y la velocidad), WebMail Lite (moderno y minimalista, bajo licencia AGPL y escrito en PHP), y un largo etc.

Samsung Gear S2/S2 Classic goes up for preorder in Canada; shipping begins October 2

The Samsung Gear S2 and Gear S2 classic smartwatches, which were made official late last month and showcased at this year’s IFA in Berlin, are now up for pre-order in Canada.

Best Buy Canada is currently taking the pre-orders, and the listings show a release date of October 2. As for the price, the Gear S2 carries a tag of CAD 400 ($301), while the Classic variant will set you back CAD 430 ($324).

Specs-wise, the Gear S2 is powered by a 1GHz dual-core CPU, and sports a 1.2″ fully circular Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 360 x 360 pixels and 302ppi. It comes with 512MB RAM and 4GB internal memory, and packs in a 250mAh battery.

Connectivity options for the wearable include Wi-Fi: 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.1, and NFC. The smartwatch, which is IP68 dust proof and water resistant, runs the latest version of Tizen operating system.

Alcatel OneTouch to unveil a Windows 10 smartphone this year

Alcatel OneTouch, which is best known for its low cost phones, is working on a Windows 10 smartphone. This was revealed by the Chinese company’s senior vice president for North America Steve Cistulli, who also said that they are planning to unveil the device by the end of the year.

While there was no official word on the specs, the usually reliable leakster @evleaks revealed that the handset will be powered by a Snapdragon 210 SoC, and will sport a 5.5-inch 720p display. It will have 2GB RAM and 16GB expandable internal memory, and pack in a 2,500mAh battery.

In terms of camera, the device – which be called Fierce XL – will feature an 8MP rear unit and a 2MP front shooter. It is also said to support VoLTE. @evleaks says the Fierce XL will be announced in the month of December.
