Where Millennials Make Friends And Mobilize For Change

Add “making friends” to the growing roster of reasons why teens can’t seem to take their eyes off their screens. A new study, Teens, Technology and Friendships, released last week from Pew Research Center shows that 57% of teens (ages 13-17) have met at least one new friend online, with nearly 30% making five or more pals. Girls meet people primarily through social media, while boys tend to make acquaintances through gaming or eSports.

Which mediums are ripe for inspiring adaptation, and which are taken seriously as art forms and serious storytelling, has changed over time, most evidenced in modern time by the box office dominance of the superhero genre. Critics and audiences have embraced comic movies as serious storytelling, so much so that The Dark Knight’s acclaim and reputation in 2008 led the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to change the rules for nominating Best Picture contenders, to increase the nomination odds for films like Christopher Nolan’s remarkable Batman saga.
