Despite some hiccups, LastPass is one of the most popular password managers out there. And today it’s introduced some significant changes to how its freemium app model works.
Up until now, LastPass was free for desktops and laptops, but if you wanted to use it on your smartphone or tablet you had to go the Premium route, which costs $12 per year.
From this point on, you’ll be able to use LastPass for free on the class of device you’ve signed up on. So, new users who get started on a smartphone will be able to use the app for free, not only on that smartphone, but on any other smartphone they may own – with password syncing between them built-in.
Similarly, if you create your account on a tablet, the app will be free to use on all your tablets. And if you sign up from a computer, you’ll get free use on all computers you have.
If, however, you want to benefit from password syncing between your smartphones, tablets, and computers, then you’ll still need to pony up the $12 per year and get the Premium plan. This comes with a 14-day free trial.
All of the above applies only to new users. Existing users will see nothing change in the way they are able to take advantage of LastPass. Essentially, existing users are thrown into the “got started on a computer” category, so use (and syncing) between computers is free, while for everything else you need to pay.

This federal limit will impact the industry at virtually every level from the miners to the consumers and will have implications for the entire economy. If you Google “Google Alphabet” today, you get more than 41 million results. Google’s decision to reorganize itself as a conglomerate called Alphabet, separating its search and advertising business into one subsidiary with its own CEO, has generated a tsunami of coverage. Most of the stories say the same thing: The move increases transparency at the company, which is something that investors want, and it’s encouraging that Google co-founders, billionaires Larry Page and Sergey Brin will run the newly named parent company. Sundar Pichai, the well-liked Google executive who has been in charge of product and engineering at the Internet business, will be the CEO of the new subsidiary. All of the moves got cheers from Wall Street, which drove the stock up by 6% yesterday in after-hours trading. Shares declined this morning from nearly $671 to $658, but they’re still way up from $633 on Monday.

Esta misma mañana os informábamos de la nueva reestructuración de Google, para pasar a formar parte de una empresa todavía más grande, Alphabet. Se trata de un compendio de empresas, a cada cual más importante, cuyo CEO es Larry Page, hasta ahora CEO de Google, por lo que ese sillón de esta lo ha ocupado otro carismático integrante de la empresa de Mountain View: Sundar Pichai.
Pues bien, la noticia ahora es que esta megaempresa de nombre Alphabet, podría tener un futuro complicado precisamente por su nombre, y es que según nos informan los chicos de Android Central, ya está “ocupado”. Ni más ni menos que BMW, la famosa fabricante de automóviles alemana, podría entorpecer en cierto modo la marcha de Alphabet, y es precisamente tiene registrada esa marca para una de sus subsidiarias. Por si esto fuera poco, BMW también tiene en posesión el dominio Alphabet.com, aunque esto en principio no afecta a Google, ya que ha elegido la dirección abc.xyz –haciendo referencia a las tres primeras y tres últimas letras del abecedario.
Según The New York Times, BMW ya ha salido a la palestra para hablar sobre este tema:
La portavoz de BMW dijo el martes que el fabricante de automóviles no fue informado de antemano de los planes de Page y de Brin de crear una empresa llamada Alphabet, y no había recibido ninguna oferta para comprar el dominio de Internet o la marca registrada. “No estamos planeando vender el dominio”, dijo Micaela Sandstede, una portavoz de BMW en Múnich. Ella describió el sitio web como una parte “muy activa” de los negocios de Alphabet. BMW está estudiando cualquier posible infracción sobre la marca, dijo Sandstede.
Así, no parece que BMW se haya tomado demasiado bien este movimiento por parte de Google, algo totalmente lógico teniendo en cuenta que puede Alphabet es una marca registrada por la alemana. Ahora, veremos cuáles son las conclusiones de BMW tras sus investigaciones acerca de este caso, y si decide o no emprender acciones legales frente a Google. Todo apunta a que así será, a no ser que Google decida poner las cartas sobre la mesa y entrar en negociaciones.
Hay que recordar que Google también está inmersa en mayor o menor medida en el negocio de los automóviles, con proyectos como el coche autónomo, o Android Auto, el software que lleva Android a los vehículos.

Wine es un proyecto excelente desde todo punto de vista, y es que nos permite ejecutar apps de Windows en Linux, algo que a veces por más que queramos no podemos evitar aunque lo deseemos. No es un emulador -algo que muchos parecieran creer erróneamente- sino que se trata de una capa de compatibilidad, cuestión que logran básicamente al añadir a nuestro sistema operativo varias de las APIs y librerías que dichas apps necesitan para ser ejecutadas.
Pero Wine no es un proyecto que avance todo lo rápido que sus usuarios desearían, algo que se ve en cierto modo matizado por el hecho de disponer de Wine-Staging. Aquí se ven características más avanzadas y experimentales, y por ello podemos hablar de un Wine supervitaminado tal como nos comentaba mi compañero Joaquín hace poco tiempo; dicho esto queremos comentar acerca de la llegada de Wine-Staging 1.7.49, una versión que trae una característica muy esperada.
Es que por fin se podrá utilizar apps de Windows con el look nativo de GTK3, algo que permitirá una integración mucho mayor al escritorio de GNOME y también a aquellos basados en el como XFCE o MATE, por más que su soporte para GTK3 todavía esté en expansión. Hay que decir que de momento se trata de una característica en estado experimental, puesto que está siendo desarrollada y mejorada, y puede que algunos usuarios noten un consumo más alto de ciclos de CPU, por ello no está activada por defecto.
Para hacerlo hay que dirigirse a la pestaña de Staging, en la configuración de Wine, o bien al archivo winecfg y habilitarla, tras lo cual ya podremos ejecutar apps de Windows con el look’n feel de GTK3. Habrá alguna que otra dependencia para cumplir, lo cual seguramente implicará que necesitaremos descargar algunas librerías adicionales, lo cual es un pequeño costo a pagar para disponer de esta característica que ha sido siempre muy solicitada entre los usuarios.
Más allá de esto también llegan en Wine-Staging 1.7.49 correcciones de todo tipo, y se añadieron dlls para MSVC 2015 (librería de runtine de Windows 10, se solucionó un bug que acontecía durante el uso de Final Fantasy XIV y otros que afectaban el desempeño de apps de Office, en todo caso podemos ver la lista completa de mejoras en este enlace.
