Intel And Micron Jointly Announce Game-Changing 3D XPoint Memory Technology

In the semiconductor industry there are often break-through, game-changing technologies that are unveiled and then there are the sort of absolute thermonuclear detonations like Intel and Micron just jointly announced. At a morning press conference in San Francisco, Intel and Micron unveiled 3D XPoint (Cross Point) memory technology, a non-volatile memory architecture so disruptive it could very well change the entire landscape of consumer and enterprise computing in very short order–from laptops and desktops, to enterprise servers, game consoles and hand-held devices. The bulk of current gen solid state storage requirements for computer architectures are serviced by NAND Flash technology, which offers dramatically faster read and write response times over mechanical hard drives, at the expense of capacity and cost primarily but also it’s still one of the slower bottlenecks in a given device architecture.

So another British institution falls into foreign ownership with the sale of the Financial Times (FT) for £844 million (c.US$1.3bn) cash by Pearson Group to Nikkei Inc., the largest independent business media group in Asia. That’s 35 times the FT Group’s adjusted operating income of £24m last year. But are Pearson shares a buy, hold or sell?

Qualcomm’s WiPower brings wireless charging to devices with metal backs

Wireless charging has certainly started to pick up steam recently, with even Samsung putting out flagship smartphones using the tech. There's been just one problem, however: so far no one figured out how to make wireless charging work nicely with devices with metal backs.

This is why the phones that have wireless charging built-in have backs made out of glass or plastic. And this is why devices sporting metal unibody constructions have not been able to add this feature yet.

But that's all set to change, since today Qualcomm has announced that it's managed to make wireless charging work for devices with metal backs, without the need for any additional cases.

Qualcomm's wireless charging tech is called WiPower, and the company promises it will be compatible with the Rezence standard. Mobile device manufacturers will be able to incorporate WiPower in their metal products in the future. The required techniques and reference designs have been made available to Qualcomm's partners today.

With the growing trend of using metal in smartphone construction, this is certainly good news – and could help wireless charging be picked up even more by future handsets. Qualcomm hasn't gone into details about how it all works, sticking to the promo video you can see above for now. But the important thing here is that it works.

It's also good to note that WiPower allows devices to be charged wirelessly without the need for precise alignment or even direct physical contact between the charger and the product it's charging. Furthermore, the technology enables simultaneous charging of multiple devices.

Huawei Honor 7 launches in the UK on August 27

Huawei unveiled the Honor 7 at the end of June, and it's so far been available to buy only in China. But that's set to change next month, when the affordable smartphone is due to make it to the UK.

A few weeks back Huawei released a promo video for the Honor 7 in which it basically confirmed that it would sell the handset in Europe eventually. And now we know when the Honor 7 will be offered outside of China.

The Honor 7 will get a special launch event in the UK on August 27. It might become available soon after that, certainly in unlocked and SIM-free form (as has been the case with previous Honor-branded devices).

The phone features an aluminum alloy construction and comes with a 5.2-inch 1080p touchscreen, a 20 MP rear camera, an 8 MP selfie shooter, 3GB of RAM, 16 or 64GB of expandable storage, and a 3,100 mAh battery. It's powered by Huawei's own Kirin 935 SoC, with an octa-core Cortex-A53 CPU clocked at up to 2.2 GHz. It runs Android 5.0 Lollipop, with the Chinese company's Emotion UI 3.1 on…

Cómo comprar un OnePlus 2, y todo lo que necesitas saber antes de hacerlo

Hoy mismo se ha presentado el nuevo OnePlus 2, el esperado tope de gama de la starup. También el nuevo Motorola Moto G 2015, que ya se puede comprar e incluso tenerlo en casa mañana mismo. Sin embargo, esto no es tan sencillo en el caso del smartphone chino, y por ello, a continuación os mostraremos cómo comprar un OnePlus 2.

Del mismo modo que ocurría con el OnePlus One, para conseguirlo existe un sistema de invitaciones, y lógicamente, antes de poder comprarlo, debemos conseguir una invitación. Eso sí, OnePlus nos ha prometido que el sistema ha sido mejorado, de forma que será más eficaz, con el objetivo de reducir notablemente los tiempos para conseguir nuestra ansiada invitación. Estos son los aspectos mejorados por parte de ka compañía:

  • Un mayor número de invitaciones: El stock de inicio del OnePlus 2 es entre 30 y 50 veces superior al del OnePlus One.

  • Una lista de reserva: Simplemente nos tendremos que registrar con nuestro correo electrónico, y cuando tengamos la invitación disponible, nos avisarán automáticamente.

  • Las invitaciones para compartir llegarán más rápido: Las invitaciones extra a las que tienen derecho los usuarios que compren el OnePlus 2 llegarán mucho más rápido.

Bajo esos tres pilares fundamentales se ha reconstruido el sistema de invitaciones, por lo que todo debería ser mucho más rápido que en 2014, evitando las largas esperas del principio hasta que nos llegue una invitación. Parece ser que esta vez será cuestión de pocas semanas que todo el que lo desee, ya tenga su invitación.

Si habéis estado atentos a la lectura, ya sabréis que ahora existe una lista en la que nos podemos registrar, y cuando esté libre una invitación, se nos avisará automáticamente a nuestro correo electrónico. Sin embargo, esta no será la única forma de conseguir una, ya que se conservan los métodos “tradicionales”. Es decir, seguimos teniendo la posibilidad de que alguien que tenga una invitación nos la dé, y por otra parte, volverán los diferentes concursos y promociones. Qué hacer con la invitación

Bien. Ya hemos conseguido la invitación, y el siguiente paso es usarla para comprar nuestro OnePlus 2. Para ello, primero debemos dirigirnos a nuestra cuenta dentro de la página de OnePlus, y activar la invitación que está en nuestro poder. A partir de aquí tenemos un plazo de 24 horas para proceder a la compra. Si expirase ese tiempo, la invitación ya no sería válida, y se asignaría a otra persona que se ha registrado en esa lista de reserva de la que hemos hablado anteriormente, y que lógicamente está esperando su invitación.

Os recordamos que su precio es de 339 euros para el modelo de 16 GB, y de 399 euros para el de 64 GB, y que además de la carcasa Sandstone Black con la que viene, también habrá disponibles la Bamboo, la Black Apricot, la Rosewood, y la Kevlar.

Una vez comprado, el envío puede tardar hasta 3 semanas en realizarse, periodo durante el que, desde nuestra cuenta, podemos cancelar la compra. Por el momento, OnePlus no tiene pensado hacer la compra accesible sin invitación, por lo que, como en el caso del OnePlus One, deberán pasar unos meses hasta que eso ocurra, aunque esperamos que sean bastantes menos.
