Not too many years ago, “big data” was a new and unfamiliar phrase that cropped up before anyone really defined it.  We never did reach consensus on a precise meaning, even as the term slipped into common parlance and big data has now transformed what’s possible in business and society. Some people still fuss over an exact definition; but as I’ve argued here before, that’s a moot point.  We may not have an exact meaning; but we know what big data has come to mean for our economy and for our world.

Uber is testing back-to-back rides, which lets drivers accept rides requests from new passengers before they have dropped off their current passenger. The move increases Uber’s driver supply and could let drivers earn money during more of their time on the clock, but some drivers say it will increase distracted driving.

A former FireEye intern was the creator of an Android malware selling for as much as $65,000 on the Darkode forum, which was shut down today, according to US prosecutors. The 20-year-old Carnegie Mellon student appears to have been working at FireEye whilst he was developing and disseminating the Dendroid tool, which stole all kinds of data from victims’ smartphones.
