Huawei says 4K on smartphones isn’t worth the battery drain

Chinese manufacturer Huawei has made it clear that it won’t be using 4K displays in its smartphones in the near future. According to the company’s President of the Handset Product Line Kevin Ho, the advanced displays would result in a major compromises to battery life, something which the company isn’t willing to accept.

“4K needs a lot of power, so if you use it you have to make compromises. A 4K display on a smartphone may give you half a day of battery life but a 2K display can give you maybe one day or more,” Ho said. “4K has four times the pixels of Full HD so the power consumption is maybe 4 or 8 times as much as Full HD so the smartphone has to have compromises with battery life.”

Ho also asserted that while 4K looks impressive on large screens, it’s difficult to tell the difference between 4K and 2K on a smaller smartphone display of five to six inches.

Super View of Glendale and Phoenix

One of the Expedition 35 crew members on the International Space Station used a still camera with a 400 millimeter lens to record this nocturnal image of the Phoenix, Arizona area on March 16, 2013. Like many large urban areas of the central and western United States, the Phoenix metropolitan area is laid out along a regular grid of city blocks and streets. While visible during the day, this grid is most evident at night, when the pattern of street lighting is clearly visible from above — in the case of this photograph, from the low Earth orbit vantage point of the International Space Station. The urban grid form encourages growth of a city outwards along its borders, by providing optimal access to new real estate. Fueled by the adoption of widespread personal automobile use during the 20th century, the Phoenix metropolitan area today includes 25 other municipalities (many of them largely suburban and residential in character) linked by a network of surface streets and freeways. The image area includes parts of several cities in the metropolitan area including Phoenix proper (right), Glendale (center), and Peoria (left). While the major street grid is oriented north-south, the northwest-southeast oriented Grand Avenue cuts across it at image center. Grand Avenue is a major transportation corridor through the western metropolitan area; the lighting patterns of large industrial and commercial properties are visible along its length. Other brightly lit properties include large shopping centers, strip centers, and gas stations which tend to be located at the intersections of north-south and east-west trending streets. While much of the land area highlighted in this image is urbanized, there are several noticeably dark areas. The Phoenix Mountains at upper right are largely public park and recreational land. To the west (image lower left), agricultural fields provide a sharp contrast to the lit streets of neighboring residential developments. The Salt River channel appears as a dark ribbon within the urban grid at lower right.

The floor is cluttered with a gridwork of bricks rendering it impossible to walk any direction but forward.

OnePlus abrirá una oficina en Europa

Oneplus consiguió crear una expectación impresionante con su primer terminal, el OnePlus One. Un dispositivo que marcó un antes y un después en el sector al ofrecer unas prestaciones que lo ensalzaban en lo más alto del sector a un precio realmente atractivo.

Su más que cuestionado sistema de invitaciones frenó un poco las ventas, aunque el fabricante ha afirmado que han vendido más de un millón de unidades de su actual buque insignia. Sabíamos que OnePlus quiere crecer y parece que su próximo objetivo será Europa.

Y es que la startup china va a abrir una oficina en el Viejo Continente, una medida más que acertada ya que ganarán tanto en publicidad como en ventas. El servicio técnico es uno de los puntos débiles de OnePlus y su OnePlus One, y el hecho de que pueda haber un SAT de OnePlus en Europa aceleraría la solución de problemas, algo que los consumidores agradecerán.

Para abrir sus nuevas oficinas están buscando nuevo personal y el CEO de la compañía, Carl Pei, ha mandado un mensaje a los mil empleados de Sony que fueron despedidos recientemente para que envíen sus currículums.
Ahora que estamos esperando la llegada del OnePlus Two, imaginad que ofrecen este terminal sin sistema de invitaciones y lo envían directamente desde Europa y encima ofrecen garantía sin necesidad de enviar el terminal a China.

Seguramente las ventas iban a mejorar, y mucho. Además por lo que hemos podido ver hasta ahora el OnePlus Two tiene muy buena pinta. Un terminal que podría lucir una pantalla de 5.5 pulgadas con una resolución que alcanzará los 1440 x 2560 píxeles.

Se espera que el OnePlus Two funcione gracias a un procesador con arquitectura de 64 bits Qualcomm Snapdragon 810, junto con 4 GB de memoria RAM. La batería que utilizaría el próximo buque insignia de OnePlus tendría una capacidad de 3.300 mAh, más que suficiente para poder soportar el potente hardware que integrará el esperado nuevo smartphone de OnePlus.

Veremos cuándo abren la primera oficina de OnePlus en Europa, porque estoy seguro que va a ser un movimiento muy acertado.
