Andorid-powered flip phone Phillips V800 passes through TENAA

Flip phones used to rule the land, now their habitat has shrunk to a tiny part of the Far Eastern markets. The latest addition is the Phillips V800, not official yet, but it passed through TENAA (China’s wireless regulator). The phone runs Android 5.1 and has entry-level specs.

It has two identical screens – 3.7″ TFTs with 720p resolution (one outside, one inside). There are two cameras as well – one outside, on the back (13MP/1080p) and one on the inside for selfies (5MP).

The Phillips V800 measures 19.1mm thick and weighs 206g. There’s a reason flip phones fell out of fashion when “thin and light” became the new hotness.

Anyway, it has a quad-core processor at 1.5GHz, it has 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage (thankfully, with a microSD slot). On the plus side, there’s LTE connectivity (both global and Chinese flavors).

There’s no word on launch date or pricing yet, but since it passed though TENAA it can’t be long now.

Galaxy S7 and S7 edge water resistance confirmed by import listings

The Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 edge are now less than two weeks away from an official unveiling (once again, February 21), and by now you may have gotten tired of the daily leaks. This latest one is more important than most though, as it gives credibility to the rumored water resistance of the two smartphones.

India’s customs database Zauba lists spare parts for the Galaxy S7 (SM-G930F), and while the warranty void seals aren’t overly exciting, the waterproof mic and sim tray sort of are. It’s unclear what the HRM and Octa components stand for, but it’s all about the keyword “waterproof” here. And with quantities in the thousands, it’s reasonably certain we’re talking mass produced final components.

Samsung is going back and forth with the waterproofing and after having IP67 certification on the Galaxy S5, chose to omit it for the current S6 generation. That only left Sony as the major manufacturer to offer waterproof smartphones, though the Japanese company subsequently revised its policy on actual submersion. We’ll wait and see what exactly Samsung will let you do with the Galaxy S7 under water, and under warranty, that is.

Microsoft Lumia 640 drops to $49 in US

The Microsoft Lumia 640 has received an official price cut in the United States. The device is now listed on the Redmond, Washington-based company’s US online store for $49 off contract, down from its usual price of $60.

The $11 discount is available until the beginning of the next week – February 15 to be precise (seems like a Valentine’s Day offer). An important thing worth mentioning here is that the handset on offer is locked to AT&T.

This comes just over a month after the XL variant of the Lumia 640 received a $50 official price cut in the country. That deal, however, has expired…

Unlocked Samsung Galaxy S6 now available for $450 in US

Samsung’s last year’s flagship smartphone – the Galaxy S6 – has received a price cut in the US, where online retailer Amazon is now selling the 32GB model for as low as $450. The price goes up to $470 depending on the color option you choose.

Compatible with both AT&T and T-Mobile, the Black Sapphire variant costs $451, while the Gold and White variants are listed for $457 and $460, respectively. The Blue Topaz variant is the costliest, carrying a $470 price tag. Samsung is selling the 32GB unlocked unit for $600, while Best Buy has it listed for $530.

The price drop shouldn’t come as a surprise given that the phone is fast approaching its first birthday, and not to mention that its successor – the Galaxy S7 – is all set to be unveiled in less than a couple of weeks from now.

Google is offering 2GB of free Drive storage to those who take an account security checkup

Today is Safer Internet Day – a day aimed at promoting the safe, responsible, and positive use of digital technology. And just like last year, Google is celebrating the day by offering free Drive storage to those who perform a security audit of their Google account.

In case you didn’t take it last year, the Google Security Checkup lets you quickly review and manage your Google Account’s security settings. These include recovery options, connected devices, account permissions, and 2-step verification settings.

Those who complete the audit – a process which takes just a few minutes – will be entitled to 2GB of free Drive storage. Keep in mind that the free storage might not show up immediately. Last year, Google gave a week’s window to complete the security checkup – it isn’t yet clear how much time do we have this year, so act fast if you want that extra Drive storage.

Late last month, we told you about Google’s $50 discount on the Nexus 5X in the US, which came just a couple of weeks after it received a $30 price cut. Given that Google initially didn’t mention any end date for the promo, we thought the price cut was permanent.

However, turns out that’s not the case. The Mountain View, California-based company has now revealed that the deal ends this week – February 12 to be precise. This means those who want to take advantage of the price cut now only have a few days to act.

With the discount, the 16GB model of the LG-made handset will cost you $299, while the 32GB variant will set you back…
