New Android N Developer Preview release is out with automatic updates

Google usually announces a new version of Android at its annual developer conference called I/O. This year, however, we’ve already seen two Android N Developer Preview releases, so the search giant doesn’t have anything new to announce – or does it?

Today the company is pushing out the third big release of the Android N Developer Preview. According to the company, this is the first “beta quality” iteration of the next OS version, so you may even get away with installing it on your main device without any nastiness (then again, “beta” doesn’t mean “bug free”, keep that in…

Google Home becomes official as the search giant’s Amazon Echo competitor

The recent rumors were true, as it turns out. At its developer conference today, Google has announced Home, a device that’s basically its response to Amazon’s highly successful Echo line of smart Bluetooth speakers.

Like Amazon’s offerings, Google Home will take voice commands from you (including letting you search, naturally), it will talk back to you, and it’s also a speaker. So you can play some music on it if you want.

Unlike the Echo, Google Home supports the Google Cast protocol, so you can even send stuff to it from your phone, tablet, or laptop. You can also tell it to play…

Sony Xperia X battery life

The Xperia Z brand was a mark of Methuselah-like battery life, but now fans are a little antsy – the Z-series is no more, the X-series replaces it. Has the battery gene carried over?

The Xperia X has definitely lost some capacity – the Z3 had 3,100mAh, the Z5 had 2,900mAh, the Xperia X has 2,620mAh. Even the Xperia Z5 had 2,700mAh, so it falls to a new chipset and newer components (the screen largely) to cut back on their power use and make up the difference.

Before we use up the battery, we have to charge it first. The Sony Xperia X supports fast charging, but you’ll have to bring your…

Alcatel Flash Plus 2 goes official, to cost $160 in Asia

Alcatel (owned by TLC) has been very consistent with the Flash brand. The first Alcatel Flash went official back in September 2014 while the Flash 2 was announced a year later in September 2015. The Flash Plus model, an expansion of the original Flash, was introduced in May 2015 and this May we are getting its refresh with the Alcatel Flash Plus 2.

Enough with the history lesson, though. The Alcatel Flash Plus 2 is an all-metal smartphone, which is great news for a mid-ranger. It features a 5.5″ 1080p display and runs on the Helio P10 chipset with an octa-core Cortex-A53 processor (4x…

Marshmallow update starts rolling out to Samsung Galaxy Tab A

Samsung has started rolling out the Marshmallow update to Galaxy Tab A. The update, which brings Android version 6.0.1 and bumps the build number to T550XXU1BPE1, is currently hitting the 9.7-inch Wi-Fi model (SM-T550) in France.

Aside from the usual Marshmallow goodies – including Doze, Google Now on Tap, and redesigned app permissions – it isn’t yet known what else (if at all) the update brings along. It is currently only available via Samsung Smart Switch, although OTA roll out shouldn’t be far off.
