Movado partners with HP for the Bold Motion smartwatch

Smartwatches are beginning to branch out, particularly on the luxury end. We recently saw the launch of the TAG Heuer Connected, the result of Google’s partnership with the Swiss watchmaker. Now, Movado, another Swiss watchmaker, is introducing a smartwatch that’s been engineered in conjunction with HP. The Movado Bold Motion retains the iconic modern design of Movado products, but pairs it with smartwatch technology for greater functionality, in a similar manner to Withings and the Activité smartwatch.

The watch itself looks similar to other Movado products, with an exceptionally simple watch face that’s highlighted by a circular disc that marks the 12:00 spot. The Bold Motion, however, uses subtle design elements to add smartwatch functionality. The watch features small LED indicators around the edges of the watch face that work in conjunction with a haptic feedback motor to provide bits of information provided by your smartphone. For example, a the Bold Motion will vibrate and light up a specific indicator if you have a new email, or if you have an upcoming appointment, it’ll alert you with a different indicator. In addition to that, it also tracks your steps to keep you up to date on how much you’re moving.

Movado worked with HP to incorporate new functionality into a standard watch design, and the result is a stunning smartwatch, though at a higher price and with less functionality than many others. The Movado Bold Motion is priced at $695 and is “coming soon”, though no specific date has been given. It features Bluetooth connectivity, as well as compatibility with both iOS and Android.

This isn’t HP’s first partnership with a high-end watchmaker. If you’ll remember, the company worked with Michael Bastian to create the MB Chronowing, a fashion-oriented smartwatch that offered even more functionality than the Bold Motion. HP hasn’t ventured into the smartwatch market with its own device, but it seems to be benefiting from these partnerships to create niche devices. We’ll keep an eye on the company and its movements in the smartwatch market.

Withings releases the Activité Steel

Withings has announced the latest entry into the Activité series of fitness trackers today, the gorgeous Activité Steel.

The Activité Steel sits between the Pop and Activité, offering up a stainless steel casing and silicone sport strap with 8 months of battery life on a button cell battery and up to 50 meters of water resistance, all for $169.

Much like the Activité and Activité Pop, the Activité Steel really shines in the design department. Instead of a gaudy LED display, the Activité Steel is an honest-to-goodness watch with a beautiful black dial and chrome hands. It even has a sub-dial for measuring your goal activity without having to dive into Withings fitness tracking app.

Personally, I have used Withings Activité Pop for awhile now and I absolutely love it. Paired with a Nato strap, the Activité Pop is comfortable, sleek and looks great dressed up or down. I can’t wait to get my hands on an Activité Steel next.

To buy the Activité Steel today, head on over to Withings website.

The Galaxy View is coming to AT&T November 20

Samsung’s absolutely massive tablet TV, the Galaxy View, is officially coming to AT&T with LTE on November 20.

The Galaxy View is touted as being built for TV, with an 18.4-inch display and a kickstand that really drives that message home. AT&T is playing into this fact by offering a special deal on the View, offering the device up at $99 for existing DIRECTV customers who open a new two-year wireless agreement on AT&T Next, or new DIRECTV customers who opt for a two-year contract. AT&T customers can snag the View for $0 down and $30 per month for 20 months with an AT&T Tablet Installment Plan, or $499.99 with a two-year agreement.

While it’s nice to see AT&T offer the device, we can’t help but feel like there will be better deals to be had on the View in due time. AT&T is making things about as complicated as it gets.

Ashton Kutcher and Motorola show how Motos make for a better relationship

Ashton Kutcher and Motorola have a theory, “that people are actually in love with their phones.” And wouldn’t you know it, Motorola’s phones can make that relationship much better.

In a series of “experiments” held with willing participants and Motorola, with Doctor Kutcher (please don’t really call him that) serving as lead scientist (please don’t really call him that either), people are tested to see how much they really love their phone. There are two videos, one promoting the Droid Turbo 2 and one promoting the Moto X Pure Edition, that go along with a handful of other videos from Motorola showcasing how much people value their smartphones.

The videos are short, so we won’t spoil them for you, but we will say this: Punk’d has never been more primed for a revival.

Here’s when Marshmallow is coming to the OnePlus One and 2

OnePlus has officially laid out some details as to when the OnePlus One and OnePlus 2 will be receiving the update to the latest version of Android, Marshmallow.

Posted on the OnePlus forum, both the OnePlus One and 2 can expect Marshmallow in Q1. While no specific dates were given, that means at the most OnePlus users have around 4 months to wait.

Marshmallow for the OnePlus One will be coming in the form of Cyanogen OS, while the OnePlus 2 will continue to run OxygenOS with a few tweaks, like the addition of Google’s standard fingerprint reader API.

OnePlus didn’t have anything to share on the OnePlus X right now, but more info should be coming soon.

Leaked document reveals Samsung’s Marshmallow update roadmap

A newly leaked document has surfaced that gives us insight into Samsung’s Android Marshmallow update plans. The roadmap documents categorize various Samsung phones into three distinct phases, listing release months alongside the most popular Android devices that Samsung has released over the last year.

While the leaked documents do name all the most popular Android phones in Samsung’s lineup, the model numbers shown are for the unlocked variants, not the carrier-branded version that you most likely purchased from your service provider. We don’t yet have any details as to when Samsung plans on releasing Android 6.0 for the various carrier-branded versions of its phones, but we can easily assume that the updates for carrier models will fall at least 2-4 weeks after the unlocked versions are updated.

Phase 1

As you might expect, the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and Samsung Galaxy S6 edge+ will be among the first Samsung phones to be updated to Android 6.0. The two devices are expected to receive the Marshmallow update in December. Starting in January, Samsung plans to release the new version of Android for its flagship Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 edge phones, followed by the Galaxy Note 4 and Note Edge in February. The Samsung Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Alpha are also included in Phase 1, but the document lists the release status as “waiting approval” with no ETA given.

  • Samsung Galaxy Note 5 (DEC 2015)
  • Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+ (DEC 2015)
  • Samsung Galaxy S6 (JAN 2016)
  • Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge (JAN 2016)
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 4 (JAN 2016)
  • Samsung Galaxy Note Edge (FEB 2016)
  • Samsung Galaxy S5 (TBD)
  • Samsung Galaxy Alpha (TBD)

Phase 2 (TBD)

The second phase of Samsung’s Android 6.0 roadmap lists the Samsung Galaxy A3, A5, A7, A8, E5 and E7 but does not give any indication as to when the new software will be delivered to each phone. If we assume that Samsung will be focusing all of its attention on phase 1 before beginning the rollout of phase 2, the earliest we could see an Android Marshmallow build for any of these phones is spring of 2016.

  • Samsung Galaxy A8
  • Samsung Galaxy A7
  • Samsung Galaxy A5
  • Samsung Galaxy A3
  • Samsung Galaxy E7
  • Samsung Galaxy E5

Phase 3 (TBD)

While not specifically listed in today’s leaked Marshmallow roadmap, the devices below are also expected to be updated to Android 6.0. Based on Samsung’s history, we wouldn’t be surprised if these devices don’t get updated to Android 6.0 before next summer.

  • Samsung Galaxy J5
  • Samsung Galaxy J7
  • Samsung Galaxy On5
  • Samsung Galaxy On7
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab E
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 8.0
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 9.7
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab A

MetroPC website inadvertently revealed sensitive data for more than 10 million customers

Sensitive information pertaining to more than 10 million MetroPCS customers was put at risk by the company’s web team due to some sloppy coding. The “bug” was discovered by security researchers Eric Taylor and Blake Welsh and allowed them to gain access to a person’s home address, phone serial number and additional account details simply by entering their phone number. The good news is that MetroPCS has fixed the issue on its site and there’s no evidence that anyone with malicious intent had gained access to customer details through the company’s website.

Keeping customer data secure is a very difficult task, but there’s no excuse for sloppy coding on a public website which could potentially cause havoc to MetroPCS and all of its customers. We’re hoping that their web team will be a little more attentive in the future and that other companies are taking a second look at their websites as well.

New HTC One X9 leak offers another look at the unannounced phone

Another day, another HTC One X9 leak. This time we’re getting a peek at the unannounced Android phone from TENAA, which is sort of like China’s version of the FCC.

TENAA has posted several images of the HTC One X9 to its website, and the phone looks a lot like the one that surfaced earlier this week. There appear to be a pair of BoomSound speakers on the front of the phone as well as a set of capacitive navigation buttons. On the sides we can see volume and power buttons, and around back there’s an oblong camera housing with a flash.

According to today’s leak, the HTC One X9 features a 5.5-inch 1920×1080 display, 2.2GHz octa-core processor, 13-megapixel rear camera, 5-megapixel front-facing shooter, 16GB of storage with a microSD slot for added storage, 2GB of RAM, and Android 5.0.2 Lollipop. All of those features are packed into a body that measures 153.2 x 75.9 x 7.99mm and weighs 174 grams.

This One X9 isn’t a bad-looking phone, borrowing design cues from devices like the One A9, One V, and Nexus 6P. Its mid-range spec sheet is going to turn off folks that want a flagship smartphone, but that’s what the One M10 is for. If it’s priced appropriately, the One X9 could be marketed as an affordable phablet.
