Altec Lansing announces truly wireless Freedom Earbuds

Much like wireless charging, there is usually a big caveat to wireless earbuds that there is in fact a wire connecting the two earbuds. While this is hardly a deal breaker, there are definitely some advantages to being truly wireless and today Altec Lansing has taken the wraps off the Freedom Earbuds that offer that truly wireless experience.

Each earbud offers six-hours of battery life and the included carrying case offers a three-hour additional charge. The earbuds can be used in stereo or independently if mono is all you need at the moment. The case uses a standard USB port, so it can be used to charge other devices if you wish.

The Freedom Earbuds are IPX7-rated waterproof, which means they are ready to join you for a workout, but not for a swim. Conveniently for keeping your phone stored away while using the earbuds they have track navigation and call answer/hang up buttons on board.

Altec Lansing has also included a feature that I would have considered killing for a few times with my Moto Hint and that is the ability to track the earbuds down using the Bluetooth connection and the free companion app. The app is also used to link the earbuds for stereo performance and to switch between multiple paired devices.

The Freedom Earbuds will be available in Q2 of this year for $149.99 and come in 9 different colors.

Mad Catz joins “Designed for Samsung” program, optimizing for Samsung hardware

Most gamers will be familiar with Mad Catz, whether you get your gaming done on mobile, consoles or PC there are Mad Catz products designed to give you precision control.

Today Mad Catz has announced that they are joining the “Designed for Samsung” (DFS) program, which will require new hardware to pass Samsung’s certification process before being blessed with the DFS logo on the packaging.

These products will naturally continue to perform just fine with other manufacturers smartphones and tablets, it is simply an added bonus for Samsung owners that want to be sure they are getting a product that will perform at a high level for them.

There are no specifics regarding pricing or availability on the DFS products, but the two most likely candidates are the L.Y.N.X. 9 and L.Y.N.X. 3 controllers, which retail for $299 and $69 at present. There’s no reason to expect that pricing to change as a result of this announcement.

While NVIDIA has done an amazing job producing Android hardware that is optimized for gaming it’s good to see other companies working to make Android a first-class gaming platform.

Do any of you already own a controller for your Android smartphone or tablet or have you considered purchasing one?

Lenovo unveils its high-end ThinkPad 13 Chromebook

Lenovo has unveiled its 2016 CES laptop lineup, revealing its new ThinkPad 13 Chromebook. While there are a lot of cheap Chromebooks on the market, Lenovo is hoping that the ThinkPad 13 Chromebook will impress its long-time customers who appreciate traditional ThinkPad build and internal hardware that’s comparable to Windows 10 laptops. On the outside, the Chromebook features a soft-touch plastic shell with a reinforced frame, Lenovo’s signature ThinkPad keyboard, multi-touch trackpad, 1080p 13-inch display, two USB 3.0 ports, a USB-C port (which doubles as the laptop’s charging port), HDMI out connector and a 42Wh battery which Lenovo claims will power the ThinkPad 13 Chromebook for a full 10 hours. Those who choose to buy the ThinkPad 13 Chromebook will be able to choose between Core i3 and i5 processors, with RAM options up to 8GB with 32GB of internal storage.

The Lenovo ThinkPad 13 Chromebook will go on sale in June. The Core i3 model will sell for $399, but you’ll easily be able to spend more than $500 if you slap on all the available upgrades.

With more high-end Chromebooks being announced, we suspect Chromebook’s market share will grow even faster in 2016.

Huawei looks to announce the P9 at CES; 6GB of RAM included?

CES is upon us and while most of the rumors have been broken for a while now, there’s an interesting new one indicating that Huawei may have a powerful device up its sleeve for its CES event tomorrow. That device is the Huawei P9, a stunning showcase of specs that could be one of Huawei’s most powerful devices to date.

Some of the rumored specs include a 5.2-inch 1080p display, an octa-core Kirin 950 processor and, most shocking of all, 6GB of RAM. Packing the P9 with 6GB of RAM would ensure that it has more RAM than any other device on the market. The move is physically possible, but it seems unnecessary. That being said, there are sure to be some spec hounds who would purchase the P9 based on the RAM.

The rumor of the P9 has also gained some credibility from Taylor Wimberly, the eCommerce Customer Acquisition Manager at Huawei. Wimberly shared a new promo image (pictured at top) on Google+. The image shows us a glimpse of the Huawei P9 and uses the words power and efficiency to describe it.

In addition to the P9, Huawei may be introducing a new tablet (or phablet) at the show. The Huawei Honor X3 is rumored to be a 6.2-inch tablet that will be Huawei’s fist device with a 2K display. It will also include an octa-core Kirin 950 processor, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, 20-megapixel rear camera and an 8-megapixel front-facing camera. The tablet will run on Android 6.0 Lollipop.

No additional confirmation has been given to the existence of the Honor X3, so we may or may not see that tomorrow.

All in all, you’ll want to keep an eye on Huawei’s CES event tomorrow.

Acer beefs up its Chrome OS offerings with the Chromebase 24 all-in-one and CB3-131Chromebook

CES is off to a good start for Acer. In addition to announcing the Acer H7 (the world’s first USB Type-C monitor) and a handful of Windows 10 laptops, Acer has also unveiled two new Chrome OS devices.

Acer Chromebase 24

Powered by Intel’s Core processors, the Acer Chromebase 24 is the most powerful all-in-one Chrome OS device ever announced. The Chromebase 24 features a 23.8-inch IPS display and 8GB of RAM. The 1080p panel also comes with a touchscreen option for those who enjoy getting greasy fingerprints all over their desktop display.

The Chromebase 24 will be positioned as an education and videoconferencing device thanks to its four internal microphones and adjustable HD webcam. Acer isn’t revealing full specifications and pricing yet since those details will vary based on where the Chromebase 24 is purchased.

Acer CB3-131 Chromebook

The Acer CB3-131 Chromebook is a pretty standard Intel Celeron-powered Chromebook featuring an 11.6-inch 1366 x 768-pixel display, 802.11n Wi-Fi, 2/4GB of memory 16/32GB of storage, 3 USB ports, SD card reader and HDMI out, while promising nine hours of battery life.

The specs and design of the Acer CB3-131 Chromebook will not be turning heads, but Acer is hoping that the laptop’s semi-rugged aluminum and plastic build will make it appealing for parents or schools. Acer claims that the CB3-131 can withstand 133 pounds of pressure with its lid closed and survive a basic two-foot drop. The Acer CB3-131Chromebook will be making its way to a handful of global markets starting in February for $179.99

Thanks to Vive, HTC will have its biggest presence ever at CES

HTC and more than a dozen of its Vive partners are getting ready to show off their VR experiences at CES. While VR demos at the show have traditionally been powered by Oculus Rift, the HTC Vive will be making a name for itself this year. The HTC Vive truck tour will be open to the public with 8 demo bays in the parking lot in front of the Las Vegas Convention Center and those attending the show will be given nearly two dozen different opportunities to test out the HTC Vive.

While the HTC Vive can track users while they move around freely, Virtuix Omni (the omni-directional motion platform) and VirZOOM (a pedal-powered VR controller) will be showing off their integration with HTC Vive. Other show floor demos using the HTC Vive include the Dell-funded “The Lonely Whale“, Dassault Systemes 3D Dream Sketcher virtual CAD program, Audi’s virtual show room and Fox’s VR experience of the “The Martian.” But that’s just the beginning. Intel, AMD, CyberPowerPC, Envelop VR, EVGA, HP, HyperX, iBuyPowerPC, MSI, Nidec, Nvidia, and Zotac are also planning HTC Vive demos of their own.

If the next generation of the HTC Vive developer unit is a groundbreaking at HTC claims it will be, we wouldn’t be surprised if HTC walks away with a half dozen “Best of CES” awards by the end of the week.

Android Auto finally coming to 2016, 2017 Fords

If you already own or are planning to buy a new Ford, you’ll soon be able to fire up Android Auto using Ford’s Sync 3 infotainment system. Ford has announced that Ford Sync 3 on its 2017 models will come with Android Auto and Apple’s CarPlay pre-installed. The 2017 Ford Escape will be the first vehicle from Ford to show up on its show floors with Android Auto this spring. Ford’s 2016 models which are already on the road and have  Sync 3 will receive the Android Auto update “later in the year.”

For those who are not familiar with Android Auto, the platform allows you to interact with specific Android apps on your Android phone through the car’s touch screen. There are a few after-market Android Auto systems on the market, but Google focus has been to work with auto manufacturers to have Android Auto as an additional layer on top of their standard in-car entertainment and navigational system. The Android Auto platform has received a few minor updates since it was introduced nearly 18 months ago, but Google is expected to release significant functionality enhancements later in 2016.

Check out the video below to get a glimpse of what Android Auto can do.

What we’re looking forward to in 2016

Have you checked the calendar lately? 2016 is already here! We saw a lot of great Android-powered devices in 2015, but we have a feeling that things will only get better this year. While we don’t know exactly what 2016 has in store for us, we thought we’d all share what we’re looking forward to the most.

As always, we’d love to hear from you as well. What are you hoping to see on the Android front in 2016?

Nick Gray

Since most of you know that I’m an HTC fan, it shouldn’t be a surprise to hear that I’m really looking forward to HTC’s 2016 flagship smartphone. The HTC One M9 was a decent phone, but it simply fell short when compared to the Samsung Galaxy S6 and LG G4. I’m hoping that HTC will wipe the slate clean and deliver a flagship device which can truly stand out from the competition (in a good way) and become one of the “must-have” gadgets of the year.

I’m also hoping that Google finally gets its act together on the tablet front. Yes, Android on tablets has been improving slowly over the past few years, but Google needs to make it a true priority. Multi-windows support will be a huge step forward, but they’ll need more than that if they want people to think of Android as a productivity platform.

Dustin Earley

I am hoping 2016 is the year “wearables” means more than smartwatches and fitness trackers. There have certainly been some interesting products released in the past year that expand wearables beyond the wrist, but we haven’t really see anything catch on yet. With so many technologies solidified at this point (even the lowest-end components are incredible these days), 2016 looks like a promising year in tech exploration.

On a related note, 2015 was the year I really dove into Google Cardboard. Oculus Rift, with its expensive, proprietary hardware is not the future of virtual reality. Google Cardboard, dirt cheap and highly accessible, is the future. I can’t wait to see what else can come out of Google Cardboard in 2016.

Sean Riley

sean-squareMy main hopes for 2016 are that we see the existing products brought at least closer to their full potential. Wearables and tablets have been a primary focus for me in 2015 and I have been frequently disappointed by their limitations.

In the case of wearables, after Apple Watch was announced and launched there were some questions as to whether they had carved out a better vision for the smartwatch with a greater focus on apps and carrying out tasks on your wrist. Reality has shown that Apple was wrong and as with Android Wear the primary use case for the smartwatch is notification triage. The one feature that Apple nailed was the mobile payment integration and Android Wear needs to catch up with Android Pay support as soon as possible. GPS support was something I was waiting for as a runner and the Moto 360 Sport is proving equal to the task as a run tracking device, now we just need better support for audio content syncing to the smartwatch and more reliable bluetooth connectivity.

I would also echo Dustin that seeing some different wearable concepts would be welcome. One of my favorite and most used gadgets this year was the new Moto Hint. With the case it now offers a full day of battery life and the audio was massively upgraded from the first version. If they released a new version this year that could support stereo with a second earbud that would be an instant buy for me.

I’ll be brief with tablets as I actually think they are really close and regardless of whether it started life as an Android device or not the Pixel C is excellent Android tablet hardware. As Nick noted, multi-window support would be huge and Samsung has been doing it for years and doing it well. Another piece of the puzzle for Android tablets is already here, but not rolled out for most and that is Doze mode. The ability to come back to your tablet after a day of down time and not be greeted by a dead screen is transformative. And finally to be a bit greedy, I would really like to see better pen/stylus support, but I’m aware this is likely a pretty niche desire.

Brooks Barnard

I expect/predict to see flexible and/or bendable (on purpose) devices next year or very soon. There have been a lot of roadblocks with regards to this kind of technology, but I think OEMs are on the verge of bringing this to the masses. I’m not saying these devices will be awesome right off the bat, but I think in the near future we won’t have to worry about shattered displays from device drops and phones being too big. We’ll fold them them up and they’ll fit whereever we want them to, dang it.

Nick Sarafolean

Looking ahead, I hope to see devices with far better battery life. 2015 brought improvements in charging and in some aspects of batteries, but we have yet to see significant change in how long smartphone batteries last. In this new year, we’ll hopefully see manufacturers finding ways to make their device’s batteries last longer, rather than simply finding ways to charge the batteries faster.

I’m also looking forward to what HTC has in store. Much like Nick Gray, I felt that while the One M9 was a good phone, it lacked the remarkability that past HTC phones have carried. With HTC under the gun with financial pressures, I’m hoping that the company will take risks and create a truly stunning device that’s both unique and functional.
