Is it too late for somebody to start with Minecraft in 2017?

So I've never played Minecraft apart from the demo years back. Is it too late to start playing the game now or is it still relevant?

Not trolling because I want to get this game for me and my 4 year old. Also been inspired recently by some older youtube videos where they build huge structures.

What I'm worried about is that I might be too late into this and newer content, or at least what I see as newer content such as mods, can only be enjoyed of you played the game for years already.
