TIL squid don’t spawn on superflat worlds
I was just about to post a request for help when I finally figured it out for myself. See I have this patchwork world I made. A 3×3 grid of 256×256 areas each generated in a different version (1.1 through 1.9) with a different seed. And then I stuck void around it by changing the worldgenerator to flat and the settings to 1 layer of air and nothing else. Finally after a week of playing I got to wondering why no water ever had squids in it. It wasn't the biome (squids don't do a biome check except on Pocket Edition) and it wasn't the height (underwater between Y48 and Y63). It was actually the fact that the worldgenerator tag was set to flat that was suppressing squid spawns. Neither the wiki's squid page nor it's flatlands page mentioned this, so I figure I might as well say something in case anyone else has had the problem. (and yes, I edited the info into those wiki pages after posting this)
