The Pepe market is in a state of upheaval this week after the Anti-Defamation League added the 10-year-old cartoon frog known as Pepe to its Hate Symbols database on Wednesday, September 28th, prompting one online marketplace, Zazzle, to stop selling all their Pepes. The database decision comes weeks after the Hillary Clinton campaign blogged about the use of Pepe among the alt-right, Neo-Nazis, and Trump. Zazzle’s decision to remove all Pepe-related merchandise has been met with contempt among affected artists who began talk of a meme war. The (unofficial, unlicensed) frog Pepes on other indie online marketplaces like Etsy, Society6 and RedBubble are still for sale, for now, but for how long?
