La Australopithecus más famosa, Lucy, que vivió en África hace 3.18 millones de años, murió "probablemente" al caer de un árbol, anunciaron el lunes científicos que han estudiado el fósil.
"Nuestra hipótesis es que Lucy extendió el brazo para tratar de amortiguar la caída", declaró a la AFP el antropólogo John Kappelman, de la Universidad de Texas en Austin, Estados Unidos, tras analizar de cerca distintas fracturas en el fósil.
Lucy, que era al mismo tiempo bípeda y arborícola y medía alrededor de 1.10 metros, había caído de una altura de más de 12 metros, a una velocidad de más de 56 km/h, consideró Kappelman, cuyo estudio ha sido publicado este lunes en la revista Nature. "La muerte se produjo muy rápido", asegura.
Descubierta en 1974 por investigadores estadounidenses y franceses en la región de Afar, en Etiopía, Lucy, que pertenece a la especie Australopithecus afarensis, es un fósil asombrosamente completo: se encontró en torno al 40% de su esqueleto.

Presentada durante largo tiempo como la "abuela de la Humanidad", ya no es considerada como la ancestra directa del hombre, sino como una "prima muy lejana".
Sin embargo, la popularidad del fósil A.L.288-1, bautizada como Lucy por sus descubridores porque en el campo en el que estaban sonaba frecuentemente la canción de los Beatles "Lucy in the sky with diamonds", sigue siendo inmensa.
John Kappelman pudo examinar el fósil en detalle, primero en 2008 cuando Lucy se encontraba de gira por varios museos estadounidenses e hizo un parón de 10 días para ser escaneada en alta resolución en su universidad. En enero de este año, viajó a Adis Abeba, la capital etíope de la que viene la Australopithecus.
Estudiando el fósil y los escáners 3D, Kappelmand observó que el húmero izquierdo (uno de los huesos del brazo) estaba roto de una forma inusual para un fósil. "Ese tipo de fractura se produce cuando la mano toca el suelo en el momento de una caída" y esta afecta a los elementos del hombro, creando "una firma única" al nivel del húmero, explicó el investigador.

Lately, there has been a rallying cry from all the biggest tech firms in the US for diversity in tech, yet very little has seemed to change since diversity became a hot-button issue. This year, companies bared all, and it became abundantly clear that these homogenized work environments were dire: the sample average of African-Americans working in the world’s biggest tech companies came to about seven percent, and Hispanics just eight percent. Women made up less than a third of these positions — and in top executive positions, these numbers decline drastically.
