[Idea] – How Beacons could be Improved

Hey guys, so I recently had an idea on how beacons could be expanded further.

I think beacons are a really great tool to reward players for setting up and developing a base, but I think they're currently not being used to their fullest potential!

One of my largest concerns is that the pyramid/payment system is a bit messy. Why are there 4 usable ore-types of varying values, yet zero effect on the outcome of the beacon?

So my idea is that all powers should be split into 4 categories; Iron, Gold, Emerald and Diamond.

Each of these represents a theme, Iron for Offense; Gold for Quality of Life; Emerald for Environment; Diamond for Defense.

Each of these categories has an assortment of different powers, tier 1, tier 2, tier 3, etc…

In order to activate these powers, there needs to be a minimum number of ore-types in your pyramid. For example, if you wanted to activate the tier 3 power in Quality of Life, then there would need to be at least 35 gold blocks in the pyramid. The higher the tier, the more blocks of that type there need to be.

A single beacon can hold multiple powers, it costs 1 nether star to activate a power. So if you wanted to activate all Environment powers, you would need 164 emerald blocks (the total required for a pyramid) and 5 nether stars.

THE POWERS

I tried to tailor these powers to the base building aspect of Minecraft, so instead of giving players things like permanent Fortune, these are things that improve how you interact with your/other players homes. I also wanted to add some basic defense/offense protocols via beacons that are sorely missing in vanilla Minecraft.

1 – OFFENSE (iron) – These powers increase your offensive output, to better help you protect your territory from enemies.

Tier 1: Strength status effect – An increase in strength.

Tier 2: Reduced cooldown – You can swing your weapon more frequently within your base.

Tier 3: Buffed allies – All ally mobs (snow golems, iron golems, dogs and villagers) receive a strength boost (with villagers being able to defend themselves). Additionally, they cannot be killed; Instead, when their health reaches 0, they get knocked out and must be revived.

Tier 4: Sentry – Your beacon will become a passive sentry that targets enemies nearby. It fires a laser (similar to a guardian's attack) until the threat is eliminated.

2 – QUALITY OF LIFE (gold) – These are basic quality of life improvements to make your life a little more luxurious.

Tier 1: Speed – A speed buff

Tier 2: Jump boost – A jump buff

Tier 3: Haste – An increase in mining speed

Tier 4: Extended reach – You can now reach a further 2 blocks within your base, great for building.

3 – ENVIRONMENT (emerald) – Environmental effects that make your land more appealing

Tier 1: Weather Repel – All weather particles (rain/snow) are disabled within the boundary of your beacon. Snow will not accumulate and lightning cannot strike within.

Tier 2: No Fire – Fire will not spread within your territory

Tier 3: Faster plant growth – All plant life will grow quicker in the area, including grass, trees and crops.

Tier 4: Domestic animals – All bred animals will make much less noise, will become more sedentary (will not try to escape or move too much), require less time to breed and grow up faster.

Tier 5: Monster spawn reduction – Monsters now require light level 4 and under instead of the usual 7 and under. This makes your base significantly less dangerous and means you don't need to light up as much.

4 – DEFENSE (diamond) – Defensive measures to defend your base from external threats. A physical shield is placed around your territory

Tier 1: Resistance – Players have extra resistance

Tier 2: Projectile protection – Arrows cannot penetrate the threshold of your territory 50% of the time, while enderpearls can NEVER penetrate (meaning attackers cannot teleport into your base).

Tier 3 – Elytra protection – Players using elytra are unable to enter your territory through the sky.

Tier 4 – No mob griefing – Creepers, enderman and TNT cannot damage the terrain within your boundaries.

Tier 5 – Mining fatigue – Attackers are given mining fatigue and a block placement cooldown while inside your base. It takes longer to break and place blocks.

Overall I think beacons are a cool idea, but deserve some more features other than potion effects. I'd love to know what you think!

If you'd like a visual representation of this idea, I also made This Video to showcase the features.

Facebook vs Adblock Plus: Just By Fighting, Facebook Wins

On Tuesday this week, Facebook made waves by breaking ad blockers, implementing technology to show ads to people who are using ad blocking technology in their desktop browsers. Within two days the open source ad-blocking community had found a way to defeat Facebook’s technology, and re-enabled ad blocking on the social media giant’s website.
