A Sad Story About Building A “Throwaway” Analytical Model (With A Happy Ending)

In my first real world job I was asked to develop an analytical model to measure the impact of closing some physical branches. The brief I was given was to build the model as quickly as possible and make it reasonably accurate so that it could be run once or twice before it was discarded.

New York Chooses A Clean Energy Standard As The Best Way To Lower Carbon

It’s about time we instituted a true Clean Energy Standard that promotes all low-carbon energy rather than continuing with a Renewable Energy Standard. If you care about climate change, and don’t just have an ideological stand on a particular technology, then you know that we need all low-carbon sources as fast as possible to have any hope of reigning in the most adverse environmental effects of burning fossil fuels. New York’s Governor seems committed to do just that, directing the Department of Public Service to develop a Clean Energy Standard to meet the State’s policy goals of generating 50% of electricity from renewable resources by 2030, while maintaining existing nuclear power plants so that their carbon savings are maintained.

Jeff Bezos desbanca a Warren Buffett del podio de los más ricos del mundo

El fundador de Amazon tenía una fortuna de 65,100 millones de dólares (mdd) al jueves, según el Bloomberg's Billionaire Index, lo que lo coloca ligeramente por delante de los 65,000 mdd de Buffett. Bezos avanzó al tercer lugar en el índice mundial, detrás de Bill Gates y de Amancio Ortega, el propietario mayoritario de la compañía matriz de Zara, Inditex.

Bezos entró en reversa a su nuevo lugar en la lista, después de que su fortuna cayera 136 mdd en gran parte debido a una caída del 0.2% en las acciones de Amazon el jueves. Sin embargo, la fortuna de Buffett cayó 754 mdd, de acuerdo con el índice, debido a una baja de 1.2% en las acciones de Berkshire Hathaway.

Forbes todavía tiene a Bezos ligeramente por detrás de Buffett en su clasificación de multimillonarios en tiempo real, con 64,400 mdd frente a 64,800 mdd.

As Officials Prepare To End MH370 Search, Citizen Investigators Press On

Early on in the search for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, DigitalGlobe Inc., a Colorado-based satellite company, put out a call for the world to help look for the plane by scanning satellite images of the Gulf of Thailand and the South China Sea. The effort didn’t pay off but DigitalGlobe’s tapping into the brain power of the masses was just the beginning of the most high-profile crowd-sourced investigation yet.
